Inventor THE NORRIS FETFRS c0" PHOm-LITHQ. WASHINGTON. D. C.
To all whom it may concern:
ANDREW J: COMER, on CULLISON, KANSAS. 1
Be it known that 1, ANDREW CoMER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cullison, in the county of Pratt and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Lister, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to listing plows or cultivators especially designed for use upon two rows simultaneously, one ofthe objects of the invention being to provide a machine of this character which isperfectly balanced so that the draft animal or animals will not be subjected to undesirable strain and can ghus more readily draw the machine over a eld.
A further object is to provide a simple and compact machine the beam adjusting levers of which are readily accessible and are mounted in a simple and efficientmanner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the descriptionproceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction; hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of 1 the invention herein disclosed can be made tion of which extends a spindle 3.
within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:Figure l is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the axle.-
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an axle provided, at each end, with an arch 2 from the outer por- The outer arm 2 of each arch 2 is off-set rearwardly, as shown especially in .Fig. 2 so that the spindles 3 are thus held in line with the intermediate portion of the axle 1. These spindles are adapted to be engaged by the supporting wheels 4:.
Secured upon the intermediate portion of the axle 1 is a draft tongue 5 and mounted on the rear portion of this tongue is a support 6 carrying a seat 7 The tongue 5 extends over and is secured to the middle portion of a front strip 8. This front strip is preferably formed of a strap twisted at its center so as to bring one of its broad faces endsof the front strip 8 are bent rearwardly as at 9' and lap and are secured to the side strips 10 through which .the spindles 3-exten 1 j It will be seen that a compact frame structure 1s provided, the wheel'supported spin ,ED-sTArs -PATEN OFFICE specificati'on'of Letters Patent- Patented Mar. 23, 1915. i 1 Application filed September 8, 1914., seria1 no. 860,719. i I
attheftop; for the beam rest on. The i dles 3 being so located that, when a person 7 1s occupying the seat 7, the machine will be perfectly balanced and 'the draft animal will not be subjected to unnecessary strain.
Secured to the front strip 8 at each side of the beam 5 are brackets 11 and each ofv these brackets extend between plates 12 secured to the sides of a beam 13. Said beam can be of. any desired construction and has integral standard 14 to which a mold board 15 may be attached. If preferred, however, any other suitable cultivating means such as disks may be secured to the standards.
. Secured to and extending rearwardly from the inner side of each of the arches 2 is a toothed segment 16 having an arm 17 extend- I ing forwardly from the lower end thereof and bolted'or otherwise secured to the intermediate portion of the axle 1. A lever 18 is pivotally mounted upon the arm 17 of each segment 16 and carries a spring pressed pawl 19 designed to engage the-adjacent segment,
A whiifle tree 21 is mounted under the v I front strip 8 and preferably works about the bolt 22 which is employed for attaching the draft beam 5 to said front strip 8.
It is to be understood that, ,under some conditions, the axle can be reversed in order to obtain the desired balance, the arms 2 being inclined forwardly relative to'the intermediate portion of the axle instead of rearwardly as shown. Furthermore, instead of. using the particular form of axle in connection with an ordinary lister such as described, the same can be used in connection'with a gang plow of that type propelled by means of a tractor. Such use merely involves the enlargement of the axle so as to accommodate a greater number of plows. V I
By providing the arches in the axle, a low riding structure is provided, said arched portions extending over the rows so as not to injure the plants.
What is claimed is A lister including an axle having arched end portions, the outer arms of each arch being off-set rearwardly, spindles outstanding from said outer arms of the arches and held thereby out of line "with the intermediate portion of the axle, supporting Wheels engaging the spindles, a front frame memher, a draft beam secured upon said frame member and" the intermediate portion of the axle, and side strips secured to the ends of the front frame member and mounted on the spindles.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa- Vitnesses:
