PEDAL CONNECTION.
Application filed April 17, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE EDGAR FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Henry and, State of lndiana, have invented a new and useful Pedal Connection, of which the following is a specification.
This case contains matter divided out of my Patent No. 991,494, granted May 9, 1911.
This invention. relates to a musical instrument of the pneumatic type in which bellows are used for motive power.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of pedal connections of very much simplified form and to arrange them to cooperate with the lower panel in such a way that when the lower panel is opened the pedals are exposed in a position from which they can be lowered easily by the foot and yet they can be folded into the casing in a very simple and convenient manner to permit closing the panels.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the lower portion of a pneumatic instrument showing one way in which this invention can be applied and showing the pedals folded in the casing, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing them swung out ready for playing.
The casing 10 is shown as provided with a vertical sliding panel 11 designed to be operated in any desired way. Back of the panel is located the operating bellows comprising a fixed leaf 12 and a movable leaf 13 at the rear thereof. 'This fixed leaf is mounted on brackets 14 and the movable leaf is connected by springs 15 with these brackets or with any other convenient part of the apparatus so that the springs will close the bellows and they can be forced open by foot power as is well understood in this art. Connected with the movable leaves are forwardly extending links 16 having a pronounced elbow about midway of their length and from which extend upwardly and forwardly rigid arms connected at their forward and upper ends with the pedals 17. These pedals, as usual, are pivoted at the bottom to a pair of links 18 which are pivoted inside the case in this instance to the brackets 14. Mounted on the bottom of the case in a position under the elbow of each Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915. Serial No. 621,480.
link 16 is a block 20 having a fiat surface preferably having a layer of felt at the top and adapted to receive this link under certain conditions. The advantage of this simple arrangement will be seen from a consideration of the mode of operation. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the operation of the bellows is simple and obvious, as the links 16 force the rear leaf directly back when the pedals are pushed inwardly. When it is desired to fold the device back into the casing the movement of raising the lower end of the pedals results at about the middle of its movement in lowering the elbow of each link 16 on the block :20. That results in preventing the further downward motion of this pivotal connection of the links with the pedals, so that the further swinging motion of the pedals can be carried on with the greatest of ease to bring the pedals back into the final position, as shown in Fig. 1. The pedals are held in this position by a latch 21 which engages the bottom rail 22 of a pedal. Then the panel can be closed to conceal the entire mechanism. When the panel is opened again the latch is raised by a projection 23 on the inside of the panel, which automatically trips the latch and allows the pedals to be swung out. The movement of putting the pedals back into position is accomplished by pushing the same rearwardly, with one movement of the foot which not only raises the pedal mechanism, but compresses the pedals and pushes them into proper position.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction shown but What I do claim is 1. In a musical instrument, the combination with the bellows having a movable leaf, of a link connected with the movable leaf and extending forward and having a fixed upwardly extending arm on the front enc, a pedal pivotally connected with the upper end of said arm, and a means for engaging the forwardly extending portion of said link when the link is forced down by the raising of the lower end of the pedal to limit its swinging motion.
2. In a musical instrument, the combination with the bellows having a movable leaf, of a link connected with the movable leaf and extending forward for a distance s11 stantially horizontally and then upward forming an elbow, a swinging pedal pivotally connected with the upper end of said link, an arm having a stationary pivotal point of support wlthin the casing and connected with the opposite end of said pedal, and a raised surface in the casing for engaging the elbow of said link when the link is forced down by the raising of the lower end of the pedal.
3. In a musical instrument, the combination of a casing, a pivoted pedal, means for normally and yieldingly forcing the pedal Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each h addressir. the Commissioner of Patentsv Washington, D. G.
