VICTOR NELSON PERRY, OF BA'IAVIA, NEW YORK.
PNEUMATIC STACKER.
Application filed April 11, 1914. Serial No. 831,163.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR N. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, andra resident of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Stackers, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention is an improvement in pneumatic stackers, and has for'its object to provide a fan for use in pneumatic stackers, so arranged that the straw may be delivered axially of the fan directly to the blades or vanes, wherein the central portion of the fan is free and unobstructed to receive the straw, and wherein a double blade construction is provided, the two portions of the blade being arranged one behind the other, the front portion being the straw blade and the rear portion the air blade.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a threshing machine provided with the improved stacker, thestacker being in section, Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 22 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the blades or vanes.
' end is connected with the usual discharge- The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a thresher 1, and the fan casing 2 of cylindrical form for the stacker is provided with an axial inlet 3 and with a tangential outlet 4. The outer tube 5, and the opposite face of the casing 2 from the inlet has a central opening through which the fan hub and its shaft project.
The fan comprises a circular plateor disk 7, and a ring 13, which are connected by blades or vanes, to be described, and the plate or disk 7 is secured to the hub 6 of the fan, by means of bolts 6 and the opening 3 of the fan casing through which the shaft and the hub extends is large enough to prevent any engagement of the hub with the fan casing 1.
The fan shaft 9 is journaled in suitable bearings 11, on a bracket arm 12, extending rearwardly from the frame of the thresher, and the hub is rigidly connected with the shaft by means of a key 10. A pulley 14 is secured to the shaft at the opposite side of the bracket from the fan, and the pulley is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lwal'. 23, 1915.
adapted for engagement by a belt or the like to connect the shaft 9 with a moving part of the thresher, whereby to rotatethe shaft 9 and the fan connected therewithi The fan is constitutedby the disk 7 the ring 13 and four blades or vanes which are arranged between the ring and thedisk and connect the ring to the disk. Each of the blades or vanes consists of two portions 14 and 14*, arranged at an acute angle with respect to each other and connected by an arched or curved portion .15, the said 'portions 1414 -15 being integral. The portions 14 and 14 are curved radially with respect to the fan, in the same direction,
and the portion 14 is of greater length than the portion 14. A. trough 16 is provided for carrying the straw from the thresher to the fan, the said trough passing through the inlet 3 and through the opening of the ring 13, and delivering to the blades or vanes.
The straw from the thresher is carried by the trough 16, and delivered to the fan, being deposited directly upon the blades. Each blade or vane is thus double and the sheet of material from which each blade or vane is formed is provided ateach side edge with an angular flange 17, and each flange is provided with openings 18, for receiving rivets 19 or the like to connect the flanges to the disk 7 and the ring 13.
The rivets pass through the openings 18 and through registering openings in the disk and ring, and the said blades or vanes thus connect the ring to the disk. The areshaped portion 15 of each blade or vanesis at the inner edge of the ring 13, and'between the portions of each blade the said ring is provided with a series of openings 20.
The openings 20 provide for the inlet of air to the space between the portions of the blade. The flanges 17. of the blades it will be noticed, are between the portions 14 and 14*, so that they do not obstruct the departure of the straw from the fan. Because of the fact that the straw is deposited directlysupported at each side throughout their en- When the straw leaves the trough 16, it
passes through the large central opening of the ring 13, into a position directly upon the blades of the fan. The suction created by the blades together with the centrifugal force causes the straw to be forced outwardly through the tangential outlet 4: of the casing.
/Vhen the outlet of the fan casing is reached, the straw leaves the fan and is thrown directly upward, the blades assisting the air current in this operation. The portion 14 of each blade or vane is the straw blade, while-theportion l is the air blade. When the straw blade reaches the outlet of the casing, a strong upward motion is imparted to the straw by the blade, and this motion is assisted by the current of air from the rear or air blade. Since there is no central spider and no shaft at the center of the fan there is nothing to cause winding of the straw and consequent friction, so that less power is required to operate the improved fan than with the ordinary fan.
The straw cannot hang over or become twisted around the fan blade, nor will it be whipped to pieces by the blades nor dragged along against the sides of the fan casing. Hence a large amount of friction found in the ordinary fan is eliminated. When the straw leaves the fan casing, it receives not only the impetus of the straw portion 14, but also receives the blast from the portion immediately following.
