ARVID H. NERO, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE A RROW ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
' ELECTRIC-LAMB socKE'r.
Specification of Letters ma.
To all whom tit-may concern:
Be it known that I, ARV-ID H. NERO, a citizenof the United States of America, and residing at New Britain, in the county of -Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and Improved Electric- Lamp Socket, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric lamp sockets and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient device for locking a lamp in inserted position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 in which my form; Fig. 2
showing the operation of this locking device; Fig. 3 is a detached partial'section showing the elements of the locking device; Fig. 4 is a detached elevation of the shell terminal and locking plate of the socket; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the shell of a lamp socket showing a modified form of locking screw, the latter being shown detached from its boss.
The present invention may be applied to sockets of various types, but is here applied for the sake of illustration, to a key socket of ordinary type, comprising the usual cap 10 and shell ll'forming a casing through which projects the usual switch key 12. The insulating socket body 13 within the casing carries the screw shell 14 forming one of the terminals for the threaded base 15 of an incandescent lamp 16 which is screwed therein. An insulating lining 17 surrounds the screw shell 14 and insulates it from the shell 11 of the casing.
To prevent the unauthorized removal of a lamp from the socket after insertion, I form an aperture 18 in the screw shell IXiat a convenient point,-preferably in line below the I key 12, since the latter is always placed in accessible position,
manner a clamping plate 19 a portion of which is adapted to be projected through the aperture 18 in the screw shell and bear against the inserted lamp base. As here shown the clamping plate is riveted at its upper end 20 to the screw shell and its lower end is roughened at 21 to aflord abetter grip upon the lamp base. 'Any suitable means may be employed to force this clamping plate against the lamp base. The means here shown, comprise a and arrange upon the, socket in any suitable locking screw 22 carried by an internally threaded boss 23 mounted on the shell casin Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
11 in register with the aperture 18, and pro-- lamp it is of course only necessary to turn the screw outward thus releasing the pressure upon the plate 19, and permitting the lamp to be unscrewed. As a simple modification of this type of locking screw I have shown in Fig. 5 spindle 26, the head of which is provided with a cain face 27 bear ing against a cooperating cam face 28 on the inner end of the boss 29. The pitch of these cam faces is such that the head of the locking screw is advanced and retracted more rapidly than would be the case with screw 22 above described, unless the pitch of the thread of the latter were made unusually high. N 0 means, other than the in-' sulating lining 17 of the socket, is needed to prevent? the locking spindle from fallingam aware however, no one has hitherto arranged inside the lining a clamping plate or the like which is forced against the lamp base by pressure against the insulating lining, hus completely obviating the danger which results from contact with the electrically alive terminal of the lamp base.
I claim as my invention 1. An electric lamp socket comprising a metallic casing, an insulating lining therefor, an apertured terminal for alamp base within said lining. a clamping plate supported within said lining and having a portion lying in register with the aperture in the lamp'terminal, and locking means carried by the socket casing and bearing upon register I I I I 'withfla lampbase inserted in said terminal with the free end of said clampto force the latter through the terminal into engagement with to lock the latter against in register ing plate apertu'red the lamp base withdrawal.
-2. An electric shell terminal, an insulating lining interposed between said casing and terminal, and meansc'arried by saidcasing and bearing upon 'athe outer face of; said'lining but in with the 'free ends of said clamping tongue to force the latter into engagement and lock the same'against withdrawal.
Y 3. An electric .lampsocket comprisinganapertured screw-shell terminal, a clamping piece adapted to be advanced through the ape'rtu'rein said terminal into engagement with an inserted lamp base, a socket casing surrounding said terminal and means car- A ried by said casing in register with the aperv Coplen'o! thin patent, bt'flbtfliltl for lamp socket, having an apertured screw shell terminal for a lamp base, a clamping tongue extending into saidaperture, a socket casing surrounding said ture in said screw shell terminal and insulated from said clamping piece for forcing the latter into engagement with the lamp 'base to lock the latter against withdrawal.
4. An electric lamp socket comprising a screw shell terminal having an aperture in the side thereof, a clamping plate secured to said shell and having a portion in register with said aperture, a socket casing surrounding said screw shell, insulating tween said termlnal and casing, in combination with a locking screw carried by said casing in register with the aperture in the terminal and bearing upon the outer face of said insulating material but in register with the free end of the clamping five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
