For the purpose of holding the safety plate in proper relationship a bolt 18 is provided, which bolt is formed of suflicient length to pass through the safety plate and the rail support base and extend a short dis- 1 bolt 18 down wa rd. thereby at all times holding the safety plate 15in proper contact with the balls ll. It will be understood that by the movement of trains upon the rails more or less vibration takes place and by reason of said vibration, the balls l l will be jarred downward, thereby automatically and under all circun'istances producing a clamping action upon the opposing splice plates or fish bars referred to as opposing flanges.
F or the purpose of preventing the usual clicking of the wheels of locomotives and cars as they pass over the joints the bridge portion 7 is so formed that it will receive the tread flange of the wheels and in order to prevent any jarring said bridge portion should be very slightly beveled or curved upon its top or upper face so that said bridge portion will carry the wheels over the joint, the tread portions of the wheel riding upon the bridge portion and will come on to and leave said bridge portion without any jar or jolting. For the purpose of producing a close joint as between the edges of the rails 1, the tread or bridge port on is provided with an overhanging lip or flange 21.
For the purpose of providing room for the jaws to come in proper relationship with reference to the flanges the base 9 should be provided with the notches or recesses 22 so that the jaws 6 can be brought into said notches or recesses. Another purpose of providing the notches is to better hold the rail contact flanges against relative end movement with reference to each other.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangements the rails are free to expand and contract there being no bolts through the rails, thereby allowing the slipping action as between the rails and clamps which is common by reason of the usual contraction and expansion.
I have described the means for forcing the flanges and jaws apart as balls which I consider the most practical, but I do not desire to be confined to the exact shape of the means for forcing the flanges and jaws apart.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, aplate adapted for contact with the vertical webs of said rails, a base flange adapted to support the railway ra1ls,
said base flanges provided with lateral extensions, jaws located at the outer ends of the extensions, said jaws provided with grooves, a bridge plate provided'with flanges having grooves and a series of balls located between the flanges and jaws.
2. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, a plate adapted for contact with the vertical webs of said rails, a base flange adapted to support the railway rails, said base flanges provided with lateral eX- tensions, jaws located at the outer ends of the extensions, said jaws provided with grooves, a bridge plate provided with flanges having grooves and a series of balls located between the flanges and jaws, and means for holding the balls against displacement.
' 3. In a railway rail joint, the combination of railway rails, splice plates located upon opposite sides of the railway rails, one of said splice plates constituting a bridge, the bridge plate provided with grooved flanges inclined downward and outward, inclined jaws provided with grooves, balls located in the grooves of the inclined jaws and flanges, said balls adapted to move the flanges and jaws apart.
l. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, connecting plates provided with rail suporting faces, one of said plates provided with grooved jaws and the other with grooved flanges, the edges of said flanges and jaws inclined, balls located between the jaws and flanges.
5. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, connecting plates provided with rail supporting faces, one of said plates provided with grooved jaws and the other with grooved flanges, the edges of said flanges and jaws inclined, balls located between the jaws and flanges, and a guard plate adapted for contact with the balls.
6. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, connecting plates provided with rail supporting faces, one of said plates provided with grooved jaws, and the other with grooved flanges, the edges of said flanges and jaws inclined, balls located between the jaws and flanges, and a guard plate adapted for contact with the balls, and
, means for holding the guard plate in contact with said balls. I v
7. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, rail connecting" plates provided with rail supporting bases, one of said bases provided with jaws and the other with flanges, said flanges inclined toward the jaws, means located'between the jaws and flanges adapted to separate said jaws and flanges.
8. In a railway joint, the combination of railway rails, rail connecting plates provided with rail supporting bases, one of said bases provided with jaws and the other with flanges, said flanges inclined toward the jaws, means located between the jaws and flanges adapted to sag:- :ao said jaws and flanges, and a guard piste adapted to rest upon the means for separating the flanges and jaws;
