INTERNALCOMBUSTION GAS-TURBINL.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application led October 31, 1913. Serial No. 798,51
Toall fr0/10m it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, LOUIS PA'rUREL and PIERRE LAPERTOT, citizens of the French Rel public, residing at St.-tienne, in France,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Gas- Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a gas turbine in which the combustion of the when it enters in the chamber, as in certain internal combustion motors.
In order that the invention may be well understood it is illustrated by way of example in the annexed drawing.
Figure1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the turbine. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the upper half part of the same on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The turbine comprises a casing A1 in which is a chamber A, having a number of distributers B and surrounded by the vanes C of a rotor D keyed on a shaft E.
r1`he motive power is furnished by the action on the vanes C of combustion gases,
said combustion in the chamber A being continuous. With this object in view the air and gas or spirit are separately introduced into said chamber A by means of an injector F, and owing to the pressure and chamber due to the igfresh mixture is ignited as soon as it' is introduced, giving rise to a super-pressure which counterbalances the loss of charge 40 due to the continual discharge through the distributers B. This cycle of working is indefinitely continued it' the quantities of air and gas or .spirit are exactly proportioned to the discharge by the distributers. on the vanes C as in an ordinary turbine. After the expansion of the gases they are collected in a crown G having a discharge collector H.
In order to obtain a good caloric insula- ,tion of the chamber A, it is surrounded by a jacket of" asbestos I also forming an in sulating sleeve around the shaft E. The counter-pressure due to the expanded gases is reduced to the minimum by a circulation 5 of fresh air produced by wings J fixed to the wheel D. The air is sucked 1n Irom the outside by the rotation of the wings through the space J1 and is driven into the collector G and expels the burned gases therefrom. This fresh air also cools the vanes and crown of the turbine.
According to the arrangement illustrated the mctive power is transmitted from the shaft E to a speed reducer K 'which commands the air compressor, the pump and other accessories of the turbine.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An internal combustion gas turbine comprising a casing, an annular combustion chamber therein inwhich high temperature and pressure are maintained by the continuous ignition ofl a combustible mixture, a rotor, vanes thereon, means for injecting air and fuel separately into said chamber, means for directing the burned gases from said chamber onto the vanes of said rotor, a shaft supporting said rotor, a heat insulating jacket surrounding said annular chamber and also Jforming an insulating sleeve around said shaft, a collecting chamber surrounding said rotor, and means for cooling said rotor and for discharging the burned gases out of the collecting chamber.
2. An internal combustion gas turbine comprising a casing, an annular combustion chamber therein in which high temperature and pressure are maintained by the continuous ignition of a combustible mixture` a rotor, vanes thereon, means for injecting air and fuel separately into said chamber, means for directing the burned gases from said chamber onto the vanes of said rotor, a shaft supporting said rotor, a heat insulating jacket surrounding said annular chamber and also forming an insulating sleeve around said shaf a collecting chamber surrounding said r tor, and *wings on said rotor adapted to suck fresh air into said collecting chamber to expel the burned gases therefrom and also to cool said rotor.
In witness whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
