Too whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonsn GAMBLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Port Dover, in the Province of ()n tario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Nipples and other Work, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in nipple or other work holders; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawing illustrating what I now believe to be the preferred mechanical expression of my invention from among other combinations, constructions and arrangements within the spirit and scope of the invention.
It is an object of the invention to provide improved and exceedingly simple, durable and efficient means particularly adapted for holding nipples (for pipe lines or other purposes) during the operation of cutting screw threads in the exterior surface thereof.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and particularly set forth and specified hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is an elevation of a nipple holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3, is a cross section on an enlarged scale, the section being taken in the plane of the line 8--3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail view of one of the nipple gripping blocks or pins.
In the specific example illustrated, the holder comprises an elongated tubular body or stock 1, composed of any suitable metal or other material) of the requisite strength and durability. llhis stock forms two cylindrical portions or exterior concentric cylindrical surfaces, to wit; the surface or cylindrical portion 2, occupying the greater portion of the length of the stool: and having a diameter intended to be the same as the external diameter of the nipples to be held by said holder; and the surface 3, occupying the remainder of the length of the stock and having a diameter slightly less than the internal diameter of the nipplesto be operated on. For certain kinds of nipples, I have found it convenient and satisfactory to form specification of Letters Patent.

the cylindrical portion 3, of a diameter approximately one sixteenth of an inch less than the internal diameter of the nipples to be operated on. An abrupt annular radial or transverse exterior shoulder or edge 4, intervenes between these two cylindrical surfaces. The reduced cylindrical portion 3, is at one end of the holder, and in length is preferably not less than the length of the nipples to be operated on. The portion 3, is adapted to receive, to fit longitudinally into, the nipple to be operated on, with the shoulder 4%, squarely abutting against the adjacent end edge of the nipple.
I provide means to clamp or grip the nipple against rotation on the holder and to center the nipple so that its exterior surface will be concentric with the surface 3, and will be flush with the surface 2. lhe means I show for this purpose, comprises four equally spaced radially arranged pins or blocks 5, confined in radial holes extending through the cylindrical portion 3, approximately midway the length thereof. Each pin is approximately cylindrical or round in end view and is formed with a flat outer end to present a gripping edge 6, against the inner surface of the nipple while the inner end 7, of the pin projecting into the bore of the stock is preferably rounded. 'Ihese pins are normally and yieldingly held withdrawn and at their-limits of inward movement and with their outer ends below the cylindrical outer surface 3, by
suitable springs. For instance, I show four plate springs 8, one for each pin, arranged longitudinally of the surface 3, and depressed below said surface by being located in longitudinal depressions or sockets 9, therein. Each spring is secured at one end by suitable means, such as screw 10, while its opposite and free end projects into a radial hole occupied by a pin 5, and bears down against the outer end of such pin to resist outward radial movement thereof. The free ends of said springs preferably fit in depressed sockets or notches 11, in the outer ends of the pins so that the spring ends will not be forced against the nipple when the pins are projected into gripping engagement with the nipple. In this instance, the pins are projected to nipple gripping position. by a wedge ormandrel 1 2,
in the stock and having a longitudinally threaded inner end screwing into a reduced longltudinally threaded intermediate portion 13, of the bore of the stock. Intermediate its length this mandrel is formed with the longitudinally tapered portion 14, while the projecting or exterior outer end of the mandrel is formed (as by transverse hole 15) to receive a handle or other implement by which the mandrel can be rotated to screw the same into or unscrew the same from the stock to'advance the taper 14, inwardlyto project the pins 5, or to withdraw the taper outwardly to permit the springs to Withdraw the pins.
