To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, GEORGE R. Senora:- nmnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful ,Improvement in Supports and Ties for (Toner-ete-Reinforcing Bars. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined reinforcing bar, support and t e of my impro ed, construction. Fig. 2 is ii side elcvational view of the combined support and tie seen in Fig. l, and showing the some associated with a pair of crossed reini'oro ing rods. My invention relates generally to rein forced concrete construction, nd more pa r ticularly to a support and tie for the metal rods or liars used in reinforcing concrete floors, ceilings. walls and like struciuzcs.
My present invention is an imprv'n'ement upon the combined support and tie disclosed in an application for patent filed by me April 4, 1913, Serial No. 758.837, and should be read in connection with a copending .ap lication filed by me May 31, 1913,

In reinforcing concrcte'floors, ceilings, and walls, it is desirable and in nearly all instances essential that the reinforcing rods he supported in a plane above or away from the temporary flooring or form upon which the concrete laid. and to this end I have devised a compamtivcly simple, strong and inexpensive one piece support and tie, which can be readily associated with the reinforcing rods. and which will tie the same together. and support them a substantial distance chore the floor or form while the concrete in plastic condition is being poured or distributed thereupon.

"In the Form oi device ill"sfrated in F g. 1 the combined su port and t e is formed from a sin qie piece of sheet metal, the same being and one end portion of the piece of sheet metal constitutes a vertical leg 10, the lower end of which is preferably notched as designated by 11, so as to form points 12 at the lower corners of said leg, which points engage in the false work or form upon which the concrete is laid, thereby anchoring said device and preventing the same from shifting laterally after being properly ositioned. The section of material from which the device is formed is bent downward from the upper end of the leg 10 to form a comparatively short leg 13 which is approximately half the lengthof the leg 10 and the upper portions of the legs 10 and 13 are notched or cut away as designated bye 14 to form a seat t'pr one of the reinforcing rods'. The end of the section of material at the upper end of the inclined leg 16 is bent downward designated by 18 and the lower edge of this downwardly bent portion is adapted to engage on top of the upper one of the supported reinforcing rods when the device is properly applied thereto. in aplying this form of support and tie to a pair of crossed reinforcing rods, rods are liiited a short distanceaway irom the false work or form after which the combined support and tie is applied to the upper rod A by manipulating said device so that sa d rod occupies the notch ill The .itYltfQ is now moved toward the opposite rod B and at the same time said device is swung upward so that the lower one of the rods 15 engages in the scat 15 and the upper rod A. engages in the notches or cutaway portions 14. The rods A and ll are now permitted to move downward until the points 12 on the lower end of the leg 10 on gage the false work or form and the weight of the rods transmitted through the device causes the same to perform the functions of a lever and automatically bring about a gripping action of the device upon both rods. The device fulcrums upon the lower rod B and the edge of the downwardly bent portion 18 en agcs .nd grips the top of the upper roo A and said rod A. bearing upon the lower rod B holds the same firmly in its seat.

From the upper end of the leg 19 the section of wire is bent downward and outward to form a curved seat 21 which is adapted to receive the lower one of the reinforcing rods, and from this seat the section of wire is bent upward to form an inclined leg 22 which occupies an angle of approximately 45 relatively to a horizontal plane and the upper end of this inclined leg is bent upwardly and thence downwardly to form a curved hook 23 which when the device is applied for use engages over the upper one of the reinforcing rods. in th s form of the deiice the weight of the supported rods acting through the device causes the same to lit form the functions of a h cn the same utili' ,ng the lower rod as a fulcrum and gripping and tying together both rods in the same manner as heretofore described in connection with the device illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

Formed in the tops ot the legs are notches 26 which receive the lower one of a pair of crossed rods and the upper one of said rods engages in a notch 27 formed in the unders de of the upper one of the end legs 25. The lower edge of the lower end leg 25 is notched or cut away as designated by 528 so as to form points it) at the lower corners of the device. which points are adapted to engage the flooring or false work to anchor the device and hold the same from slipping upon the flooring or false work when in service.
In the form of the device illustrated in Figs. 7 and S. the comb ned support and chair formed from a single piece of sheet metal comprising a main body portion 30, which occupics an inclined position when applied to the reinforcing rods, and the central portion of this body is notched from onc side as designated by 31, to accommodate and form a 'seat for the lower one of the supporting rods. The lower end of this portion of the bodv 30 is notched or cut awa; as designated by 32 to form anchoring points 33 which engage with the false work or form to prcvent the device from slipping while in use. The upper end of the body 30 is bent outwardlv and downwardly to form a curved seat 34 which, when the device is applied for use engages over the up per one of the supporting rods. The body 30 is reinforced by a vertically disposed stiffening rib 85, which is pressed or stamped from the material of which the device is formed.
The device illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 is similar to the device illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, but it is intended for use in connection with a single reinforcing rod, and where such construction is carried out the upper end of the .body of the device is bent downward as desi ated by 36 and the lower edge of this it! portion is notched as designated by 37, to provide a seat for the su ported rod.
he forms of devices illustrated in Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive difler slightly in structural details, but are the same in principle as the form of device illustrated in Figs, 1 and 2, inasmuch as all the modified constructions utilize the weight of the sup orted iods for effecting a gripping of Sci rods, and the consequent tying together of a pair of crossed rods.
Devices of my improved construction are very simple, can be chea ly manufactured, can be readily combined with reinforcing rods, and any one of the various forms of the device when properly applied performs the functions of a lever.
The gripping action of the device on the supported hers is obtained by the weight of the bars reacting through the support, which latter fulcrums upon the lower one of the supported bars and transmitting the re sulting reaction through leverage to the up per bar, consequently tying the two bars together, and supporting the same in a substantial manner the desired distance above or away from the surface of the false work or form upon which the concrete is laid.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of my improved sup ort and tie can be made and substituted fiir those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A device of the class described formed of a Single piece of metal and comprisin a supporting member adapted to be ap lie to a pair of crossed reinforcing re s, 'said member being provided with a seat for the lower one of the rods, which seat is located a substantial distance to one side of the point of contact between the lower end of the supporting member and the floor or form on which the device is positioned, said member being open at one side above the seat for the lower rod to accommodate the upper one of the reinforcing rods, the upper en of 'said supporting member being provided with a single bearing which is located above and a substantial distance to one side of the seat for the lower oneof the rods, and which bearing is adapted to on age the top of the upper one of the rein orcing rods, which construction permits the supporting member to tilt and occupy an inclined position when applied to the reinforcing rods,
