Be it known that I, JASON WV. BOARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Buff-alo, in the county of Putnam and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crossties, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction of cross tie for railway track rails of the type wherein a metal frame is employed as a support for blocks of wood or similar material constituting the seats for the rails, to the end that the requisite strength and resilience of the tie may be secured with the minimum use of wood; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie embodying the invention.

The tie consists essentially of a channeled base 10 having a central shallow portion of transversely arcuate shape and terminal seat portions of rectangular shape for bearing or seat blocks 11 of wood or similar material which are held against longitudinal outward displacementvby stops 12 cast upon or rigidly attached to the floor of the base at its extremities. The central shallow portion is elevated above the plane of the bottom of the block seats, the bottoms of which are curved upwardly and blend into the bottom of the shallow portion at a sharp angle, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. Clamps 13 are engaged with the base and embrace the blocks 11 preferably inside and outside of the plane of each rail 14 for locking the blocks in their proper positions on the base.

The block seats are preferably roughened or serrated as indicated to frictionally resist longitudinal movement ofthe blocks with relation to the base, and the side walls of the base are offset at intervals to form keepers 15 for the reception of the legs of the clamps which are thereby anchored to the base, each clamp consisting of separate members 13a of angular form having their Serial No. 560,403.

shanks provided at their lower ends with enlarged heads 16 forming shoulders to engage the lower edges of the keepers, and having at their upper ends inwardly directed arms 13b overlying the upper side of the block and provided at their extremities with upturned perforated ears 13c which are engaged by the clamp bolts 17. The clamp bolts are preferably equipped with spring washers 18 to cushion vibration and minimize strain upon the parts to reduce the likelihood of fracture under service conditions. The bottom or Hoor of the base is provided with suitable openings 19 to permit of' the engagement of the headed or enlarged lower ends of the clamp shanks therewith, the members of each clamp being engaged with the base before the block is slid into place, so that when the parts are assembled the block serves as a means of preventing disengagement of the clamp members from the base while the clamps serve to lock the blocks in their proper positions on the base. The rails are secured to the bloc-ks by the ordinary spikes 20 or any preferred equivalent thereof.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A tie having a channeled base. blocks seated in the channel at the extremities of the base to form a bearing for the track rails, and clamps engaging the base and engaged with the blocks for securing them in their proper positions with relation to the base, each clamp having separate members interlocked at their lower ends with the base and arranged at their upper ends in overlapping relation with the block, and a bolt engaging the upper ends of said members.

2. A tie having a channeled base, blocks seated in the channel at the extremities of the base to form a bearing for the track rails, and clamps engaging the base and engaged with the blocks for securing them in their proper positions with relation to the base, the side walls of the base being offset to form keepers, and the clamps consisting of separable side members having headed lower ends for interlocking engagement with said keepers and having their upper ends connected by adjusting bolts.
