Be it known that we, HENRY C. lWmnn MAN and FRANK A. Sensori, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county olf lVayne, State of Michigan? have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inv Cas-lis, and declare the following to be a full. clear7 and exact description of the other beverages, and has for its object a special form of head construction used in A connection with such a cask, as is shown in the application of Messrs. Huettema'n,
Cramer, lViedeman and Schaum Serial N0.
687,906. Some of the features might be used `with casks of dillerent construction with advantageous results. v
Figure 1, is fragmentary end-view of the cash, showing parts broken away for clearer illustration. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary View partly in side-elevation and partly in vertical section. Fig. 3, is a detail of the ca p heore'it is spun 4into the angle between the chime and the head.
A peculiar feature of the Huetteman, Cramer, "il'icileman and Schaum Cask is'the use of compressed cork stares a and a metal lie etare-sliealh b with irl-turned llanges at the sides as shown at The`staves o are packed about a container (Z which islpreferahly glass-enameled. By .forcing the hoops c down upon ilu stave-sheaths these members are constricliai to force the pressed groundcork stares ff closelyr together and also closely ini-canut with the container o. This results in a package which is thoroughly heat insulated. and which is also elastic so as to'he caoahhl oll taiiing blows and shocks Without injury lo the exterior casing or the inner container.
The present invention consists in an improved head construction for such a cash. This head construction comprises a head -.-lfhiiathing f that consists of a single piece of sheet metal filleul. fflgvinch thick, which corers not ony 'the head of the Cask but also folds over the of the aves and stave sheaths as a protecting cover for This sheathing is first pressed into a can if as shown in Fig. 3) by suitable dies. The cap` can be slipped over the end of the eef that theannular flange (j of the cap li the outside of the chime. The cap i forced down into the angle between the side of the ychime and the head. This is complished hy spinning the metal disk the cap hy a suitable spinning tooi. 'liiio cap 4is then welded to the metallic stare sheath structure or may be secured hy other suitable means. In order 'ro protect, the stave ends and also the head sheathing, which is rather thin metal. a reinforinig ring z is employed. This rein forcing ring sets directly 'upon the top of the stares anal stave sheaths and serres to faire the lima-lis and blows which are given the barrel upon its end. The reinforcing ring is marleo? heavy metal, preferably -l inch thick.
It has been found very essential in a enameled cask to prevent the mais i, lne container warping in and out. either gas pressure generated by the contents or hi' s blow from the exterior. for il the enf. allowed to Warp they will crack the 'lo avoid this and yet secure he arb-an.Y of an elastic heat-insulated casi". 'he la the cask is made in two pieces. compri:l disk of ground pressed cori; j which directly upon the Vhead oi the coni a This acts as a cushion aml also i: a hear iti` sulator. Above this` is placed a rigid heini f: which 'gives stiffness lo the heini of lha casi; and prevents the warping of the head ci the container and valso proteels -thc con' from blows or knocks received hy il `We prefer to use wood. hut a com; material that is both rigid and .seinen a heat insulator might be emploi rigid head does not come directly with the metal of the container so as ro jure the container' when ai severe hiow is ceived on "the end of the cash, as 'from iii-opping the same or otherwise. The pressed ground-cork disk cushions the rigid meinber with respect to the metallic container.
