Be it known that I, GERMAIN RoUssnL, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Broughton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylone-Gas Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in acetylene gas lamps and is de signed to provide a compactly arranged portable or pocket lamp that will generate its pwn gas and be self-contained in all particuars.
The invention consists essentially in certain combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a lamp constructed according to and involving the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the lamp. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the lamp of Fig. 1 on line 11. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view of the snap fastening between the water tank and the carbid tank. Fig. 5 is a face view of the fastening. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the water feed regulating device. Fig. 7 shows a portion of the gas pipe in section with a strainer therein. Fig. 8 is a plan view of one of the strainer disks.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as shown in the drawings I have illustrated a water feed type of generator and to provide for the separate compartments or vessels I utilize a sectional device comprising the water tank 1 having a closed top and water supply cap 2 through which the water may be supplied to the tank. The tank 1 is closed at its bottom of course, and the bottom 3 forms the top for the opentop carbid tank 4.
The device as a whole is elliptic in cross section, and the two tanks, one above the other, extend from end to end of the ellipse as shown in Fig. 1. To generate gas the water in the tank 1 is fed to the carbid holder or tank 4 through a water pipe 5 which is integral with or fixed to the underside of the upper open end of this pipe 5, a beveled edge opening or seat 6 is formed in the bottom of the tank 1, and in this seat the correspondingly beveled edge of a hollow plug or pipe 7 is adapted to co-act to regulate the passage of water from the water tank through the seat 6 and pipe 5 into the carbid holder.
At its upper end the hollow plug 7 is formed with external threads 8 and a forated knurled head 9, and by turning the knurled head the threads 8 may be turned in the threads 10 of an annular flange in the top of the tank 1, to regulate the passage of water to the carbid holder. stirring rod 11, with a handle 12, and a bent end 13 in the carbid holder may be turned to agitate the lumps of the carbid to prevent them massing together.
In Figs. t and 5 the spring fasteners for holding together the water tank and the carbid tank or holder are illustrated. A spring latch 14 is attached securely to the tank 1 and its lower end is formed as a hook 15 which is adapted to pass through a loop 16 riveted to the carbid holder and properly positioned to receive the latch. As many of these hooked latches may be utilized as is required to hold the two tanks securely in place and insure a joint between them that will prevent escape of gas as it is generated in the tank 4.
A gas pipe 17 leads from the tank 4 and conducts the generated gas to the burner 18 which is of usual or suitable type and is located in a reflecting chamber 19 in the front of the lamp. A mirror 20 or other reflector is located back of the lamp in said chamber and the front of the chamber is closed by a glass plate 21. This glass plate 21 is held in a slot 22 in the top 23 of the lamp closure and is held at the bottom by a catch or clamp 24 of usual or suitable type so that it may be released and lifted through the slot 22 in order to gain access to the interior of the reflecting chamber 19 to ignite the gas as it emerges from the burner 18. An igniter 25 of the steel milled wheel type which frictionally engages a flint, is located in operative proximity to the burner so that the gas may be ignited, and the usual disk 26 with its perforations and cotton strainer 27 are provided in the gas pipe to strain the generated gasi A stirrer or A pivoted handle 28 is attached to the tank 1 and this may be swung out of the way when not in use, as shown in Fig. 2, a bent portion 29 being used in the handle to engage a recess 30 in the tank wall to hold the handle in inoperative position.
It will be understood that the two tanks are held together by the locking spring catches or hooks and that the tank 1 has a projecting top portion 23 while the tank a has a projecting bottom portion 31 between which, projecting portions the reflecting chamber is located, and the glass plate 21 which closes this chamber is rounded to conform to the outline of the device.
A gasket 32 may be utilized between the two beveled edges of the adjoining tanks (see Fig. 4) to insure a gas tight joint, and
other minor details of construction, which have not been illustrated, will of course beembodied in the actual physically constructed device.
From the above description taken in con nection with the drawings it is obvious that I have provided a combination of elements that furnish a device that may be manipulated with facility, maintained with economy, and operated with efliciency; and which will prove highly desirable for performing the functions for which it is best suited.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A portable gas lamp of elliptical cross section comprising in combination a water tank with a slotted projecting top and a lower carbid tank with a projecting bottom and means for detachably fastening said parts together, a movable plate glass front in the slotted top resting on the bottom forming a reflecting chamber, a gas burner in the reflecting chamber, and a reflector at the rear of the burner.
