Be it known that 1, ALLEN H. DINQMAN, a citizen of tlieUnited States, and a resident et Allison Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Spark-Plug, of which the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to spark plugs used in connection with internal-combustion engines.
The object thereof is to pi'ovide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient pli1g \vhich is light in weight 'and which is moisture and oil proof.
I attain the above object by the structure illustrated in Jthe accompanying drawings forming a part ot the specification and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views and wherein- Figure 1 is a face elevation of a sparkplug embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation oli the saine; Fig. 3 is a plan view et the threaded member carrying the plug proper, whereby the same issecured; Fig. #l is a horizontal section on line 4 4, Fig. 1 Fig. 5 is an elevation of the casing with the cover removed; Fig. 6 is a face eleation of the cover for the casing; Fig. 7 is an elevation ot an insulating member; Fig. S is a section on line 8-8, Fig. 1; Fig. 9 is an enlarged `view ,1 of the lower end of the electrode; and li .v10 is a section on line 4-4, Fig. 1, showing a modified structure o the interior of the plug.
Referring to the drawings, 11 represents a shallow elongated casing having the shape orn a keystone, the ends of which are rounded. A cover 12 is fitted snugly into the casing and forms one tace of said casing, the other face being formed by the bottom of the casing, the edges 13 ofthe casing forming the sides thereof. Positioned in the casing is a dat, elongated electrode 14 to the lower end of which is clamped a platinum member 15 which is disposed transversely of said electrode with the end 16 thereoie perpendicular to the faces et the electrode 15. The electrode 14 and the platinum member 15 are spaced from the bottom of the casing and from the cover thereof by insulating members 1S which lit snugly into the casing and which are of substantially the saine contour as the cover 12. The ends 1G of the platinum member 15 are made to project through said insulating niembers18. The upper end 'of the electrode 14k is connected to a head 19 of a screw 20. The head 19 is set into a fibrous washer 21 which is received in an opening 22 formed in the cover 12. The edges of the opening are preferably raised, as shown at 23 in Fig. 8, so as to give a larger surface of contact between the washer and the sides forming the opening As shown in Fig. 8, the tapers toward the exterior of the casing so as to lock the washer therein when the casing is closed by the cover.
The thickness of the electrode and the insulating members is such that when the saine are placedv into the shallow casing 11 and the cover placed thereon, the outer face of the cover is below the edges 13; and the edge is then turned down by suitable means under high pressure thus hermetically sealing the casing at the edges (see Fig. Ll). The aperture 17 through which the ends 16 of the electrodeprojeet each, preferably, receives a drop of fused insulation enamel to prevent oil in the cylinder from working back between the layers of insulating material and producing short circuit therein. Itis self-evident that any other "fusible slag can be used in lieu of the enamel used for glazing. i
The herinetically closed casing is received in a keystone slot 24 provided in a threaded member Q5, with the lower end of the casing projecting below the threaded member, and the upper end remaining above the threaded member. The casing is secured to the threaded meinbei in any suitable way, such as brazing or welding. The screw 2O receives a fiber washer QG and a thumb nut Q7, whereby an electric conductor 28 may be connected to the screw and, therefore, to the electrode.
ln the modified structure shown in Fig. 10, the casing 11 has its interior enameled; and the inner surface of the cover 12 is also enameled. This insulates the inner surfaces of the casing, and the electrode fle', in
opening 22 the insulating quality of the casing, thus in suring-the insulation of the electrode from the casing.
From the above it will be seen that in inv spark-plug the insulation, .protecting the electrode from the casing in inelosed in a' hermetically sealed easing and is, therefore, not affected by the moisture of the atmos phere nor by the gases of the cylinder, as 20A -vents the gases from entering thecasing,
thebpenings 17 receive enamel which preas, previously described, and also prevents theloil from working therebetween. vThis structure,thereore, insures a permaneney to the spark-plug. Furthermore, the ends 16' of the electrode being disposed on each side of the casing give a large area of action and insure a positive spark in the gap formed between the ends 16 and the outer edges of the apertures 17.
Having thus described my invention, l

1. n a spark-plug,-an elongated shallow casing, an electrode in said casing; means insulating the electrode from the casing having apertures at the lower end thereoi` through which the electrode ends project; means insulated from the casing adapted to connect the conductor to the electrode; and means carrying the casing whereby the same can be secured.v
2. In a spark-plug,-an elongated, shallow casing; anelectrode in said casing; means sealed in the casing insulating the electrode from the casing, said casing having apertures in the faces at the lower end thereof, said electrode having terminals projecting through the apertures in the faces and from which thesame is separated by a spark gap; and a. binding post from the electrode at the casing, said f upper end of the casing and insulated there`- from.
3. ln a spark-plug,-a shallow, keystone shaped casing; anelectrode in said casing;
means sealed in the casing insulating the electrode therefrom, said casing hay;1 apertures in the faces at the narrower end thereof, said electrode having terminals jecting through the apertures in the'iaces and spaced from said apertures by a spark gap; a binding post for the electrode at the wider end of the easing and insulated 'there-- from; and means associated with the easingl whereby the same may be secure l.
4. ln a spark-plug,-a shallow, keystoneshaped casing rounded at the ends, said casing being enameled interiorly; anelectrode fin the easing; means sealed in the casing insulatinO` the electrode from the casing, said casing having apertures in the fac-es thereof` at the narrower end of the casing, said elec-V trede having terminals projecting tlirou h the apertures; a binding post associated 'with -the electrode at the wider end ot the casing and insulated therefrom; and means carrying the casing whereby the same can be secured.
5. ln a spark-plug,a shallow, keystoneshaped casing; an electrode in said casing; means sealed in the casing insulating the electrode from the casing, said casing haying apertures in the faces theieoi at the lower end, said electrode having terminalsv projecting through the apertures; said insulating means sealing the bottom of the apertures adjacent the electrodes; and meansv associated with the casing whereby the saine can be secured. l
n6. 1n a spark plug, akey-stone shaped casing enameled interiorly, an electrode in said casing, said electrode and casing having terminals separated by a spark gap, and `insulating means in the casing enveloping the electrode.
