DUMPING-CAR.
Application led October 1. 1914.
T0 all whom it may concern" Be it known that I, JOHN S. vVon'rn,n citizen of the United States, and :i resident of Coatesville, county of Chester, Stute of Pennsylvania, hzive invented Certain lm- Aprovements in TMmping-Cars, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates 'to certain improvements in dumping cars, particularlyv cnrs used for dumping ores and likeA material, and it is especially ndliptod'for use in con neotion with iron and steel works, where material is to he quickly discharged.
One object of the invention is to instruct a car of this type so that the material cnn be dumped from one end of the cnr; the our carrying its own mechanism by which the body is raised to such en angle as to he discharged by gravity. n
A further object of the intention to )mount the draw her with the coupling on the tilting body of the our.
In the accompanying drawing:mlfigure 1, is a side View of my improved dumping car; and Fig. 2, is a plan view of the' sinne.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the main framework of the car supported on trucks 2 of the usual type, :ind :f: the fori-mrd end of this frame is e. draw hur and emr pling 3 by which the ear. can he coupled to another car, if desired. 'The truck .are sin plied with Athe usual, brake mechanism and this brake inet-.hernan controlled from the hand wheel et the werd end of the car.

As soon :xs the body portion nvssnmes its normal position, the latch automatically engages the door. i
The operation is folloWss-The cnr, with the load thereon, is moved to the position vwhere it is desired to dump the load the locomotive is uncoupled fron-i the car and the rope i3 is attached to the locomotive. or, if there is a hoisting engine located at a ixed point, it can be used insteed of the locomotive if desired. The brakes are applied to the Wheels of the car end blocks are preferably used '51o hold the cnr in n Fixed position reliiti'e to the dumping point. As tension is applied to the rope 13 it causes the nniin rope drinn 2O to ro`Y tete `(and this motion is in'iparted to the free end of the car body and, as the ropes or chains 21 are coiled on the drinn, the body is turned on its pivot 8 to such nn angle that the load will slide from the body por tion and will be discharged from the point desired. As soon the load is discharged, the sleek is releasedj the Weight of the body portion causing the drinn E20 to rei'erse its movement and pzsy out the ropes or chains 21 :ind to coil the rope 1.3 on its drinn, after `which the car can be moved to receii'e another load. in some instances, a band or other suitable brokel may be applied to n drum on the shaft ll :ind this brake 3l inn): be connected to :in operating lever Si? by n rod' 33, so that a num standing on the bothv of the cer at the mast can regir-:ite the speed oi rotation of the drinn il., if Jround neces sary.

The combination in a dumping our, of a mein frame; Wheelsl on which thefrzinie is' mounted; n bod;r portion pivoted :it one end of the innin traino: n mest inminbfd on the opposite end of the cor from the pivot; a. drum; n-hoisting chain or rope passing from one end of the body portion to the drum; and a second drum carried on the first 1nentioned frame sind inning n rope thereon to which motion can be imparted by mechanism independent of the car, so as to raise the body portion to the dm'nping position.
.2. The cpmbination of car having trucks; n lmain frame supporti-d on the trucks; a body portion pivoted to the main frame at one end, said body portion being shorter than the main frame; a mast located at the opposite end of the main frame and overhanging the end of the body portion; a drum; a sheave at the upper end of the mast; a chain Ior rope attached to the booom of the body portion and extending over the sheave and to the drum; a second drinn geared to the first mentioned drum; and e. rope mounted on the said second drum and arranged to have motion imparted to it independently of the car so that7 when tension is applied to said rope, the body portion will be turned on its pivot and its contents dumped.
The combination in a dumping car, of trasclf; n main frame mounted. on the trucks; n body portion pivoted to the main freine et one end and having an extension et the opposite end projecting below the niain freine; a mest secured to the main freine in admnce of the body portion and extending rearwardly over the body p0rtion; e sheave carriedy by the body portion; :i rope or chain passing` from the extension of the body portion np and around the she-fire; a drinn to which the rope 0r chain is attached; a second drum geared to the iii-st inentimied drum; apd a rope leading from smid second drum to any means for imparting motion to the rope so as to causev the mein drinn to turn and to lift the free end oi' the body portion to such an incline :is will discharge its load.
4.. The combination in n car, of a. main traine; wheels supporting the main frame; n coupling secured to one end of the main frame" a pivot at the opposite end of the main treme; a body portion connected to the mein freine by said pivot; a coupling attached to the rear of the body portion; .and means los tilting the body portion to the dumping position, the rear coupling moving with said body portion.
ln testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