. The end of the stock opposite the end formed to receive the nipple, is preferably provided with the exteriorscrew thread 16, whereby the stock can be coupled to means for holding the same during the nipple threading operation. The stock can be clamped in a pipe vise, or can be applied to a lathe, or can be screwed into a length of pipe and held by a chain wrench or the like, or can be screwed into the pipe line, to be held during the nipple threading operation. The nipple to be threaded is slipped onto the cylindrical portion 3, and fitted against shoulder 4i, and then the mandrel is rotated in the proper direction to forcibly project the pins 5, into gripping biting engagement with the interior of the nipple. These four pins support the nipple at uniformlv spaced 7 points around the circle thereof and do not tend to spring or bend the nipple from its cylindrical form, but bite into the inner surface thereof and effectively hold the nipple against rotation on the stock. Any suitable screwing cutting tool or die is then employed to out the desired thread on the exterior of the nipple and during this operation, the cylindrical portion 2, serves as a guide and support for such die and keeps the die accurately in line during its cutting operation. When one end of the nipple has been threaded, the mandrel can be moved outwardly to withdraw its taper from the pins and the springs will withdraw the pins from gripping position. The nipple can then be slipped from the stock and again placed thereon in the reversed position and locked thereto by'screwing up the mandrel. The die can then be operated to thread said end of the nipple;
By employing the stock having the cylindrical body or portion '2, a guide and support is provided for the cutting tool or die, and the stock can be readily used as hereinbefore described, or can be supported by various means during the nipple threading operation.
1 The mandrel projects from the end of the stock that receives the nipple and is operative from that end so that the nipple can be locked and released while the stock is held locked or supported by its opposite end, and the nipple can be readily slipped onto and from its seat on the stock by passing the nipple longitudinally over or from the projecting operating end of the mandrel.
It is evident that various changes, variations and modifications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact disclosure hereof.
What I claim is 1.. Means for holding nipples while being threaded consisting essentially of a straight elongated stock at one end formed to be held by a support and having an open end longitudinal socket, and at the other end longitudinally reduced to enter the nipple to be threaded and formed with an annular shoulder to engage the inner end edge of the nipple, the elongated portion of the stock between said shoulder and said first mentioned end being exteriorly formed to guide the screw threading tool while acting on said nipple, nipple gripping devices arranged within said nipple receiving end of the stock, and a longitudinally adjustable mandrel arranged longitudinally within the stock for operating said devices, said stock having an intermediate internally threaded bore receiving said mandrel.
2. A holder for nipples, and the like, consisting of an elongated tubular stock screwthreaded at one end to receive a support and at the opposite end reduced and shouldered to enter the nipple to be threaded and to abut the end edge thereof, the portion of said stock between said shoulder and said threaded end being cylindrical and forming a guide for the screw threading die while acting on said nipple, and means for looking the nipple to and against rotation on said stock, said means being mounted in and carried by said stock and operative from the nipple-receiving end of the stock.
A holder for nipples and the like, consisting of an elongated tubular stock having a nipple receiving end and approximately throughout the remainder of its length of a diameter approximately equal to the external diameter of the nipples to be received by said end, nipple gripping devices arranged within said end, said stock having an intermediate internally threaded longitudinal bore, and a longitudinally adjustable mandrel arranged longitudinally within the stock for operating said devices and projecting from the nipple receiving end of the stock for actuation, said mandrel having a threaded portion longitudinally adjustable in said bore.
4. A holder for nipples and the like, c011- sisting of a longitudinally elongated tubular stock having a nipple receiving end and being exteriorly threaded at its opposite end to enter a support, and intermediate its length having an internal contraction formed with a longitudinal threaded bore, whereby the nipple receiving end of the stock is formed with a longitudinal mandrel receiving socket and the portion of the stock at the opposite end of said contraction is formed with a longitudinal support re ceiving socket, nipple gripping devices arranged in said nipple receiving end of the stock, and a gripping-deviceoperating mandrel arranged in and projecting outwardly from said mandrel receiving socket and at its inner end having a threaded portion longitudinally adjustable in said threaded bore.
5. Means for holding nipples while being threaded consisting essentially of a straight elongated stock at one end formed to receive a stock support and at the other end formed to receive a nipple, the stock, exclusive of said nipple receiving end, being eX teriorly formed to guide the screw threading tool while acting on said nipple, nipple gripping devices arranged within said nipple receiving end of the stock, and a longitudinally adjustable mandrel arranged longitudinally within the stock for operating said devices.
6. Means for holding nipples while being threaded consisting of a hollow stock exteriorly formed to receive a nipple and having an internal longitudinal threaded bore and having radial holes, radially movable pins in said holes having flat outer nipple gripping ends and rounded inner mandrel engaging ends, springs secured in the stock and engaging said outer ends of the pins, and a rotary and longitudinally movable tapered mandrel engaging said rounded ends of the pins and having a threaded portion adjustable in said bore.
