ROBERT lVlIEMlVLINGER, OF NUREMBEBG, GERMANY.
'rnRMEnTIuG-B NG.
Toall whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonnu'r MEMMINGER, a cltizen of the German Empire, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have in-' vented certain new and'useful Improvements vin Fermenting-Bungs, ofrwhich the follow- .ing is a specification.
My invention :relates to improvements in fermenting-brings, as used on beer barrels and the like and of the class where thegases to be discharged escape through a weighted hollow tube or rod, slidably provided in a I ,case and carrying a discharge-valve which opens by meeting with adetent OISiZOPyPIO- vided withinthe road of the rod of the said valve and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide for a sharper transmission of fluctuating pressuresupon-the valve-rod;
second, to dispense withtheusc of the weighing-down springs heretofore required and, third, to permit of a more accurate adjustment of the apparatus and at the same time of a certain relief to the same.
j l attain my objectsbly the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth and described and as illustrated on the drawing herewith in which Figure 1 is a partial front elevation of and a partial longitudinal section through my'improveddeviceand Fig. 2 is substan tially a transverse section on the line A-B if of Fig. 1.
nection with the barrel.
My apparatus comprlses a case 1 closed at the bottom by a hollow bottom-piece 2 and on 'top by a'cover 1, the said bottom-piece having a coupling stud 3 or the like for con- It contains an adjustable tube or hollow rod 7 having attached thereto a permanent weight 8 and an expansible hollow body 5, Fig. 1 showing by way of example an india-rubber bag, communicating with the hollow rod 7. The said body 5 is in turn communicating by a suitable passage, as a hollow screw 6, with the bottom-piece 2, the fermentation gases coming from the barrel through the coupling stud 3 and-traveling into the bottompiece 2 of the apparatus whence they get through the passage 6 into the eXpansible body 5 which they inflate, a portion of the gases entering the tube 7 held down by the aforesaidpermanent weight 8. The upper end of the said tube or hollow rod 7 has a head-piece 9 containing a discharge-valve Specification of Letters Patent.

10, the valve-rod of the same being passed through the top of .thelsaid head-piece. This-valve-rod I prefer toprovide on top with an adjustable flanged piece 11 against which a pair of swinging levers 12, 12', seated on top of the headpiece 9, may bear and press the valve-cone. against its seat. At a suitable, that isat such relative distance above the top-end of the valve-rod as .is wi thin correspondence of its stroke and. W1l3l111l the road of its said top-end, a stop or detent 13 'is provided which, when the valve is raised by=the gas in the body 5 and the valve-rod strikes against the said detent,
overcoming the action of the weights, causes an opening .of the discharge-valve.
To permit the adjustment offthe apparatus for the several pressures under which the gases are to be blown off I provide a regulator made. up of a gear of connecting rods 14, 15, the gear rod 14 engaging the tubeor hollow'r'od 7. The rod-gear may be actuated by any suitable device, but I prefer a lever arrangement .as shown on the drawing which comprises'a double-armed lever swinging on a fixed point and weighted. The double lever I prefer to be formed by. bending it round, thus, that there are two arms 17, 17- of unequal lengths, the
shorter one being attached to the pivot 118,
secured in a fixed place, as the frame of the apparatus andxat the same time, by means :of a :member :16, to-the rod-gear 15.,aforementioned, while the other arm 17' carries -a sliding weight 19. This weight I prefer to be adjustable on the said arm right or left to the swinging point of the shorter arm 17, as indicated by and on the drawing, and, accordingly, although the apparatus is controlled by the permanent weight 8 hereinabove'mentioned, it may at pleasure be either additionally charged or it may be relieved and "thus made to blow under either a stronger or weaker pressure than that which would be permitted by the action of the weight 8. The height of the stroke of the rods remaining uniform throughout, an adjustment of the stop or detent 18 is not required.
It will be understood from the foregoing and by an examination of the drawing that the principal features distinguishing my invention from the types known heretofore, especially those where thehollow rod is and so adjustable that the apparatus may passed through a piston or through a reversible india-rubber bag, are, first, the employment of a hollow body, closed in itself,
expansible and adapted to receive and partially hold any gases conducted into the apparatus and, second, by a special adjusting weight, in addition to a permanent weight,
' barrels, .it may be used with advantage Wherever accumulating gases may be drawn oil and it is further evident that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the class described the combination with a weighted sliding tube carrying a discharge valve, of a closed eXpansible body communicating with the '2. In an apparatus of the class described the combination with a Weighted sliding tube carrying a discharge-valve, of an indiarubber bag communicating with the said sliding tube. l 3. In an apparatusof the class described the combination of aisliding'tube, a weight attached thereto, means for the admission I Y of gases, a closed eXpansible body communi- .nation therewith of a controlling the said rod eating with the said tube and admission means, and a discharge-valve on top of the said tube. a
ed to receive gases conducted into the same and a discharge-valve for the said gases attached'to the said rod or tube, the combi permanent weight and of an adjustable weight adapted to charge additionally or reduce the action of the said permanent weight.
1 5. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a sliding tube, a weight attached thereto, means for the admission of gases, an india-rubber bag communicating with the said tube and admission means and a discharge-valve on top of the said tube.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, having a hollow slidable rod, adapted to receive gases conducted into the same and a discharge-valve for the said gases attached to the said rod, the combination therewith of a permanent weight attached to the said rod, a double-armed lever turning about a fixed point, an intermediary gear between the said lever and hollow rod and a weight adjustable on the said lever.
7. In an apparatus of the class described having a hollow slidable rod adapted to receive gases conducted into the same and a discharge-valve for the said gases attached to the said red, the combination therewith of a permanent weight attached to the said rod, a lever, an intermediary gear between the said lever and hollow rod, the said lever being bent round, forming two arms of unequal lengths, the shorter of the said arms being turnable about .a fixed point and adapted to operate the said gear, and a weight adjustably attached to the longer of the said arms and changeable in position to the aforesaid fixed point, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
