AIR-VALVE CONNECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed June as, 1913. Serial No. 776,314.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS J. SGHERMER HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deposit, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Valve Connectors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides a coupling intended chiefly for connecting an air compressor with the air valve of a pneumatic tire or like article when it is required to inflate the same, the purpose being to provide a coupling which may be quickly at tached or detached, and which when in use will maintain a close fit with the air valve to prevent any loss of pressure.
The invention consists of a body provided with a hollow stem to which the air tube is connected, said body having an opening to receive the end of the air valve and said opening being provided at opposite sides with valve-engaging devices, such as rods, which are provided with a plurality of ribs to match and engage with the threads of the air valve whereby positive connection is had between the body of the coupling and the air valve.
The invention further contemplates a device of the character stated having positive actuating means for the air valveengaging devices to admit of the same being easily and conveniently manipulated both when securing or releasing the coupling.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a detail view, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the coupling as it appears when inverted. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line a"0c of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line y-y of Fig. 6 looking to the left and showing the parts on a larger scale and the U-shaped lever in full lines. Fig. 6 is a vertical central longitudinal section of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The coupling comprises a body 1 in which is formed intercommunicating openings 2 and 3 and smaller openings at at the sides of the opening 3 and parallel with the open ing 2. A hollow stem 5 has one end fitted in the opening 2 and secured therein by means of a nut 6 threaded upon the projecting end of the stem. An opening 7 formed in a side of the hollow stem 5 communicates with the opening 3. A packing 3 is fitted within the opening 3 and insures a close joint between the coupling and the valve stem 9 when the device is in active operation. The hollow stem 5 is adapted to have a tube 10 fitted thereto, said tube being connected with a source of supply of compressed air, whereby the tire or other article to be pumped up is inflated.
Valve-engaging devices 11 are slidably fitted in the openings 4 and preferably consist of rods. The sides of the rods 11 facing the opening 3 are flattened and are provided with fine ribs 12 which correspond with the screw-threads at the outer end of the air valve 9 so as to make positive engagement therewith. The end portion of the rods 11 mounted in the openings at are made tapering so that when the rods 11 are projected their inner faces engage opposite sides of the valve 9 by means of a wedging action, thereby causing the rib faces 12 to engage positively with the threaded portion of the valve 9 so as to hold the parts securely. The outer ends of the rod 11 are flattened and transversely pierced to receive the reduced ends 13 of a pin 14, which latter is supported in the ends of a U shaped lever 15, the latter being mounted upon the hollow stem 5 and having end portions transversely pierced to receive the reduced ends 13. The relative size of the openings 4 and rods 11 is such as to admit of the valve engaging devices moving freely without binding.
When it is required to connect an air tube 10 to an air valve 9 the body 1 is placed in such position as to cause the threaded end of the valve 9 to enter the opening 3, pressure being exerted upon the body 1 to cause the end of the valve 9 to bear against the packing 8 to insure a close joint. The lever 15 is now operated to project the rods 11, the rib races 12 of which engage opposite sides of the threaded endof the valve 9, thereby retaining the coupling in place. The coupling is disconnected from the valve 9 by movement of the lever 15 in a direction to withdraw the valve-engaging devices 11, whereby the body 1 is re leased and may be slipped from the valve 9. F roni the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device whichI now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto. I Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is v An air valve connector comprising a body having a valx e receiving opening extending ing opening,-a'paeking secured within the valve receiving opening, a lever mounted upon the hollow stem, and valve engaging rods'mounted in the said transverse openings' and connected with the lever, said rods having their inner faces inclined and formed with longitudinally disposed fine ribs to correspond with the screw threads on the stem ofthe airvalve to which the connector is to be coupled. I I
Intestiin'ony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two'witne'sses.
AMOS-J. SCHERMERHORN.
