To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIO FRANCESCO TORAZZI, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, &c., residing at Ipswich, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in I/Vinch Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to wlnch mechanism, and consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention comprises improved means whereby when (in the case of a winch) a load is to be lowered, the flying around of the handle or handles reversely is automatically prevented, and reversal of rotation of geared shafting forming part ofthe machine is prevented but so as to allow rotation of the latter, under regulation, to be resumed without the handle moving.
Motor car starting or crank handles by flying back as a result of engine back firing, have, while being manipulated, caused severe injury to innumerable persons. This also applies to marine motors. This inventlon will enable any such handle as aforesaid to be operated safely, even by ladies and youths, but it is intended not only to prevent accidents and to promote the comfort of users, it is also devised for economy by saving time and by reducing friction. Ma-
terial of any description may be used.
Drawings herewith illustrate construction I may employ, but any person of mechanical skill may readily make variations while keeping to my invention as claimed herelnafter.
Figure 1 is a partly sectional front elevation of part of a hand crab or winch, with its parts in load lifting position. Fig. 2 shows the safety position taken by parts of Fig. 1 when a load has begun to descend. Fig. 3 shows, on a smaller scale, a front elevation of the parts in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an end view of part of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end view, partly sectional, showing in the posltion of Fig. 1, a gear wheel having a pawl carrier, and also shows a flanged rim which incloses the pawls and, Fig. 6 is a partly sectional end elevation showing brake details.
vary, according to the power required and other conditions of local use. In a motor car starting handle, its connections also vary to directly or indirectly engage and disengage the engine shaft as will be well understood. Fixed on the said pinion 6 (that is loose on the handle shaft) is an extension or disk 27, carrying a series of pawls 25, having enlarged ends 26 in sockets or recesses in the disk. The disk also supports springs 29 which normally force the pawl outer ends within a circular groove 2% in a flange 31 on a ring 30, the hub 22 of which is adapted to revolve upon any suitable bearing, as part 32 of an attachment 33 bolted to the frame or cheek 2. The said attachment 33 may at one part 32 form a bearing for the handle shaft 5 and it is also conveniently formed with a tapering or like socket or recess 34 and carries an outer cap 9. But an integral extension of the machine frame or check 2 could be provided instead of having the said attachment 33. A brake band 35 or the like is provided which during lifting presses the said flange 31 to keep the said ring 30 stationary leaving the handle, its shaft, parts 20, 6, and 27 (and others mentioned later) in rotation. Any suitable brake is used, as one having a handle 37 pivoted to framing as at 38 and kept in normal position (applying the band 35) by a weight or spring 39, my arresting devices operating at the proper time without the brake handle being manipulated.
There is fixed on the handle shaft 5 a block 14 having a tapering face 17 adapted (when the shaft slides as explained later) to meet and be stopped by the tapering socket 3d. The latter by frictional contact arrests, or assists in arresting, the rotation of the block, and thus of the handle shaft or the like 5. These contacting surfaces serve as a safeguard if other safety parts fail to act (as by reason of breakage). They are intended normally to act in conjunction with other parts to arrest the handle more rapidly, and
in practice the handle is found to stop even when extending horizontally.
The block 14 aforesaid has two or more teeth or projections 3 having respective longitudinal and oblique faces, the recesses be tween the teeth receiving similar teeth 21 projecting from or forming part of a collar 19 which is loose on the shaft 5. The said collarhas a peripheral groove or race 10 which is entered by two oppositely set'pawls 8, suitably pivoted as to the cap 9or other suitable pawls are used. 7 This collar 19 is one of those mentioned in this specification which may be readily modified by mechanically skilled persons, while retaining my stoppingefl'ects. t
When a load is being raised (the handle, its shaft, and the said block 14 turning) the pawls 8 remain loose in the race 10, the collar 19 being rotated by pressure ofthe teeth 3 of the block on the teeth 21 of the collar. WVhen rotationof thehandle shaft,5 reverses, the pawls 8 extend and grip the collar groove 10 and as the collar is thus,prevented from rotation its teeth 21 act as abut- -ments against which the teeth 3 .ofthe; block press. This causes a sliding movementof the block and its shaft 5 longitudinally, until the latter by its movement detaches the clutch member 20 from engagement with the recess18 in the side of the pinion 6 or any like part. This will allow the pinion 6 and gearing 7 meshing with it, to continue rotation under the influence of thereversing power (as the descending load) but subject to any brake which may be provided allowing thereof while after a very slight reverse rotation the motion of the shaft 5 and attached parts 20 19 and 1 1, and'the handle or the like, will have ceased. The sliding movement ofblock 14 occurs until, or. nearly until, its tapered face 17 contacts with the tapered socket 34. r The' arrangements I find best as to the brake have advantages in combination with the other'parts, as they'cause the winch to stop automatically, until the attendant moves thelever to permit the load .to. descend. Thepawls 25 of this brake are such that during load lifting they lean from the direction of rotation of the flange while on reversal of the handle shaft 5 they move, to
