Application filed January 22 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE T.-LADD, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Tube Boilers, of which i1n provements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates'to certain improvements for the reception and segregation of solid impurities and insolu-, ble elements from the water fed into boilers, said improvements being especially applicable" to boilers of the vertical water tube ty e.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is'an end View of one of the drums of a 'Vertical Water tube boiler, a portion. being broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of .the drum, and Fig. 3- is a sectional detail View on an enlarged scale.
'I As is the usual practice in this type of boiler, the lower ends of a plurality of tubes 2 are secured in any suitable manner in openings in the drum 1, said tubes and drum together, with an upper drum forming a! complete boiler unit. Water is fed into the" drum 1 through one or more flanged nozzles 3, which are so arranged relative to one or more rows of tubes, that the ends of these tubes and the feed nozzles can be isolated from the other tubes 'by a box 4. By thus inclosing the lower ends of the tubes and the feed nozzles in a common chamber, the feed, water cannot mingle with the water in the boiler except by passing up through the tubes connected to' the chamber. In passing through the chamber and tubes the water is heated to a temperature sufficient to render most of the salts such as lime, magnesia, etc., insoluble. The water in the tubes connected with this chamber .is not materially agitated and although there will be a practicallycon stant upwardmovement of the water this movement is slow, and the solid-matter contained in the feed water including such as Specification of Letters Patent.

is formed by heating the water will'settle down into the chamber, and can be blown out through the nozzles 33, which are adapted to'be connected not only'to thefeed pipes but also to pipes for carrying away the sediment, etc. The removal of thesediment by blowing ofi is facilitated by arranging the nozzles 3011a level with the lower wall of the box 4, 5 clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In order to facilitate access to the ends of the tubes connecting the chamber formed by the box at and also to permit of the removal I of such sediment as cannot be discharged through the blow-0d, the box should be so attached to the inner wall of the drum that it can easily be detached or shifted. To this end one side preferably the lower side of the box is attached to one of the members of hinges 5, the other members of the hinges being secured to the wall of the drum as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The box is held in closed or operative position by any suitable'means, such for example as the clips 6, which are so attached to the drum that one end will project over a flange 7 along the side of the box. These clips may be so constructed and attached to the drum that by merely loosening the nuts on the bolts the clips can be turned out of engagement with the flange.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. The combination with a 'water tube boiler of a removable box arranged in one. of the drums to iuclose and isolate the-ends of a portion of the tubes connected to said drum and the feed or blow-01f nozzle.
2. The combination of a'water tube boiler of a hinged boxarranged within one of the dl'uzns to iii-close and. isolate the ends of a portion the tubes connected to said drum and the feed or blc-ia oii" nozzle, and removable means for holding the box in closed position.
