Specification of Letters Patent.

Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Brick Arches,-of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire brick arches of the kind which are installed' in fire boxes or boilers, and other like places, and designed to withstand the heat from and deflect the products of combustion.
The invention has for its object the construction and installation of a fire brick arch which can be put in old as well as new constructions; which can be installed by placing the tiles forming the same separately in position and "taken down by removal of said tile separately; and in case of the breaking of the elements of the arch can be repaired Without the removal of any considerable number of said elements. I
A further object is to obtain flexibility in the arch by providing means whereby horizontal and vertical movements of the elementsof-the arch are permitted.

The turning of the upper ends of said members provides means to engage said members F with the ratchet teeth 6 on members E; and the turning ofthe lower ends of said members provides means of engaging said members with the. under sides of the heads d of brick or tile 03. An adjustment of the members F on member E determines the vertical position, in the arch I); of the Member E is supported by the under side of the head 6 resting on the lower flange of the U-shaped pieces; and said under side, or face, of said head 6 curved to permit said head to rock on said flange. The incline desired in a given brick or tile is thus obtained. To insert the member al in place it is turned so that the longitudinal lines of bodies or heads 6 6 are at right angles with the side lines of the flanges on the U-shaped members, and said members E and F are then pushed or forced up between two of said U -shaped members, (which are placed in pairs). Said member d is then turned one quarter way around with heads e above and heads 6 below adjacent lower flanges of said U-shaped members. Heads 6 then support said member al and heads 6 prevent said member from being forced up.
The brick or tile supported by said member al is thereby held in its proper place in the arch, and can neither be forced above or drawn below its determined position. 'lihe proper incline of said brick or tile is obtainedby rocking the heads 6 on the flanges of the U-shaped members on' which they rest.
The suspending member 03 comprises the;
body member G provided with ratchet teeth 9; the elastic members H, bolt k, and the attaching member I. Attaching member I is provided with the hooked ends 2', 2', which are adapted to engage with the upper flange of an I l-beam, as is illustrated in Figs. 2, 4: and 9; and the upper ends of the elastic members H are turned out to rest on the sides of attaching members I when said elastic member is slid in between the parallel sides of said attaching member. The required incline of the brick or tile suspended on said member (2 to make said brick or tile fit in the arch, is obtained by slightly twisting attaching member 1!. Body member G is provided with a slot, corresponding,

The lower end of the body member G is provided with the head J, and is engageable with the head on the tile or brick which is suspended thereby; and said head J is sufficiently long to permit said brick or tile to extend beyond the li-beam C, so that the additional tile or brick K may be placed on the upper side of the tiles forming the row under said Ill-beam, to protect said li-beam' from "the heated products of combustion flowing thereby.

In a fire brick or tile arch, the, combination of tiles or fire bricks, supporting beams, suspending devices, means to attach said suspending devices to said supporting beams, and to said fire bricks or tiles, said suspending devices comprising elastic members and body members adjustably interposed between said supported tiles and said supporting beams, said body member providedv with a slot, and means engageable through said slot to secure said elastic and body members in an adjusted position.

In a fire brick or tile arch, the combination of tiles or fire bricks, suspending devices, supporting beams, and side walls, said suspending devices comprising elastic members and body. members, said elastic members attached to said tile and adjustably attached to said body members, and lugs on said body members, said lugs adapted to engage with said supporting beams,

A fire brick sprung arch suspended from supporting beams, and comprising a plurality of members arranged in a plurality of rows, and respectively provided with projections on the top sides thereof, and a corresponding plurality of suspend-- ing means respectively attached to said supporting beams and to a member of said arch, said supporting means respectively comprising an elastic member interposed between said arch members and said supporting beams, said elastic members adapted to engage 'said projections when said arch members are forced upward into said arch.