ward the direction of rotation of the said flange, and their workingfaces have such curves as to facilitate their gripping the groove 24 in flange 31 held by the brake band. Thus thepawl disk 27 and consequently pinion 6 or the like stops, and the parts driven, bv the-latter. As soon as the winch is to resume operations to allow the load to descend, the attendant moves the brake. lever 37 to raise the brake band 35 sufficiently to permit ring 30 to be rotated at the desired speed by the pressure of the brake pawls 25, whereupon the said ring forms-a brake member having external surfaces rubbing on the said-band 35 and having also internal surface s rubbing on the hub 32. thus regulating the movement as long as the winchman holds handle 37 or the like and promoting safe and certain opera- 7 surface ion said supporting structure and brake the shaft when the latter is moved to disengage said clutch, a, ratchet wheel loosely. mounted on said shaft, a pawl for engaging with said ratchet wheel to prevent rotation thereof in one direction, and means arranged, between said ratchet wheel and friction head for moving the latter toengagethe friction surface when the shaft is rotated in a direction to lock said ratchet wheel, substantially as described. 7
2. In, a device of the character described, the combination of a. supporting structure provided; with a friction surface, a shaft slidably journaled in said supporting structure, a transmission element loosely mounted onsaid shaft, a brake drum mounted for rotation coaxial with said transmission ele ment, yieldable gearing arranged between said brake drum and transmission element for interlocking the same during rotation in one direction, means for yieldingly holding said ,brake drum against rotation, a clutch between said transmission element and shaft arrangedto be disengaged when the shaft is movedin one direction, a friction head fixed on said shaft and adapted to engage the friction surface on said supporting structure and brake the shaft when the latter is moved todisengage sa1d clutch, and means associatedwith said frlction head for moving the latter into engagement with the frictionsurface when ,the shaft is rotated in one direction, substantially as described.
3, In a device of the character described, the combination of a supporting, structure provided with a friction surface, a shaft slidably journaledin said supporting structure, a transmission element loosely mounted on said shaft, a brake drum mounted for rotation ,coaxial of said transmission element, yieldable gearing arranged between said brake drum and transmission element 1 for interlockingthe same during rotation in one direction, means fornormally holding sald drum against rotation, means for controllmg the release from said first-named means, a clutch between said transmission element and shaft arranged to be disengaged when the latter is moved in one direction, a friction head fixed on said shaft and adapted to engage the friction surface on said supporting structure and brake the shaft when the latter is moved to disengage said clutch, and means associated with said friction head to move the same to engage the friction surface when the shaft is rotated in one direction, substantially as described.
l. In a device of the character described, the combination of a supporting structure provided with a friction surface, a shaft slidably journaled in said supporting structure, a transmission element loosely mounted on said shaft, a brake element mounted for rotation coaxial with said transmission element, one of said elements being provided with an annular groove, cooperating pawls carried by the other of said elements for bearing in the annular groove and interlocking said elements during rotation in one direction, means for yieldingly holding said brake element against rotation, a clutch between said transmission element and shaft arranged to be disengaged when the shaft is moved in one direction, a friction head fixed on said shaft and adapted to engage the friction surface on said supporting structure and brake the shaft when the latter is moved to disengage said clutch, and means associated with said friction head for moving the same to engage the friction surface when the shaft is rotated in one direction, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a supporting structure provided with a friction surface, a shaft siidably journaled in said supporting structure, a transmission element loosely mounted on said shaft, a brake element mounted coaxial with said transmission element, one of said elements being provided with an annular groove, cooperating pawls carried by the other of said elements for bearing in the annular groove and interlocking said elements during rotation in one direction, means for yieldingly holding said brake element against rotation, a clutch between said transmission element and shaft arranged to be disengaged when the shaft is moved in one direction, a friction head fixed on said shaft and adapted to engage the friction surface on said supporting structure and brake the shaft when the latter is moved to disengage said clutch, a ratchet wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, a pawl arranged to lock said ratchet wheel against rotation in one direction, and means interposed between said ratchet wheel and friction head for moving the latter to engage the friction surface when the shaft is rotated in a direction to lock said ratchet wheel, substantially as described.
