Be it known that I, HERMANN BOERNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Honing Razors, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a honing device for razors wheren by the razor, after being inserted in a holder, is carried lengthwise of the hone, and at the same time is moved transversely across the hone.
Another object is to provide improved means for holding the razor blade firmly on the hone.
A further object is to provide improved means for locking the razor in the holder.
A still further object is to provide improved means in a device of this character so that it is applicable to any size of razor.
Other and further objects will appear in the speciiication, and be specifically brought out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings eX- emplifying the invention, and in which,

Referring to the drawings: 1 designates a platform mounted on the feet 2. Mounted on said platform is a frame 8 having a base portion 4 and upright end supports 5. Mounted longitudinally of the frame 8, and in the end supports 5, and adjacent the rear thereof, are a pair of parallel guide bars 6 which are securely held in said end supports by the set screws 7. Mounted in the end supports 5, adjacent the front of the frame 8, are a pair of parallel guide bars 8 which are arranged at an angle to the guide bars G, and are secured in the supports 5 by set screws 9.

Reciprocably mounted on the guide bars 6 is a block 10 on which is pivotally mounted a blade pressure arm 11. Reciprocably mounted on the guide bars 8 is a block 12 on which is mounted the razor holder 18. Secured at one end to the under side of the block 12 is a plate 14C, said plate extending transversely across the frame 8 and having its opposite end slidably mounted in the block 10.
Pivotally mounted to the base 4 of the frame 8, adjacent the rear thereof, and at 15, is a hand lever 16 having the handle 17. Formed in said lever 16 is a slot 18, said slot being for the reception of a pin 19 which is secured to the block 12 and depends therefrom.
Forming part of the razor holder 18 is a cylindrical member 20 which is oscillatably mounted in the casing 21. Formed in said member 20 is a recess 22, said recess extending from the periphery of said member to the center thereof. Formed on one of the side walls of said member 20, and at the bottom of the recess 22, is a segment 28, said segment being in mesh with the gear 24C, which is mounted on the stub shaft 25, said shaft being supported at one end in the bracket 26, lwhich is secured to the block 12. I-Iorizontally and slidably mounted in the block 12 is a rack 27, said rack being in mesh with the gear 24.
Swingingly mounted at 28 to one of the supports 5, adjacent the top thereof, is a stop member 29, said stop adapted to be engaged by the block 12. Formed on one side vof the cylindrical member 2O is a pair of recesses 80, each of said recesses being formed on each side of the recess 22 and adjacent the outer end thereof.
Removably mounted in the recess 22 is a locking bar 81, one end of said locking bar having pintles 82 formed thereon. The opposite end of said bar carries a spring-actuated button 88, said button having lugs 84C formed thereon. Said lugs are adapted to engage a recess 85 after the pintles 82 of said locking bar 81 have engaged in the recesses 80. Mounted on one side of the loclring bar 81 is the coil spring 86.
The blade pressing arm 11, which is pivotally mounted at 87 to the block 10, is re cessed at one end forming a pair of legs 88. The opposite end of said arm carries the spring actuated plunger 89. one end of the said plunger is a roller L10,
Mounted at said roller being adapted to engage a centrally arranged trackway 41, which is mounted longitudinally of the base 3. The ends of said track 41 terminate at an equal distance from the end supports 5. Said distance between each end of said track and said end supports is adapted to be intermittently closed by swinging tracks 42, each of said tracks being pivotally mounted at 43 to each endsupport 5.
SecuredV to each swinging track 42, at one end, is a tractile coil spring 44, the opposite end of each'spring being secured to each endV support 5. Located on the inside of each end Vsupport 5, and adjacent each pivot 43 ofthe tracks`42, 'is a pair of supports 45.
Each of saidvpair of supports has mounted thereon a reciprocatory/ bar 46. Reciprocably mounted in the end supports 5, and extending parallelly of the guide bars 6 is a sliding bar 47. Securely mounted on said bar 47 adjacent each end, and on the inside of the end supports 5, is a collar 48 having a tapered portionr49.
Mounted longitudinally of the frame 3, andv between the blocks 10 and 12, is a cradley 50, the ends of said cradle being pivotally mounted on pins 51 to the end supports 5. Said Vcradle is for thevreception of ,a razor hone 52. To provide a resilient base for said hone, aresilient member 53 is placed in said cradle beneath said hone.
Mounted on the base 4, adjacent the front thereof, is a circular trackway 54, which is .formed on a radius from the pivot 15 of the lever 16. Secured to the under side of said lever 16 is a leg 55 carrying a roller 56. Said leg and roller are adapted to support said vlever above said trackway.
In theoperation of this improved device, the razor, after being put in the holder, is ihoned by manipulating the vlever 16 from one side to the other. The block 12 at the endof each stroke abuts against one of the endsupports 5. During the travel of the razor blade on the face of the hone, the blade, of course, will lie flatly thereon. l/Vhenthe razor holder is nearing the end of its travel on each stroke it is necessary to reverse the side of the blade that has been engaging the hone so the blade can engage the hone on its opposite side on the succeeding stroke. As shown in Fig. 1, the lever 16 has just completed its stroke to the left, and the side of the razor blade has been reversed and is now ready for its travel to the right of the hone. In the next operation, which will be zby manipulating thelever 16 to the right, as the block 12 nears the right hand .support 5, the protruding end of the rack 27 will engage said support 5, said rack being forced into the block 12. During this movement,'the gear 24 and segment 23 are moved so that half of a complete turn will be given to the razor blade.
