Description
N,PETERS. PHOTD-UTHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
,GEORGE W.- rHOMsON, or BUFFALO, ANew YORK.
I Letters Patent No. 113,365,1iated April 4, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN' comme LAM-Ps.
The @chedule refen'ed to ln these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. THOMSON, of Buiaio, in the county of Erie in the State of New York,
have invented a new and improved Mode of Preventing Coil-oil Lamps from Exploding; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had. to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon;
The invention is an improvement on the'lamp on which a patent was granted to me J nly 26, 1870, and numbered 105,867. i
The nature ofthe 'improvement consists in using shellac for the external coating of the lamp, prepared and applied in the following manner: tirst, dissolve the shellac in alcoholto theconsistenoy of thin varnish; then heat the lamp to such a degree as to vapoiize the alcohol quickly, as the shellac4 solution is applied by a soft varnish-brush. After two or three applications of the shellac-solution in this manner,
keeping the lamp heated during the intervals, it forms a transparent permanent coating that lcoiloil or uid will not remove. Nothing but4 a strong alkali or alcohol will remove it; therefore it makes a cheap and desirable coating 'for the lamp.
It being my Object to make a safe and attractive lamp at a price within the reach of the common people, I desire to protect this manner of coating, which, in its applicationto copper lamps, is original with my" self, while it is-much cheaper than vbronze' or Silverplating What Iv claim as my invention, and desire toV secure by Letters Patent in this improvement, isy The coating of shellac, prepared and applied to copperilamps for -an external coating, as herein deecribed..
' GEORGE W. THOMSON.
