ADJUSTBLE FILM-REEL.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL G. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county; of Wayne and .State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Film-Reels, of which-the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs..
In the use of films on the reels of moving picture machines, it frequently happens that' because of the different lengths ofl thefi-lms, the reels are not' fully loaded and if the ordinary rim cover is used, theilm becomes loose and shifts while lthe reel is in shipgilit, frequently to the detriment ofthe The invention consists in the matters hereinafter more fully set forth and more particularly p claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view partially in side elevation and partially broken away and in sectionof a form of reel that embodies features of the invention, and, Fig. 2 is a view of the rim thereof. v
'Referring 'to the drawi gs, a circularintervals around its periphery in which the tongues 5 of .guide lugs 6 are free to play. The inner ends of the tongues are secured to or integrally formed on the margin of a spring band 7. whose end portions overlap and are slotted to be adjustably-secured as by a thumb 'screw 8 o r the like.V The lugs 6 have sliding engagement against the plate 2 and. are provided with curved obliquelydisposed slots 9 in which headed studs or Specification of Letters Patent.' pins 10 of lthe adjacent. plate. have sliding engagement. The slots are enlarged at cor.- respondlng ends 4to permit the withdrawal over the heads lof the studs. Because of the disposition ofthe springfband between the plates, it may be contracted or expanded as desired by loosening the thumb nut, so as to closely encircle a film that is rolled upon theV reel regardless of Whether the reel is com,-
pletely filled or not. This makes the device particularly adaptable for shipping purposes ias it prevents any chafing or wearing of the film which` would occur of the lilm' were -not held closely wrapped about lthe .journal of the reel;
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do' not ,care to limit myself to any particular form and arrangement of parts except as set forth in the appended claims'.
I claim as mV invention 1. A- film reel'having side plates in spaced relation, a spring rim with overlapped ends l lying vbetween the marginal portions of the plate, means for securing the overlapping .ends in adjusted relation, and lateral extensions on the rim in adjustablv interlocked relation 'with one of the plates with one of the sides. f.
2. In a film reel havingside plates in spaced relation, a collapsible rim lying between the plates, extensions integrally formed .on the rim in sliding interlocked relation with one of the plates, the end portions of the rim lying in overlapped relation, `and means for securing the overlapped ends gm adjusted position, the connections between the .extensions and contiguous plate maintaining the rim in substantially concen- "tric posltlon.
' l 3.. In a yfilm reel having side plates in spaced relation, a collapsible rim with overlapped ends thatlies between the marginal portions of the plate, lateral extensions on the rim loosely-engaging marginal ref cesss in oneof the side plates and having sliding engagement lwith the face of the plate, means on the latter plate detachably securing the plate and contiguous ortions of the rim, and means for securing t e overlapped ends in, adjusted relation.'
4. A film reel having a pair of side platesl in spaced relation, studs on one of the plates, a collapsible rim with overlapped portions that, lies qbetween the plates, entensions'ot the rim' bent to have sliding engagement with the face of the plate and provided with oblique slots engaged by the studs, and means for securing the overlapping end poitions in adjusted relation.
5. ln a ilmreel having side plates .in spaced relation, a collapsible rim of spring material having overlapped slotted end por-r tions, means engaging the slotted end portions for securing them in adjustable relation, lateral extensions of the rim bent to v loear against a face of one of the plates with Siemen which they have sliding; engagement, and projections on the plate interlocking with i5 *guide slots onvthe extensions for defining the motion of. the rim and niaintaining it substantially in concentric relation in the MCHEL Gr. DELNEY.