In order to insert or remove a blade in or from the holder 13, the blocks 10 and 12 .which formthe carriage for the razor must be stopped at a distance from one end oi the left-hand support 5, as shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive. In the position shown, the razor is on the point oi' being reversed, or in other words, the edge of the razor would be up and the back thereof down. In order to insure an exact stopping position of the carriage so a razor can be removed or inserted into the holder, the stop 29 is thrown into a position as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. Un the left-hand stroke, the block 12 of the carriage abuts against said stop. The locking bar 31 is then in a position of alinement with the opening 57 formed in the top of the casing 21. The spring actuated button 33 is then engaged and pulled outwardly until the lugs 34 disengage the recesses 35, said the razor is inserted into the recess 22, the
back thereotl being downward. The pintles 32 of the locking bar 31 are engaged in the recesses 30. Then said locking bar is pressed downwardly until the lugs 34 engage the recesses 35. The spring 36 carried on the under side of said locking bar will bear against the razor shank, thus holding the razor securely in the holder. After the razor has been inserted in the holder, the stop 29 is thrown back out of the path of travel of the carriage, and the movement of the carriage is continued to the left until the block 12 abuts the left support 5, which abutting of the block will force the rack 27 into said block so the opposite end of said rack will engage the right end support 5 on its righthand travel, when said rack will be again moved into the block its proper distance to insure a complete half turn to the razor when reversing.
In order to provide means for holding the blade of the razor firmly on the hone during its stroke thereupon, one of the legs 3S of the blade-pressing arm 11 is caused to bear upon said razor blade by the roller 40 of the spring-actuated plunger 39 which is carried by said arm traveling upon the central track 41 As shown best in Fig. 1, one of the swinging tracks 42 is swung away from the track 41. As the carriage is brought to the right, the roller 40 of the blade pressing arm 11 will leave the track 41. By reason of said arm having a spring-actuated movement on the pivot 37 caused by the spring 5S, said roller 40 will swing into space, thus lifting the pressing end of the arm 11 from the razor blade. At this point, the rack bar 27 is being actuated, and the razor blade is being turned. As the movement of the carriage is continued to the right, one of the pins 59 carried on the under side of the block l0 will engage the right hand collar 48 which is mounted on the reciprocating bar 47, thus moving said collar and bar.
The taper portion 49 will engage one end of the right hand bar 46, thus moving said bar 46 outwardly so the outer end 60 of said bar 46 will bear against the right hand swinging track 42 and move said track in approximate alinement with the track 4l. This movement of said swinging track 42 will bear against the roller 40 and return the blade-pressing arm 11 to its position on the razor blade. As said bar 47 is moved by engagement with one oi the pins 59 against the right-hand collar 48, the left-hand collar 48 is disengaged from the left-hand bar 46, and the left-hand spring 44 swings the left-hand track 42 open and at the same time moves said left-hand bar 46 inwardly.
It is to be noted that the track 4l has end inclined portions 61 so the roller 40 of the blade-pressing arm 11, when mounting said track 41, will causev resilient pressure to be brought on said arm by reason of the resilient plunger 39 located in the lower end of said arm. It is obvious that the swinging of the tracks 42 alternately, causing the swinging of the arm l1, will be carried on at the end of each stroke.
Attention is called to the guide bars 8 which are arranged at an angle to the guide bars 6, which will cause the block l2 to move toward and away from the block 10, which will provide for the transverse motion of a blade across the hone, as said blade is being moved longitudinally of the hone. The resilient member 53, which is placed under the hone 52 in the cradle 50, provides for the equalization of resilient pressure with the pressure caused from the pressing arm l1. Because of the spring 36 carried by the locking bar 8l, and because of the resiliency applied to said arm 11 and hone 52, razors of different sizes are readily honed by this improved device without any manual adjusting of parts.
What I claim is:
l. In a razor honing device, a reciprocatory carriage comprising a pair of slidably mounted blocks, a razor holder carried by one of said blocks, a blade pressing arm carried by the other said block, one of said blocks adapted to travel toward and away :from said other block during the reciprocatory movement of said carriage, and means for turning said holder and elevating said pressing arm as said carriage nears the end of each stroke.
2. In a razor honing device, a carriage comprising a pair of reciprocably mounted blocks, guide bars for said blocks, a hone carrier located between said blocks, one of said blocks adapted to support a razor holder, a pressure arm carried by the other said block, a lever for reciprocating said carriage on said bars, means whereby one of said blocks is moved toward and away from the other said block during the reciprocatory movement of said carriage, means for elevating one end of said pressure arm, and means carried by said carriage for turning said holder while said pressure arm is elevated as said carriage nears the end of its stroke.
