Application filed August 12, 191%. Serial No. 856,357
l I To all whom it may concern:
' Wrenches, of which the following is a speciprovide a wrench fication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches.
According to my invention, I provide a wrench of that type generally known as monkey wrench, to embody in a single device a wrench comprising fixed and pivoted jaws.
An object of the present invention is to with double jaw faces at one end thereof upon opposite sides of the same, one of which pairs of jaws is of the rigid type, while the other pair of said jaws embody pivoted members preferably having racked faces for better gripping the object, and with means operating in connection with the pivoted jaws to cause thesame to be released from the work when bound or gripped thereto.
With the above general objects in view, and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed, and in describing the invention more fully in detail reference will be had, to the accompanying drawing by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which drawmg,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the wrench, shown partly in section. Fig. is an end view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectlonal view through the pivoted outer jaw, taken on lines III-III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4t 1s a detail perspective view of the pivoted outer jaw detached.
Briefly described, the invention consists of a wrench generally known as a monkey wrench and embodies in a single structure a pair of jaws on each side of the shank, one of which pairs of jaws is rigld, while the other pair is pivoted, and is provided on the face with rack teeth, better to enable the pivoted jaws to grip a circular body such as a pipe or rod. Means are provided to move the jaws the desired distances apart, a further means are provided in connection wlth the pivoted outer jaw so that the said aw the nature of may be released from the work when bound or-gripped thereto.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates the handle of the wrench which Specification of Letters Patent. Pgtgntged Mar, 23, 1915,
is of hollow construction and preferably open at its inner end so that the shank carried by the outer jaw and moving therethrough Wlll have a longer amount of play and be permitted to grip larger and smaller objects. The tubular handle 10 is enlarged intermediate its ends as at 11, providing a recess 12 for the reception of an operating threaded nut 13.
A pair of inner jaws are formed on the outer end of the handle 10 by increasing in thickness and diameter the said handle to provide a rigid inner jaw 14:, and a sup port 15'for the pivoted inner jaw 16. The support 15 is bifurcated at its outer end and receives a cross pin 17 passed through the shank 18 of the said pivoted inner jaw 16,
while the face of the said jaw is provided with a series of rack teeth 19 for the purpose of gripping a circular or round body.
The outer jaws are carried by the shank 20, preferably rectangular in cross section and which shank is received in the hollow handle 10, it being noted that the central passage in the said handle is of the same shape as the said shank to prevent the shank from turning therein. Spiral threads 21 are provided on the inner end of the shank 20, and are engaged by the operating nut 13 so that the said shank may be moved in an inward and outward direction. A pair of outer jaws cooperating with the inner jaws 1 1 and 16 are carried on the outer end of the nection with the pivot point 2 1, and prevent undue injury and harm to the same. A finger or trigger 28 extends from the shank 25 and is engaged on its inner face bya coil spring 29 seated in a recess 30 formed in the outer end on a shank 20, which spring normally tends to hold the pivoted outer jaw 26 in an inward direction, while the operating face on the outer jaw is provided with teeth 81.
The inner and outer jaws are moved to the desired position by the operating nut 13, engaging the threaded portion 21 of the shank 20. When the toothed faces 19 and 21 of the pivoted jaws 16 and 26 are gripped upon a round body, and it being desired to release the same from the body, it is only necessary to strike or forcibly engage the trigger 28 against the tension of the spring 29 and move the said trigger in an inward direction and the jaw 26 in a slight outer direction to unbind the movable jaws from the work and permit the operating nut 13 to be shifted.
While the forms of the'invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the splrit and scope of the invention as clalmed.
flames oi this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the What I claim as new is 1- In a wrench, a hollow handle portion, afiXed and pivoted jaw carried by the outer end of the hollow handle, a threaded shank mounted in said hollow handle, means for moving said shank in said handle, a fixed jaw carried by the outer end of said shank operating in connection with the fixed inner jaw, a pair of lugs carried by the outer end of said shank, a pivoted outer jaw positioned in said lugs and operating in connection with the pivoted inner jaw, the said shank having recess in its outer end, a coil spring received in said recess, and a trigger carried by the pivoted outer jaw adapted to overlie the spring and be engaged by the same to cause the pivoted jaw to move in an outward direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
