Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LOWE, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
OPERATING CUT-OFF VALVES 0F STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,294, dated July 11, 1854.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LOWE, o-f the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Cut-Offs for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the mode of constructing a double rock shaft, and other mechanical parts in combination, to eect an improved method of cutting olf steam in steam engines.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The plan accompanying this specification is the detailed parts of a steam engine, showing the steam chest, with steam and side pipes attached and valve arrangements, also the improvements that I claim.
I make my exhaust rock shaft, A, hollow, and attach the eccentric hoo-k, arm or plate, B, to the same to work the catches, F, and the exhaust valves, E. The steam rock shaft,
C, I pass through the hollow rock shaft, A, to connect with the steam valves, D, thus making the two shafts independent of each other, although they both move by the action of one eccentric. The arm or plate, B, is constructed to receive the catches, F, to connect with the p-late, G, o-n the shaft, C, for the purpose of giving `motion to the same. The disengaging of the plate, G, on the shaft, C, which communicates with the steam valves, D, is effected by the disengaging of the catches, F, which is caused by the action and movement of the governor rod, H, or an adjustable lever combined with an eX- tension movement of cross arms, I, or other device, whereby I disconnect the catches, F, from the plate, G, which is attached to the shaft, C, thus effecting the cutting off the steam by the steam valves, D.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
The double rock shaft, one passing throughV the other, the outer shaft to work the catches and exhaust valves, and the inner shaft actuated by the catches to open and close the valves to effect the cutting off the steam, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth and described, in combination with the other parts of the mechanical movements, or their equivalents, as
herein described.
WILLIAM LOWE. Witnesses:
