Description

j ANsnL nacer', or NEW lrolia, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 112,915, dated March 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CENTER-PQINT TRIMMINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters'Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may conce/rn lBe :it known that LANSEL RECHT, of the city, county, and State of New' York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Center-Point Trimming, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had lto the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in Figure 1 represents a face Vview of my improved trimming;
Figure 2, a side or edge view of the same;- T Figure 3, a longitudinal section taken through the center ofthe trimming;
Figure 4, a face view of the trimming during the process of manufacture; and
Figure 5, a side or edge view of the same. Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts. 4
My invention consists in a trimming which presents a novel formation of a succession of folds of pointed form, having their points centrally disposed and lying' in the same direction relatively to the length of the trimming, and said folds being retained in place by rows of 'stitching rundown or alongeitber side of the trimming. l
y Referring to the accompanying drawing, .the trimming there shown is made by first subjecting the strip at regular distances, in succession, to the action of a -pair of dies, male and female, to puff out and form the creases in the requisite directions, for the subsequent production of the folds by the combined and timely 'operations of a plaiting-knife and presser.
To this end, I am engaged in constructing a ma.
chine which, Vwhile it is not necessary here to descbe in `detail, and which it isV my intention to make the subject of a separate application 'for Letters Patent, I will here briey refer to, by Way of showing vhow my improved trimming is or may be made, although not restricting myself in this applicationto any precise g neans.
Said machine embraces among its elements/a. male and female die, between which the strip A is fed intermittently, in direction of the arrow x,'by the operation of suitable feeding mechanism. These dies are, in general contour, of pyramidal shape, with projections and grooves on their sides, and otherwise appropriately formed, so that, when brought together, they will puh" out or crinkle the trimming, as clearly represented Y thereabout,with an imaginary line connecting the forward'extremities of the front diagonal creases e e, the direction in which the several creases are made favoring such folding action, and causing the reverse diagonal creases which lie in advance-to fall, as it were, or
lie over the corresponding reverse diagonal creases in g the.rear,vin doing which theel-eases d d are turned inward, asshcwn by dotted lines, and a center-point fold, B, is made.
A presser then comes down on the fold to flatten it,
and, as a succession of similar folds are thus made by or in concert with a timely operation of the presser and suitable feeding mechanism, the machine is made to run a row of stitching, j; on both sides of the folds,
or along opposite edges of the trimming to hold the folds in place.
' What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, iss A trimming, presenting ay succession of central points, formed by gathering in the edges in the manner described, at regular intervals, and folded and stitched, in the manner substantially as shown, without cutting the edges of the material. v
ANSEL HEOHT.
