GEORGE F. HILDEBRAND, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SOLE-LEATHER CUTTING AND SKIV IN G MACHINE.
Application filed June 24, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HILDEBRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sole-Leather Cutting and Skiving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for cutting strips of sole leather into lengths suitable for half soles or heels as desired and for skiving the inner ends of the half soles, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive machine that can be used for either purpose with a single simple adjustment which can be instantly effected.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
My machine consists of two standards 5 and 6 which are connected at the top by cross bar 7 and intermediate their ends by cross bar 8. These standards have feet 9 and 10 which are bolted to the fioor when the machine is in position for use. In the standards are central longitudinal transverse slots 11 and 12 through which passes knife 13 having a handle 14 on one end thereof. The other end of the knife is pivoted in bearings or ears 15 secured to standard 6. Brackets 16 and 17 are secured to standards 5 and 6 to provide a support for the swinging shelf 18 which rests upon brackets 16 and 17 when the machine is used for cutting leather. Table 18 is so pivoted by bolts 19 and 20 to the standards that the knife 13 just grazes the front end of the table when it is horizontal as shown in full lines or when its rear end is raised. The front end of the table may be provided with a lmife 22 which can be adjusted for wear.
In using my machine table 18 lies in the position shown when the operator is cutting Specification of Letters Patent.

leather. He raises one end of knife 13 and slips the leather the right distance beyond the knife and then bears down on the knife and cuts off the projecting strip. When using it to skive a piece of sole leather he grasps the rear end of the table and brings it up to the angle he desires to skive the leather. He then places the leather on the table, raises the knife 13 and then projects the leather beneath the knife as far as necessary and brings the knife down thereby cutting off the required amount from the edge.
A swinging brace 23 may be provided to hold table 18 at the desired skiving angle. The lower end of brace 23 is pivotally connected to slide 24 which is slidably mounted on rod 25 secured to the standards. A thumb screw 26 holds the slide at any desired elevation.
The cutting knife may move vertically instead of swinging if desired and be operated by a foot treadle. A frame instead of standards may be used to support the knife and table.
Having described my invention what I claim is A sole leather cutting and skiving machine comprising a pair of slotted standards suitably connected; a knife pivoted to one of said standards and passing through the slots in the standards; brackets secured to said standards; and a swinging table pivotally connected to the standards and resting on the brackets when in a position to support the leather to be cut, and adapted to have its rear end swung upwardly to support leather being skived.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this seventh day of June, 1913.
GEORGE F. HILDEBRAND.