3. In a razor honing device, a carriage comprising a pair of reciprocably mounted blocks, a plate rigidly secured to one of said blocks, said plate being slidably mounted in the other said block, guide bars for said blocks, a hone carrier located between said blocks, one of said blocks adapted to support a razor holder, a pressure arm carried by the other said block, a lever for reciprocating said carriage on said bars, means whereby one of said blocks is moved toward and away from the other said block on said plate during the reciprocatory movement of said carriage, means for elevating one end of said pressure arm, and means carried by said carriage for turning said holder while said pressure arm is elevated as said carriage nears the end of its stroke.
4. In a razor honing device, a reciprocatory carriage comprising' a pair of blocks, a razor holder carried by one of said blocks, guide bars for said blocks, supports for said guide bars, a rack and pinion carried by one of said blocks, and a segment mounted on said holder in mesh with said pinion, one of said blocks adapted to move toward and away :from the other said block during the reciprocation of said carriage, said rack and pinion being actuated when said rack engages each of said supports, said rack and pinion when actuated adapted to turn said razor holder.
5. In a razor honing device, a carriage comprising a pair of slidably mounted blocks, a revolubly mounted razor holder carried by one of said blocks, a blade pressing arm carried by the other said block, a hone carrier located between the vpath of travel of said blocks, one of said blocks adapted to travel toward and away from said hone carrier during the reciprocation of said carriage, said pressure arm adapted to be elevated while said holder is being turned.
6. In a razor honing device, a carriage comprising a pair of slidably mounted blocks, each of said blocks being reciprocably mounted on a pair of parallelly arranged guide bars, one pair of said bars being arranged at an angle to the other said pair of bars, a plate having one end secured to one of said blocks, the opposite end of said plate being slidably mounted on the other said .riage adapted to engage said track, means for moving one of said track sections out of alinement from said other track sections, said movable track sections providing means for elevating one end of said pressure arm.
8. 1n a razor honing device, a reciprocably mounted carriage, a pivotally mounted blade pressing arm secured to said carriage, a revolubly mounted blade'holder mounted on said carriage, a sectional track extending parallel with the travel Vof said carriage, means for reciprocating said carriage, said pressure arm adapted to engage said track,
means for moving one of said track sections out of alinement with said other sections, said movable track section providing means for elevating one end of said pressure arm when said blade holder is being revolved.

10. ln a razor honing device, a reciprocatory carriage, a razor holder, and a blade pressure arm carried by said carriage, a central track, a movable track located adjacent each end of said central track, said movable tracks adapted toV be moved alternately into approximate alinement lwith said central track, each of said movable tracks when out of alinement with said central track causing said pressure arm to be elevated while said pressure' arm is moved thereadjacent, and means fer actuating said razor holder while said pressure arm is elevated.
11. lnfa razor honing device, a reciprocable carriage comprising a pair of slidably mounted blocks, a razor holder carried by one of said blocks, a blade pressure arm carried by the other said block, a central track, a movable track located adjacent each end of said centra track, said movable tracks adapted tebe moved alternately into approximate alinement with said central track, each ofisaid movable tracks when out of'alin'ement with said central track causing said pressure arm to be elevated when said pressure arm is moved thereadjacent, and means for actuating said razor holder while said pressure arm is elevated, one of said blocks adapted to travel toward the other said block during the reciprocation of said carriage.
.12. 1n a razor honing device, a carriage comprising a pair of slidably mounted blocks, a razor holder carried by one of said blocks, a blade pressure arm carried by the other said block, a central track, a movable track located adjacent each end of said central track, said movable tracks adjacent each end of saidvcentral track adapted to be moved alternately into approximate ali nement with said central track, each of said movable tracks when out of alinement with said central track causing said pressure arm to be elevated when said pressure arm is moved thereadjacent, and a rack and pinion carried by said holder, for actuating said razor holder while said pressure arm is elevated, one of said blocks adapted to travel toward the other said block during the reciprocation of said carriage.
13. In a device for sharpening edged tools, ai carriage, saidcarriage adapted to hold a tool to be sharpened, said carriage comprising a pair of reciprocably mounted blocks, a hone carrier located between said blocks, a plate rigidly secured at one end to one of said blocks, said plate having its opposite end slidingly secured to the other said block, a blade pressure arm pivotally mounted to one of said blocks, and a tool holder carried bysaid other block, said pressure arm adapted to swing upwardly when said carriage is adjacent the end of its stroke.

19. ln a razor honing device, a reciprocably mounted carriage, a razor blade holder carried by said carriage, said holder comprising a casing and a cylindrical member rotatably mounted in said casing, a recess formed in said member, guide rods for said carriage, supports for the ends of said guide rods, said recess oit' said member adapted to aline with an opening formed in said casing` said recess being `for the reception of a razor blade shank, a locking bar for engagement with said recess, means for rotating said member when said carriage is adjacent the end of its stroke, and a removable member adapted to be located between said carriage and one of said guide rod supports for stopping the rotation of said cylindrical member when the recess of said cylindricalmember is in a position of alinement with said opening of said casing.
