CITABLES E HANSTJN, OE PROVIDFNCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CIGARETTE-CASE.
Application filed April 9, 1914. erial No. 880,782.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette cases, and relates more particularly to the general type of cases of this character in which the opening movement of the top automatically projects the tips of the cigarettes above the open end of the ease.-
The primary object of the invention is to provide improved means for effecting ejection of the cigarettes and also replacement thereof within the case without breaking, or otherwise damaging the cigarette tips.
Further, the invention aims to simplify the manner of connecting the closure or top of the case, to thereby allow the closure to be more readily and easily operated.
Still further, the invention aimsto pro vide improved means for limiting the outward movement of the ejector.
Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figfl. Fig. 4c is a top plan view,
showing the top or cover in open position.
The caseproper, designated 1 in the drawings, is divided by a partition 2, into two compartments, the partition being rigidly secured to the case and having its lower end spaced from the bottom of the case to provide a stop 3. The ejector consists of a member 4 of U-shape, the legs of which extend in sliding engagement with the inner faces of the ends of the case, and the bottom of which is adapted to seat on the bottom oft-he case and to have its upper face engage and support the lower ends of the cigarettes The case preferably has its ends curved in crosssection and the partition has similar curved faces in order to conformably engage the cigarettes.
The upper or free ends 5 of the legs of the ejector are offset inwardly and are pivoted by meansof pins 6 or the like to arms "I that are rigidly connected to the top or cl'*;-"-:re 8. It is particularly to be noted that ice top 8 is absolutely free of any and aii connection with the body cf the case, and supported solely by the pivotal pins 6 which enables Specification oi Lettersijgatent.
I ejector slidable in Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
the top to be easily and quickly moved from the closed position shown in Figs. '11 and 2, to the open position depicted in Figs. '3 and 4. The top 8 is formed with finger grips 9 'on its ends which engage over .the outer the extent of the outward movement of the ejector, when the latter engages with the stop 3 as depicted in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In operation, it will be noted that there is no possibility of the top 8 interfering with the upper projecting tips of the cigarettes either in the opening or closing movement of the top, since the top is permitted to swing free and clear ofthe cigarette tips,
and in addition the cover top will exert a direct downward pressure on the cigarette tips should the latter be raised up from the bottom of the ejector on which the opposit ends or tips of the cigarettes seat, thus avoiding fraying of theedges of the tips which is common with tops which are not permitted to swing so as to be brought di rectly over the projecting tips, before 1- gaging the latter.
From Fig. 3 of the drawings, it' wnl be noted that the arms 7 are permitted to swing so as to occupy positions at direct right angles to the plane in which the case proper lies, whichis important in that the cigarettes can thus be easily and quickly removed from and placed in the case when the latter being replenished. without interference from the top.
It will further be observed that since the cover or top is free of connection with the case, same may be moved at either side thereof toward and away from the case, thus enabling the cigarettes to be easily extracted from either side of the case.
Having thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent j 1. In 'a' cigarette case, a case proper, case, a top pivotaiiy connected to the ejcc. said top having ion gitudinal front and rear shoulders to engage the inner Iaces of the front and rear walls of the case to hold the top against lateral movement; "with relation to the case, meahs to engage the ejector to limit the extent of outmxi movement thereof, and a pair of finger i at the ends of the top engaged ever we out-er faces of the ends of the case.
In a cigarette case, a case proper, a U- shaped ejector slidable in the case, a Sta-- 10 't-ionary partition connected to the case proper and having its lower end spaced from she bottom of the case proper to engage the bet-mm. of the ejector to limit the extent of oetw ard movement of said ejector. said partition being arranged substantially central 15 of the length of the ejector so as to have its opgosite side faces provide supports for the upper ends of the cigarettes to hold the latter upright with respect to the ejector, and a top pivotally connected to the ejector. 2a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES E. HANSEN.
