T0 all whom it may concern Beit known that l, ERNEST C. PREsooTr, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Haverhill, in the county ot' Essex and State oi Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Combined rfables and I roning-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in combined tables and ironing boards, and, more particularly, to certain improvements in the combined table and ironing board illustrated in my pending application, Serial No. 835,0?6, in which the ironing board is pivoted at one end to the table frame and is adapted to be swung to a position below the table top, when the article is to be used solely as a table, and to be moved on its pivots to a position of use over the top, where it is firmly supported by Vits pivots and by the top in parallel relation,

and at a distance thereabove.

ln the device disclosed in my said prior application, the ironing board may beheld adjacent one side only of the table, so that, if the article has been constructed "for use by a person who is-right-handed, it cannot be conveniently used by a person who is lefthanded, and vice versa. Furthermore, in said prior device the means for supporting the end section of the ironing board which is pivoted to the main section, did not support the same with the desired rigidity and it was somewhat inconvenient to move it into position for use.

rlhe primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and eifective means, whereby the board may be laterally adjusted crosswise of the table to difterent positions of use thereover, so that the same device may be readily adapted for use by either right or left-handed persons,

A Jfurther object is to provide an improved means for supporting the ironing board, and particularly the pivoted end section thereof.

I accomplish these objects by means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a combined table and ironing board, embodying my invention, and showing the board in position of use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken at the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and showing the board folded beneath the table top. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. /i is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, showing the movable parts in raised positions. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional View on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3.

As shown in the drawings, the table comprises the oblong frame a, supported by legs secured in the inner corners of the trame. A table top c is adapted to rest on the frame and is pivotally connected thereto by hinges Z arranged at what is the lett-hand end of the `frame, when 'facing the same in the position of Fig. l, said top being adapted to be.

swung upwardly from the frame to uncover the recess therebeneath, inclosed by the trame. A spring-catch c is preferably provided between the top and frame, at the opposite end of the top from its hinges, to loch them together, and a brace 0 is connected to the top, at its front edge, to hold the top in raised position, when desired, as shown 1n Fig. 4t.

An ironing board is provided, which is divided transversely to form a main section f., and a somewhat tapering end-section g, the abutting ends of said sections being connected by hinge-joints it, so that the end section may be folded back onto the upper side of the main section, as in my said prior device. A pair of cleats z' are rigidly secured to the under side of the main section f, and extend parallel to each other and to the longitudinal edges thereof, from a point adjacent its rounded end, to a point some distance beyond its abutting end, and legs j and j' are pivotally mounted between said cleats, one beneath the main section and one at the projecting ends of the cleats, and each being adapted to be swung between a position in which it is perpendicular to the cleats, and a position in which it is in the plane thereof.

The main section f is pivotally connected to the table frame, by means ot' a linlr le, which consists of a rigid rod bent to provide two end trunnions 7c', which extend, in axial alinement, into the right-hand table legs b, from their inner sides, at their upper ends, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5, arm-section 7:2, which extend at right angles to said trunnions, arm-sections 7c3, which extend at right angles to sections 7a2, and a horizontal pivot section 7st, which connects said armsections 7c3, and extends in parallelism to the aXis of trunnions 7c. The length of said pivot section la* is sui'iiciently greater than the distance between the cleats, to permit the board to be slid transversely thereon between a position in which one cleat engages one arm-section k3 and a position in which the other cleat engages the other arm-section 7e3.

ll/hen the parts are in position for use as a table, the end section g will be folded onto the main section f and the cleats z' will rest on asupporting bar m, as shown in Fig. 3, the whole board'thus being supported beneath the top.

When Vit is desired to use the ironing board, the table top is first released from the frame and swung upwardly to the left, until it is supported in a nearly vertical position, by the brace 0, as shown in Fig. 4. The top is thus held out of the path of movement of the board, which is then lifted and swung upwardly to the right, so that it is raised above the level of the table, and swung back beyond a vertical position, the link la being at the same time, swung upward and then downward Vuntil the arm-sections 7a2 rest on the bottoms of the notches formed in the upper edge of the table frame, such portions of the frame acting as stops, or supports therefor. Said arm-sections 7a2 will then be in horizontal positions and the sections 7c3 in vertical positions, while the end of the board may be swung into engagement with the side of the frame, so that it will be held in nearly vertical position, as shown in Fig. 4. The top is then released and lowered, so that it is returned to its normal position on the frame, the board being then heldout of its path of movement. The legs j, 7" are moved into positions perpendicular to the cleats, and then the board is swung downward on the pivot section 7c* until said legs rest on the surface of the top,

.said legs and the link 7c acting to hold the board in a horizontal position. The end section g is then unfolded and swung down onto the cleats z', which extend beyond the main section, so that they will act as a rigid support for said end section. 1t is noted that, while either or both legs j, j', may be employed, it is generally preferable, if only one is used, to use the one which is beneath the end section, as it supports the board with the greater firmness. The entire board will thus be rigidly supported on the table -top by the legs j, y", and the link la. and the latter will, at the same time, hold the board from longitudinal movement.

lVith the above described construction, the board may be slid laterally on the pivot section latin either direction from the Vmiddle position, in which it will be held, when folded, to positions. in which one side edge is directly over the adjacent side edge of the table top, that is, if it is to be used by a right-handed person, it will be moved tothe lower dotted position of Fig. 3, and if by a left-handed person to the upper dotted position in the same figure. rl`he board may, obviously be used in any'` intermediate position if desired, and willbe moved to the middle position when it is to be folded beneath the top.
