Beit known that I, DWIGHT S. COLE, a citizen :of lthe United States of America, re- A V siding at Grand Rapidshin Ithe county of Kent'and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements 1n Latches; .and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to .makeand use the same.
My invention relates -to improvements in latches, and .more particularly to latches adapted for use on refrigerators, and its object is to provide a simple and e'ective device that will operate to insure that theY door is closely and accurately closed; that will be easy of operation, simple in construction and not likely .touget out of order. The invention consists essentially of .a bolt carried on a pivoted lever arranged substantially at right. angles to the bolt and thence extended substantially parallel therewith and spaced apart therefrom to provide a handle whereby the boltvis manually .op-
erated; a spring to hold the boltyieldably engaged with a keeper; a lkeeper adapted to be attached to the casing'near the door and preferably provided with a roller to engage the bolt; the bolt being provided with oppo- `sitely inclined surfaces successively engaged by the keeper.l The first engagement being to force the bolt inward against the action of the spring and the other inclined surface adapted to engage the keeper and serve as 'a wedge toforce the door securely to closed position by the action of the spring, as will more .fully appear by reference. to the accompanying drawings, in which :e 4G Figure l is an elevation of a latch'embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same on the lineQ-Q' ofFig. 1; and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

is closed; 5 is a housing for the latch secured to the door and provided with outwardly projecting lugs or ears 6 at itsouter end.
7 is a longitudinally movable bolt within the housing having at its outer end oppositely inclined surfaces 8 and 9, the surface 9 being adapted to first engage the roller when the door is being closed and force the After this surface has passed the roller the oppositely inclined surface 8 will then engage the roller and the bolt will then act as a wedge between the roller .and `the door to force the door closely against the ycasing tojmaintain a tight joint therebetween. The bolt 7 has an inwardly extended shank 13 slidable in the inner end of the housing 5 .and on this shank is a spring 12 which normally holds the bolt yin extended position and zforceS :the samelbetween the roller at one side and the door at the other side. To sustain this pressure and permit the bolt to inove quite freely, the bolt is carried by the inner end 11 of a bell crank lever pivoted between the lugs 6 and extending substantially at right angles to the bolt, and to near the door at its inner end wherein the bolt is pivotally supported and carried thereby. The inner end of the lever thus sustains the bolt against'the inward stress applied thereto by the roller 1; the outer endY of the lever is preferably curved to form a handle 10 eX- i tending substantially parallel with the bolt and spaced apart therefrom and outside of the housing. This handle serves as a lever fulcrumed between the ears 6 to manually move the bolt inward on passing the roller .or yto release the bolt from the roller when the door isto be opened, and -at the same time serves as a handle to o en the door. This handle also can be use to force the bolt inward to cause the bolt to freely pass the Vroller when the door is being closed. The bolt has a limited pivotal movement .in the lever, whereby its movement into and out of the'casing is limited.
From the foregoing `description the operation of my invention will be readily un derstood without further explanation.'
What I claim is 1 1. A latch, comprising a keeper, a manuclined surface on the end of the bolt to engage the keeper and force the bolt inward ally operated'pivoted lever, a boltfcarried by said lever, a spring to yieldably force the bolt into engagement with the keeper, an inagainst the `'spring and means for movably supporting the inner end of the bolt.
2. A latch,` comprising a keeper, a longi tudinally movable bolt engaging the keeper at the outer end, a housing in which the bolt is slidably supported near the inner end, a-
manually operable lever pivoted in the housing and carrying the outer end of the bolt and a spring to engage the bolt with the keeper.
3. A latch, comprising a keeper having a roller therein, a normally operated pivoted lever, a longitudinally movable bolt carried by said lever, a spring to yieldably force the bolt outward into engagement with the keeper, an inclined surface on the end of the bolt to engage the roller and force the bolt inward against the spring, andan oppositely i' inclined surface on the end of the bolt ento' be attached to gaged by the roller to force the door to a closed position.
4. A latch, comprising a keeper adapted a door casing and having a roller at its outer end, a housing adapted tobe secured to a door, a bolt longitudinally movable in the housing, a bell crank lever pivoted in the housing and supporting the outer end of the bolt, oppositely inclined surfaces on the end of the bolt to successively engage the roller, and a spring on the bolt to yieldably force the same into contact with the roller.
5. A latch, comprising a keeper adapted roller at its outer end, a housing adapte be secured to a door and having outwardly to be attached to a caslng and having a projecting lugs at its outer end, a bolt longitudinally movable in the housing, a bell crank lever pivoted between having its outer' end extended to form a handle and its inner end pivotally supportthe lugs and` ing; the bolt, a spring on the bolt'to yieldably force the same outward,` and oppositely inclined surfaces on the end of the bolt to successively engage the roller.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses. DWIGHT S. COLE.
