' State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blade- -Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening blades, and has reference more particularly to a new and improved device for effecting the sharpening of the blades of safety razors and similar edged tools.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified device for sharpening safety razor blades and like tools in an easy and expeditious manner and without requiring any special skill on the part of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device wherein the sharpening effect will be even and uniform throughout the cutting edge, independently of any skill and care in the manipulation of the device on the part of the user.
These and other objects and advantages are attained by the invention, an approved mechanical embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherem Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of the complete device; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section, partly in elevation. through the hone block and its supporting frame and the blade holder; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan View, partly in horizontal section. of the hone block, frame and blade holder: Fig. his a fragmentary top plan view of one end portion of the hone block and its supporting frame. and Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the hone block and its supporting frame.
Referring to the drawing, designates as an entirety a hollow rectangular supporting frame that is provided at its four corners and on both sides with supporting legs 11. the ends of which latter are preferably tipped with rubber pads 12 or similar material to avoid scratching and marring of the supporting surface of the frame.
Itigidly supported within the rectangular frame 10 is a hone block 13 of suitable abrasive material, to one side of which is preferably secured a strapping pad 14 of leather. To rigidly support the hone block, the margins of the longitudinal side bars of the frame are bent or crimped in wardly over the longitudinal edges of the hone block 13, as clearly shown at 10' in Fig. 2; the working surfaces of the block 13 and stropping pad 14 (where the latter is employed) projecting safely above or beyond the inturned margins 10 of the supporting frame. Secured to or formed integral with the longitudinal side bars of the frame are a pair of trackways 15 that are depressed below the plane of the working surface of the sharpening element. cooperating with the structure thus far described isa blade holder. This latter, in the broad aspect of the invention, comprises a rod or spindle having means for clamping a razor blade, anti friction rollers freely rotatable on the spindle adapted to engage the trackways of the supporting frame of the sharpening element, and hand-grip extensions adapted to be grasped, one by each hand of the operator, whereby the blade may be traversed back and forth over the sharpening element with varying pressure thereon. The blade holder, in the construction herein illustrated, comprises the following parts. I
16 designates a flat intermediate blade supporting member on which may be formed ceptering studs 17 adapted to cooperate with the holes usually formed in safety razor blades, one of which, of the double edge variety, is shown at 18. At one end the blade supporting plate 16' is rigidly secured by a threaded end portion 19 to a handlemember 20. The opposite end of the blade supporting plate 16 also has a threaded connection with the reduced inner portion 21 of an arbor 22. on which latter is slidably mounted a tubular handle member 23. The arbor 22 terminates at its outer end in a head 24, and the arbor 22 is normally forced outwardly of the tubular handle member 23 by a coiled spring 25 confined between annular shoulders 26 and 27 on the arbor 22 and tubular handle member 23, respectively.
The inner ends of the handle members 20 and 23 are turned down to form journal bearings 28 and 29 for a pair of wheels 30 that are adapted to travel over the trackways 15 of the hone supporting frame, said maintained bf. the spring.
wheels being guided laterally by the vertical portions of the longitudinal side frame members on which the trackways are formed. so as to prevent any substantial canting or skewing of the blade holder during its reciprocating movements. The wheels 30 may be confined on their bearings by slightly upsetting the outer ends of the latter, or in any other Suitable manner.
