SAFETY HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented litar. 30, 1915..
Application filed. April 30, 1912. Serial No. 694,117.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN KAMP, citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safetyl-lat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety hat pins, and the object of my invention is to provide a hat pin with a compound head, one portion of which may be removed and applied to the point of the pin.
A further object of my invention 1s to provide the removable member of the pin head with a safety attachment adapted for engagement with the hat and operable either when said member is acting as a part of the head or when it is acting as a guard for the point of the pin. And a still further object of my invention is to improve the construction and increase the eificiency of hat pin guards of the above described character.
With these and other objects in view, my invention will bemore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then specifically pointed out in the clalm which is attached to and forms a part of this application.
In the drawings: Figure 1 15 a perspective view of my hat pin; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section, showing the removable head member employed as a guard.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The preferred embodiment of my invention includes a hat pin shank 1O pointed at one end as at 11 and provided at its opposite end with an ornamental head 12 of any preferred design. This head is composed of two members, a fixed member and a detachable member, the fixed member 13 being formed of any desired metal and in any preferred shape and terminating at its free end in the cylindrical socket 1a which is preferably formed of resilient metal and fiared at its outer end, as shown. To further increase the resiliency of this socket, its outer end may be slitted longitudinally as shown at 15. The fixed member 13 is hollow in construction and is preferably filled with any suitable substance, such as cork or rubber, the filling surrounding the extremity of the pin shank 10 and forming a closure at the bottom of the socket 14. As this socket forms the outer or exposed end of the pin head proper, it is preferably fancifully formed to present an attractive appearance, probably the most satisfactory way being to fashion it in the shape of a cup-shaped flower, the slits then forming the sides of the petals. The detachable head member 16 may also be of any preferred form and is provided at its inner end with a cylindrical extension 17 also preferably formed of re silient metal and adapted for engagement in the socket 14 of the fixed head member. This removable head member is hollow in construction-and is filled with any preferred elastic substance or material, such as cork or rubber. In order to prevent accidental disengagement and loss of the removable head member, I have provided its shell with a rim 18 to which is attached a short chain 19 provided at its free end with a small pin 20 of any preferred type and adapted for attachment to the brim or body of the hat when the pin is in use. The shell of the removable head member is also provided with an encircling liange 18 adjacent the free extremity of the reduced extension 17, the said flange forming a stop shoulder arranged to engage the outer terminal of the wall of the socket of the fixed head member to limit the reduced extension in its inward movement within said socket when attaching the removable head member to the fixed head member. 7
In operation, the head members are frictionally held together and the pin is applied in the usual manner. When so applied, the head members may be left as they are if desired, or the removable head member 16 may be separated and applied to the point of the pin, said point being forced into a longitudinally extending bore formed in the filling of the removable head member. In either case, the small pin 20 may be fastened to the hat in such a manner as to prevent its loss and, if in the former case, in such a manner as to prevent the loss of the hat pin itself. In the latter case, of course, the pin is held against disengagement by the binding action between the point of the pin and the elastic filling of the detachable head member.
As will be seen by forming the guard of the pin point as a detachable portion of the pin head proper, I have practically provided two pins in one as the pin, if worn as it ordinarily is, without any guard, may be worn with the detachable head member applied to the fixed head member or with the fixed head alone.
The fixed head of the pin is preferably made relatively, small as shown, in order that the pin may present a neat appearance when both head members are employed as the pin head, and it will be seen that even when the removable head member is to be used as a guard, if first applied to the fixed head member, it will assist materially in the proper application of the pin to the hat.
It will of course be understood that both head members will be formed of the same metal and ornamented and designed in uniformity with each other to present a neat and attractive appearance.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is:
A hat pin including a shank, a fixed head 'm'ember carried terminally thereof, the free extremity of said member terminating in a cylindrical socket the wall of which is pro- 5:;
tongues disposed in spaced relation around 7 the entire circumference of'said. wall, the said tongues being free at their outer ends, and a removable head member adapted for application to the point of the shank and having a resilient extension adapted to seat in the socket of the fixed head member to bear against said resilient gripping tongues, said extension being provided with an encircling fiange forming a shoulder arranged to contact with the adjacent extremity. of the wall of the socket tov limit the inward movement of the extension within the socket. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
