Description

G. D. WATKINS. PASTE APPLYING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED run, 1914.

PASTE-APPLYING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed. February 16, 1914. Serial No. 819,047.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. WATKINS a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste- Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for applying paste or the like to a surface.
The object of the present invention resides in the provision of a device adapted to contain blacking paste and provided wlth means at its mouth whereby the paste may be readily and properly applied to the surface of a shoe without soiling the hands of the operator and without exposing of any paste other than that which is actually applied.
A further object resides in the provision of a such a device for applying paste which is of such simple design and so constructed that it may be used as the normal container or receptacle in which the paste is sold, sald device from its simplicity being capable of very economical manufacture.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation, and arrangements of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims herewith appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a face view of my device looking at one side thereof, Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section, Fig. 4: is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an end view.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the body portion of the device which is adapted to contain the paste comprises a tubular member 5 formed of flexible material. To effectually close one end of this tubular portion, it is crimped as at 6, and provided with a binding wire 7.
The mouth of the tubular member 5 is normally held in. a flattened and partially closed position, and to accomplish this, portions of the tubular member are bent inwardly as at 8, and the other portions of said mouth rest at their edges on said inwardly bent portions. To facilitate applying the paste to a shoe, a pair of rubber plates 9 are provided and disposed on the faces of the flattened mouth portion and have their forward ends extending therepast. These rubber plates are secured on the body portion by plates 10, said plates l0v also bracing the rubber plates up to the point at which they pass the mouth of the body portion. To normally hold the mouth portion of the device in closed position, a binding wire 11 is secured around the body portion and around the plates 10.
The device is given a neat appearance by the provision of a flexible covering 12 which extends from the rear end of the body portion to the mouth thereof.
In operation, when the body portion is normally filled with paste, the body portion is squeezed to eject a small amount of paste from the mouth of said body portion and as the mouth is rubbed on the shoe, this paste, especially through the medium of the extended ends of the rubber plates 9, is properly spread over the shoe. It is observed that only as much paste as is needed is pressed through the mouth and therefore there is no drying of the paste, as none is exposed except that which is used. It is seen that the binding wire 11 normally holds the mouth in a closed position. Passage of paste through the mouth is efl'ected to some extent by a compression of the rubber plates.
From the foregoing it is seen that there has been provided an exceedingly simple construction which may be used to contain blacking or other paste and which when the paste has been exhausted therefrom may be thrown away, as the device may be manufactured at a practically nominal cost due to its extreme simplicity, it being understood that if desired the cover 12 may be done away with or may be restricted to covering the end portions of the body portion. This modification of the covering is obvious and apparent to anyone and therefore it is not illustrated in the drawings.
It is understood that various minor changes and modifications within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to Without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising the combination With a flexible body portion closed at one end, of a pair of flexible plates secured to the other end portion of the body and extending forwardly thereof, brace plates for said flexible plates secured to the-upper faces of said flexible plates and to the body portion and terminating flush With the adjacent end portion of the body, and means normally holding said portion in a closed position.
2. A device of the class described com- Oopies of this patent maybe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the prising a flexible body portion closed at one end, the other end of the body portion being flattened, resilient plates secured on each side of said flattened end and extending out- Wardly thereof, brace plates disposed on the outer faces of the resilient plates and terminating flush with the end of the body, and a binding member disposed around said end of the body and around the brace plates.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
