Description

I flniii iatzt Staal can- Letters Patentv No. 112,960, dated March 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN' BROOMS.
The Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'lt may concern:
y Beit known that I, GHARLESL. REID, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State'ofl Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the construction and operation of the 'same, .reference be` ling had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication, and -to the letters and figures of refer' ence marked thereon.'-
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of front view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
My invention has relation to brooms, and consists in the construction of the clamps, whereby the straws of the broom are held together at the top.A
The letter A of the drawing represents the handle,
and l B the brush 'part of my broom.
C C' represent clamps, by which the 4straws of the broom are held together at the top, and by which the handle is secured to the upper pfalt of the broom.'
AThe clamp O is slotted, as shown ou the drawing, for the passage of the heads of keys a a a. These small keys are usually secured to the plate G by spreading the ends; then they are passed through the straw, and the slots in'the plate C and the expanded. ends d d are turned, securingY the straw. l
To hold\the handle more rigidly in position the concave projections b"b are employed. They extendY upl ward from the plates C and C', and the handle passes between them and is secured to them by means of the pin c, which is fastened in the manner of a rivet .l
by heading it on both sides, or with a screw-thread, bolt, and nut. v
In manufacturing these brooms I usually dip the 'upper portionV into hot pitch or any other adhesive substance, for the purpose of holding the straws more firmly together, when the clamps are applied and tightened vby means of the pins a c a. The rupper ends of the straws are brought on a level, and the lower end of thev handle is adj usted against them, thus .increasing its stability.
' I am aware that brooms have been constructed with a metallic head, through which bolts have been passed, and made secure by nuts, screws, and washers, but such vmanufacture is found to be accompanied with great expense. I lay no claim to brooms thus'constructed; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'.Ihe broom-clamps herein described, consisting of4 the clamping-plates C O', having the con'cave projections b la, secured by keys a a' a" passing through theslots in the clamp C' and holes in the clamp G,
ysubstantially as shown and described.
In'testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribedrmy namein the presence of two .Wit-
nesses.
CHARLES L. REID.
