Be it known thatl, ELLISIW. Qoornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, county of Essex, and $tate of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding and Delivery Mechanism, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part their passage from the folding mechanism through the delivery.
One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- I I,

Referring now to these drawings, while the invention may be used in other relations, the machine selected to illustrate it shows the invention in conjunction with the delivery end of a printing machine employing a delivery cylinder, which cylinder isindicated by the numeral 1, and which is driven in any suitable manner.

In accordance with the invention, there is provided a folding mechanism so located with reference to the delivery cylinder that sheets folded by the folding mechanism are positively controlled during their passage through the folder to'the cylinder. While the folding mechanism employed may be somewhat varied, in the particular construction illustrated there is a pair of folding rollers 2, 3, located below the delivery cylinder 1 and closely adjacent thereto, so that the head of the folded sheet may be taken by the delivery cylinder before the tail of the sheet is released by the folding rolls. These folding rolls are mounted in any suitable manner, one of them, as 3', being mounted in adjustable journals so that by adjusting the journals the width of the opening between the rolls may be varied. Preferably, moreover, these adjustable journals of the roll 3 are spring pressed for holding the folding rolls in close folding cohtact, this constructionbeing usually employed for this purpose.
The sheet S is delivered from the print ing mechanism, when the invention is employed in connection with a printing machine, to the folding rolls by means of the usual tapes 4 and is stopped in proper re-' lation with the folding rolls by sheet stops 5. Cooperating with they folding rolls in the particular construction illustrated is a t'uckerbl'ade 6 which is operated to tuck the sheet between the rolls in any suitable manner, the tucker blade, as shown, being car-' ried on an arm 7 mounted ona rock shaft 8 suitably journaled in the frame of the ma chine. This rock shaft is rocked to operate the tucker blade through a rock arm 9 on i the shaft 8, having at its free jendia stud 10 to which is secured a crank arm 11, this crank arm, at its other end,-be1ng carried on an eccentric stud 12 fast on the delivery erated.
The delivery cylinder, when the delivery device'is'a cylinder, isprovided with sheet taking devices which, in the-particular construction illustrated, are or may be gripper I fingers 13. These grippers may be cvlinder l, by which the crank arm is opmounted on the cylinder in any suitable v manner. As illustrated, they are'secu'red to a block 14 which is secured to a rock shaft 15 journaled in the cylinder 1. These grippers are operated to open and close to grip a sheet in any suitable manner. As shown, the rock shaft 15, before referred to, has secured thereto a cam lever 16. This lever at one end has secured thereto a cam roll 17 which runs-on a cam 18 suitably fastened I to the frame ofthe machine. The grippers are operated to move to open or sheet taking position by the cam, and are closed when the cam roll runs off the high point of the cam by means of a spring rod construction 19 on the other end of the lever 14, before referred to.

To enable the head of the folded sheetto be taken by the sheet taking devices on the cylinder before the tail of the sheet is released by the folding rolls, these rolls are as before stated located closely adjacent thede livery cylinder, this construction also having the advantage of being very compact and,
taking up little space. In the best constructions, these rolls are located so closely ad acent to the delivery cylinder that the sheet taking devices thereon operate to take the sheet directly from the rolls just after it has been given its fold by the rolls. When this construction is employed, means may be provided for permitting the grippers to so take the sheet Without interference from the rolls. While this construction may be somewhat .varied, in the particular construction illustrated this is eflected by providingone of the folding rolls, as 2, with clearances 20,
under the head of the folded sheet and seize the same.
In the best constructions employing folding, rolls, sheet. guides 21 are provided to the grippers after it has been given its fold. From the delivery cylinder the sheets are or may be delivered to any convenient place, as, for instance, an ordinary delivery table 25. Strippers 26 may be provided for stripping the sheets from the cylinder.
While the invention has been shown and described as used in conjunction with a printing machine, it will be understood that it may be used in other relations. It is further understood that it is not to be restricted to the precise arrangement and details of construction shown and described, but that changes and variations may be made in the same without departing therefrom.
,What is claimed is p 1. In a folding mechanism, the combination with a pair of folding rolls, of a delivery cylinder to which the folding rolls de-' liver the folded product direct, said cylinder being provided with sheet taking devices and so arranged with relation to the folding rolls that the head of the folded sheet is taken by the sheet taking devices before the tail of the sheet has been released by the folding means.
2. In a folding mechanism, the combination with a delivery cylinder provided with sheet taking devices, of a pair of folding rolls located closely adjacent said delivery cylinder, one of said folding rolls being provided with recesses in which the sheet taking devices of the cylinder may enter to seize the head of the sheet while the tail of the sheet is held by the rolls.
. 3. In a folding mechanism, the combination with sheet forwarding means, of a delivery cylinder having sheet taking grippers, of a pair of folding rolls locatedclosely adjacent to the cylinder, one of said. rolls being provided with recesses in which. the grippers may enter to seize the head of a folded sheet, and a guide for directing the head of the sheet to the sheet taking devices.
4. In a folding mechanism, the combination with a delivery mechanism provided with sheet-taking devices, of a pair of folding rolls located closely adjacent said delivery mechanism, one of said folding rolls being provided with clearances to permit the sheet-taking devices of the delivery mechanism to enter and seize the head of the sheet witnesses.
