Application nled April 8, 191,3. Serial No. 759,778.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RITZ PAFFRATH, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Schmalkalden, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Folding Gridirons; and I t o hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a folding gridiron particularly adapted for Sportsmen and the like.
Some illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure l is a side elevation showing one form of my gridiron opened out, Fig. 2 a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 an endelevution of the same showing one of the folding legs, and Fig. 4 a detail view showing portions of one of the legs.
Referrin to Figs. 1 to 4, the gridiron consists o three sections a, b, c. As seen in Fig. 2 each section comprises the two side-plates d, d and two or more bars e. To stop the various sections a, b, c of the gridiron from being rotated too far when they are unfolded and fully laid out,
the side-plates d, d have lugs f, which fall into notches q in the adjacent side-plates.
When folding the sections of the gridiron together in the direction of the arrow k. care must he taken that the various bars of the grid do not prevent the ridiron from being compaetly closed. Wit this Object, I provide in the narrowest section a the slots z' extending from above and below to the middle of the side plates, and in the seeton Z the slots i, but only on the lower side; the widest section o contains none of such slots. When the section a is folded into the section b, the bars e in the latter enter into the slots z' on the lower side of the section a. The bars e in section b have slots 7c adjacent to the side-plates and extending to the middle of each bar, and consequently the side- (Ispica et thl patent may be obtained for plates d, d on section o can be completely folded into section b, the slots z' and lc which by pairs correspond to each other will then engage one in another. The sections a and b thus folded together are then folded into the' section c; the bars of the latter having somewhat wider slots 7c, and some of these bars of section c are then located in the lower slots z' in section b and others in the upper slots i in section a. In this manner the entire gridiron is compactly folded together. At each end of the gridiron there are two folding le s Z, which remain folded when it is desire to lay out the grid as shown in Fig. 2.
The outward movements of the two members m, 'o constituting a leg are limited in a suitable manner by stops o, p, which, as seen in Fig.4 4, may be formed by simply making cuts and bending over portions of the material forming the leg. In the illustrative embodiment the lower member is shown unfolded outward somewhat farther than the upper one.
I claim A foldin gridiron comprising in combination a p urality of grate-shaped rids pivotally connected at the ends thereo one to another, one of the side-plates of all the grids but one having a notch adjacent to the pivoted end thereof, and the adjacent end of each side-plate pivoted to a notched side-plate having a lug adapted to engage in the adjacent notch when the gridiron is folded out rectilinearly, the side-plates of all the grids but one having notches for receivin the notches of the cross bars of the grids 1n the folded position thereof, and the cross-bars of all the grids but one having notches for receiving the notches of the side-plates of the grids in the folded position thereof.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
