RIBBON MECHANISM TYPE-WRITIN MACHIES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed .T une 15, 1912. Serial No. 703,772.
State of N ew York, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in fRibbon Mechanism for '.lype-lVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bi-clirome i'ibbon mechanism and makes provision for printing from ditferent zones of a ribbon, as, for instance, black and red, when a printing operation by depression of a so-called silent ykey is effected.
The invention is shown as applied to the organization disclosed in the patent of J. F. McBirney, No. 1,010,290, of November 28, 1911, and may therefore be considered, in a sense, as an improvement upon the construction disclosed in that patent.
The invention comprises in connection with ribbon mechanism of variable extent of movement, f an organization in which the ordinary printing lkeys are connected with the universal bar by permanent mechanical connections, and in which the silent or accent keys are connected by permanent mechanical connections, with transversely arranged means for operating the ribbon vibrator without actuating the escapement. The ribbon mechanisin is adapted to be adjusted to print from either the upper or lower Zone of the ribbon.
Inethe accompanying drawing: Figure 1I lis an elevation of the right hand side of the machine with the side plate removed and some parts in section: Figs. 2, 3 and 4, respectively, side elevations of the ribbon mechanism as seen at the right hand end of Fig. 1, the parts being shown in varying positions: and Fig. 5, a rear view showing the universal bar, its suspending frame and some parts carried thereby.
S0 far as the machine illustrated corresponds with that shown in the above inentioned patent of McBirney it will .not be de scribed. It is thought to be sufficient to describe in detail only those changes that constitute the present invention.
lTurning on the transverse shaft 1 are pendant arms 2, 3, located'respectively adjacent the sides of the machine. These arms areconnected intermediate their length by a cross 4 and between their ends e'tends the universal bar 5. Intermediate the pendant arms 2, 3, there is fixed on bars 4:l and a vertical plate 6, on the 'upper end of which j extending above the bar 4 is pivot-ed ay swinging pendant plate 7 recessed or cut faway at 8 to afford clearance for the bar 4.
The pivot bolt 9 of the arm 7 has 'Wound around it a spring 10 one end of which is engaged with the edge of the Xed plate 6.
and the other with the swinging arm 7, the reaction of the spring being such as to cause the arm adjacent its lower end to be held in contact with an adjustable screw stop 11 carried by a right-angular extension 6 ofl the fixed plate 6. The swinging 4plate 7 is oifset, as ,seen in Fig. 5, so that there is between it and the fixed plate 6 a substantial space 62. F iXed to the swing-v ing plate 7 by means of a clamp nut 1:2 is a bolt 13 that passes through the swinging plate and projects into or across the space between the plates 7 and 6. This bolt or pin is circular except that it is cut away or fiattened on one side.
Above the adjustable stop 11, the lplate 7 has a forwardly projecting part 7 adapted to be engaged by a wiper 14 that connects the transverse rock shaft 15 of the silent key devices and the shaft 16 around lwhich the silent key links 17 are hooked. As shown in the above mentioned McBirney patent the rock shaft 15 has its bearings in brackets 15 on the frame of the machine and has fixed to it a plurality of arms 14 which carry in their ends the transverse' rod v16. 'The rod 16 eX- tends onieither side of the longitudinal center of the machine, and may receive the hooked ends of a plurality of silent key links 17'. The arrn '14 disposed at the center of the machineis'herein calledl a wiper arm and actsl directly onthe projection`7. of the swinging plate 7. Instead of a transverse rod 16 (and eis-disclosed in the McBirney patent) there may be4 securedto` the rock shaft thel above mentioned wiper arm .and on'each side thereof'y as many. arms as are required for the silent keyl 'links-#olie forv each link.
