Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed November 27, 1914. Serial No. 874,130.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. KILLIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colgate, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter: Operators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shutter operators, and has for its object to provide a cheap and simple device for opening and closing the shutters from the inside of the dwelling and without raising the window.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a plan view of a window frame, partly in section, and showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the mechanism for locking the shutters in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view, on an enlarged scale, of the sleeve which is secured to the window frame. Fig. 1 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the operating lever which fits within the sleeve. Fig. 5 is a detail view, also on an enlarged scale, of the knob, and the stem which fits within said sleeve.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates the window frame, and 2 the shutters. The said window frame 1 is provided with an aperture 3 in which the cylindrical sleeve 1 is secured by screws or nails 5, said sleeve having its inner end pro vided with teeth 6. Within the sleeve 1 is revolubly mounted one end of the lever 7 which is provided with a square aperture 8, the outer end of said lever 7 being pivoted to one end of a rod 9, which latter is pivoted at its other end to a boss 10 on the shutter 2. On the inside of the window frame 1 is secured a metal disk 11 having an aperture through which the rod 12 projects, said rod having a knob 13 on its inner end and a square head let on its outer end which fits into the square aperture 8 in the lever 7. Just back of the square head 14 the rod 12 is provided with a disk 15 fixed thereto and provided with teeth 16 adapted to mesh with the teeth 6 on the sleeve 1. Surrounding the rod 12 between the disks 11 and 15 is a coiled spring 17 which keeps the teeth 6 and 16 normally in mesh, which prevents the knob 13, and consequently the lever 7, from being turned, thus holding the shutter 2 in any desired position. WVithin the frame 1 is secured a box 18 in which is a lift 19 pivoted to the uprights 20 and having one end bent down and resting against the bottom of said box, and having a rod 21 connected to one end of said lift and the other end projecting through to the inside of the dwelling. In the front of the box 18 are pivoted two latches 22 each adapted to cooperate with the catch 23 on the shutters 2 to lock the latter in the closed position.
The operation of the device is as follows: The shutters 2 being in the closed position, the rod 21 is pushed in causing the end of the lift 19 to raise and force the ends of the latches 22 out of contact with the catches 23. The knob 13 is then turned, which action causes the lever 7 to turn and through the medium of the rod 9 opens the shutter 2. After the shutter is in the desired position the knob is released which, owing to the action of the spring 17, causes the teeth 6 and 16 to come into mesh and hold the shutter locked in the desired position. The same operation is repeated to close the shutters, with the exception that the knobs are turned in the opposite direction. When the shutters are closed the catches 23 strike the latches 22 lifting them until they drop into the said catches.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A shutter operator comprising a cylindrical sleeve secured in the window frame and having teeth on its inner end, 'a lever having one end mounted in said sleeve and provided with a square aperture therein, means connecting the outer end of the said lever with the shutter, a rod having a square head on one end adapted to fit into the square aperture in thelever and a knob on In testimony whereof I affix my signalts inner end, a disk secured to said rod and tin-e 1n presence of two Witnesses.
having teeth on one side adapted to mesh FRANK J. KILLIAN. with the teeth on the saidsleeve, and means Witnesses:
to hold the teeth of the said sleeve and disk CHAPIN A. FERGUSON,
normally in mesh. MAUDE M. 'AMOSS.
