Specication o Letters etent.

Application filed. February 21, 191e. Serial No. 820,173.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Peron REiLLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Spindle-Tester, of which the and exact description.
twisting machines, and its object is to provide a new and improved spindle tester arranged to permit an operator to quickly and accurately ascertain the eiliciency or noneiiiciency of the spinning and twister spindles vwithout requiring stopping of the niachine or removal of the spools or boooins' from the spindles.
In order to accomplish the desired result,`
use is made of a spring-pressed 1oar slidaole in a handle provided with a scale on which indicates a pointer held on the said bar, the outer end of the bar having a shoe adapted. to be engaged with the peripheral 4lace of a running spindle to gradually overcome the force of the drivin belt on pressing the ing the spindle to a stop, the amount of pressure indicated by the pointer on the said scale denoting the running eiiiciency of the spindle. 4 A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specication, in which similar c aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation o the spindle tester as applied, the sectionbeing on the line l-l of Fig.' 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. l
in a suitably constructed hollow handle A is mounted to slide aar B terminatin@ at its outer end in a recessed head B. in which is secured a shoe C, of cork, hard rubber or other suitable material. The outer face of the shoe C is preferably segmental to tit the peripheral face G of the base of a spindle D, driven in the usual manner oy4 a pulley E and belt F from a suitable source of power. l
The barB is pressed on by a spring G held in the hollow handle Ato normally hold the bar B in outermost'position. @n the loar B is secured 'a pointer H which vextends through a slot A formed lengthwise in the handle A, and
The invention relates to spinning and the bobbin or spool from.
the said pointer Trl indicates on a scale l arranged exteriorly on the handie A adjacent the slot A@ As indicated in the drawings, the Jforward portion of the bar B is preferably square and mounted to slide in a correspondingly-shaped vhearing A2 held on the forward end oit' the handle A, while the rear portion B2 oi the bar B' is preferably round and is mounted to slide in a bearing A3 at the rear end of the handle A. The rear end of the spring G aloutsagainst the bearing s while the forward end of the spring rests against the pointer H to normally hold the bar B in outermost position.
ln using the device, the operator takes hold of the handle A and engages the slice C with the peripheral face of the spindle '9, as plainly indicated in the drawings, and then the operator presses the handle e.. toward the spindle thus causing the handle to slide on the bar B against the tension of the spring G. The operator continues the 'movement of the handle A toward the spindle D until thev shoe C exerts suihcient pressure on the spindle E so that the latter comes to a standstill, and at this time the operator notes the position of the pointer il on the scale l. rhe scalev l indicates the pressure at which the spindle comes to a stop, thus enabling the operator to determine the efficiency of the running spindle relatively to the work to oe performed in winding up the yarn or threads on the cololoin or spool held on the said spindle. if the spindle pressure, it is necessary" to rectify the driving of the spindle correspondingly so' that the spindle can only be stopped by the spindie tester when the predetermined pressure is reached. 'I
At will be noticed that hy the use of this spindle tester it is not necessary to stop the spinning or twisting machine or to remove the spindle while testing the saine.
Having thus described rey invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ?atent:
l. fl.
