Be it known that I, RnINHoLD KRUMMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
.The main object of this invention is, to provide in a temporary binder or loose leaf holder, an improved adjusting mechanism.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A. structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention, is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Fig. IIIis a detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. II. Fig. IV is a detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 4- 1 of Fig. II. Fig. V is a detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. III. Fig. VI is a detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 66 of Fig. IV.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the'sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
The structure illustrated, is of a post type, the binding members 1 being provided with telescoping posts 2 and 3. The binding members comprise plates 4 having inturned flanges 5 at their rear edges. These flanges 5 are provided with longitudinal slots 6. The covers 7 are secured to the binding members 1 by the flexible hinges 8. The back plate or piece 9 is provided with up turned flanges 10 at its end which embrace the end of the binding members to support them against longitudinal movement. The plates 4 of the binding members have inturned flanges 11 at their ends which slidably engage the back piece flanges 10, as shown in Figs. II and III. An adjusting plate 12 having longitudinal slots 13 therein, is mounted upon the block-like supports 14 carried by the back plate. These supports are provided with integral rivets 15 as a convenient means for securing them to the back plate. The supports 1% are shouldered at 16 to engage the slots 18, see Fig. V, so that the plate is supported for longitudinal adjustment. A pair of levers 17 are mount ed upon the supports 14 by means of the pivots 18. The adjusting plate is retained on the supports by these levers. See Fig. V. The levers 17 are provided with headed pins or studs 19 which engage the longitudinal slots 6 in the clamping members. The levers are provided with pins 20 which project rearwardly therefrom to engage the transverse slots 21 in the adjusting plate 12. The adjusting plate is actuated by a screw 22 mounted in the bearing 23 on the back plate and engaging the nut 21 on the adjusting plate 12. The end of the screw is adapted to receive a key, the flange 10 opposite the screw being provided with an opening 24 for the key. With the parts thus arranged when the screw is turned, the adjusting plate is shifted longitudinally and through its pin and slot connection with the levers, the levers are swung. Owing to the pin and slot connections for the levers to the clamping members, and the clamping members being supported against longitudinal movement, the clamping members are moved laterally out and in, see the dotted position of the parts in Fig. III.
The pivot screws 18 for the cross pieces are shouldered at 26 so that they cannot be tightened up sufiiciently to bind the levers. The heads of the screws are countersunk into the levers so that the flanges of the binding members close over the heads of the screws when the binder is retracted.
The adjusting bar is transversely ribbed at 27 to bear against the flanges of the binding members to assist in supporting the plate. This arrangement of parts, the levers resting upon the adjusting plate and the binding members resting upon levers, provides a very compact structure and the parts coact in supporting each other.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a simple and effective embodiment.
I am aware that my invention is capable of considerable variation in structural details Without departing from my invention and I desire to be understood as claiming the same specifically in the form illustrated, as well as broadly Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: L In a temporary binder, the combination with the binding members provided with longitudinally slotted inturned flanges at their rear edges; a back plate having forwardly projecting flanges at its ends embracing the ends of said binding members, an adjusting plate having central longitudinal slots and transverse slots therein, supports on said back plate shoudered to engage the longitudinal slots of said adjusting plate whereby said plate is su iported for longitudinal movement, an adjusting screw for said adjusting plate mounted on said back plate, levers pivotally mounted on said supports, said levers being disposed between said adjusting plate and said clamping member flanges, said adjusting plate being retained on said supports by said levers, headed studs on said levers engaging the longitudinal slots of said binding member flanges, said binding members being supported and retained by said studs, and rearwardly projecting pins on said levers engaging said transverse slots in said adjusting plate, such slots and pins being on cpposite sides of the pivots of the levers.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination with the binding members provided screw for said adjusting plate mounted on said back plate, levers pivotally mounted on said supports above said adjusting plate, studs on said levers engaging the longitudinal slots of said binding member flanges, said binding members being arranged on said levers supported and retained by said studs, and rearwardly projecting pins on said levers engaging the said transverse slots in said adjusting plate, said slots and pins being on opposite sides of the pivots or said levers.
3. In a temporary binder, the combination of the longitudinally slotted binding members, a back. piece, an adjusting plate having longitudinal slots and transverse slots therein, supports on said back piece engaging the longitudinal slots of said adjusting plate whereby said plate is supported for longitudinal movement, an adjusting screw for said adjusting plate mounted on said back piece, levers pivotally mounted on said supports, studs on said levers engaging thelongitudinal slots of said binding members, and pins on said levers engaging said transverse slots in said adjusting plate, such slots and pins being on opposite sides of the pivots of the levers.
a. In a temporary binder, the combination of the lon itudinally slotted binding members, a back piece, an adjusting member having transverse slots therein mounted on said back piece for longitudinal adjustment, means for adjusting said adjusting member, levers pivotally mounted on said back piece, pins on said levers engaging the longitudinal slots of said binding members, and pins on said levers engaging the transverse slots in said adjusting member, said last mentioned slots and pins being on opposite sides of the pivots of the levers.
