Be it known that I, CHARLES B. Rose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and btate of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Magneto Adjustment, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to engines in which the motive power is supplied by an explosive element ignited by an electric discharge, and it relates more particularly to an adjustment of certain parts simultaneously to preserve their continuous alinement as will be hereinafter more clearly set forth.
Referring to the drawings in which simi lar letters indicate identical parts-.Figure l is an end elevation of an explosive engine embodying my invention and part broken away. Fig. 2 is a detail side .elevation 1n part section illustrating my device. Figs. 8 and 4 are details.
In the drawings 1 is an engine of a well known type, and includes the casing 2, which is considered as part of the engine frame, and a casing 3 secured to the casing 2 in any suitable manner, the latter casing being employed to ctver mechanism through which the fan and magneto are operated. I show only the sprocket 5 which is rigidly mounted on the crank-shaft 4 of the engine 1. Engaging with the sprocket 5 is a chain 6 which imparts motion to a sprocket 7 rigidly secured on the end of a shaft 8.
The casing 3 is constructed with an opening 9 which registers with a similar opening 10 in the casing 2; through this open space the shaft 8 operates and is journaled in an eccentric sleeve 1l which is turnable in a bearing l2 in the casing 2, the bearing 12 being partly split so that the eccentric sleeve 11 can be held rigidly therein by 'means of a bolt 13 connecting the split porthe rear end 14 of the sleeve .il is concentric with the shaft 8, and is journaled in a bearing l5 on a kbracket 16 and preferably integral therewith. The bracket 16 is supported on the casing Qby and l8 fitted to holes in the bracket, ont extending through. holes in the casing 2 which are of greater diameter than the bolts.

Heretofore when the chain (3 has become slack and it has been necessary to tighten it, the magneto. shaft 20 would be disconnected from the shaft 8 and both would have to be adjusted separately, by my improvement however, the adjustment of both shafts is simultaneous and their alinement is maintained, and I secure this by the following simple operation. vIt is supposed that the chain .6 has become slack, or is too tight, and it is desired to readjust it, the bolt 18 in the bearing 12, and the bolts 17 and 18 which secure the brackets 16 to the casing 2, are first loosened, the eccentric sleeve ll is then turned in the proper direction. and as the shaft 8 is moved thereby, it carries with it the magneto 19 and bracket 1G, the latter being supported by the bearing l5 in which -is journaled, concentric with the shaft 8, the rear end of the eccentric sleeve 1l, the bracket 16 being free to move as the are of greater diameter than the bolts li' and 18 which operate there-through. As soon as the chain has been adjusted as desired, the bolts are tightened and the parts are held securely in position, the. perfect alinement of the shafts 8 and 20 being preserved by reason of the simultaneous parts.
IVhat I claim is- 1. In an engine of the class described having a crank-shaft and an adjustable magneto, the combination with .the magnetoshaft, of means to convey power from the crank-shaft to the magneto-shaft to operate the latter, said means including a shaft connected to the magnetoshaft and in alinement therewith, and means to adjust said shaft and magneto-shaft simultaneously to preserve said alinement.

In an engine of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank-shaftjournaled thereon, a sprocket on the crank-shaft, a bracket adjustably mounted on the frame, a magneto supported on'said bracket, a magneto-shaft, a shaft connected with the magneto-shaft in alinement therewith and having a sprocket connected by a chain with the sprocket on the crank-shaft to convey power from the latter to operate the magneto, and in which the shaft connected with the magneto-shaft is eccentiically journaled, said sleeve adapted to be turned to vary the tension of the chain and to adjust the bracket and magneto simultaneously.
4. In an engine of the class described, the combination ofv a frame, and a magneto adjustably mounted thereon, a crank-shaft, a magneto-shaft, and means to convey power fromthe crank-shaft to the magneto-shaft to4 operate the latter including a shaft connected `to the magneto-shaft and in laline- 'ment therewith, and having a sprocket connected by a chain with the sprocket on the crank-shaft to convey power from the latter to operate the magneto, a sleeve in a bearing onthevfiame and in which the shaft connected with the magneto-shaft is eccentrically jouinaled, an end of said sleeve concentric with said shaft and movable in a bearing on Ithe bracket, said sleeve adapted to be turned to vary the tension of the chain and to adjust the bracket and magneto simultaneously.
5. In an engine of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crankshaft journaled thereon, a sprocket on the crankshaft, a bracket adjustably mounted on the frame, a magneto .supported -by said bracket, a magneto-sliaft, a shaft connected with the magneto-shaft in alinement therewith and having a sprocket connected by a chain with the sprocket in the 'crankshaft to convey power from the latter to operate the magneto, a sleeve in a bearing on the frame and in which the shaft connected with the magneto shaft is eccentrically journaled, an end of said sleeve being concentric with said shaft and held in a bearing on the bracket, said sleeve adapted to be turned to vary the tension of the chain and Ato adjust the bracket and magneto simultaneously.

In combination with the engine crankshaft, a counter-shaft, connections between said shafts for imparting motion from the former to the latter, an eccentric `sleeve in which said counter-shaft is journaled; said sleeve being litted in a bearing in the machine frame whereby it may be turned and secured in different positions for tightening or loosening said driving connections, a magneto having its shaft coupled to said counter-shaft in alinement therewith, a sup port for said magneto, means carried by said support for maintaining said magnetoshaft in alinement with said counter-shaft,
together with means for adjusting said magneto simultaneously with its shaft and securing it in adjusted position.
