SUSPENSION DEVICE FOR TROLLEY-WIRES AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. DENNEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension Devices for Trolley-\Vires and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in suspension devices for trolley wires and the like, and the primary object of the same is to provide an improved device of this character for suspending a trolley or conductor wire from'a messenger wire and which will be of such construction as to greatly facilitate and expedite the work of placing the same in position and of hanging the trolley or conductor wire and which at the same time is capable of such adjustment as is necessary to properly position the wire.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character having interchange able parts.
A further object is to provide an improved yieldable device of this character for suspending the trolley from a messenger wire and which may be secured to the messenger wire against longitudinal displacement with respect thereto, and at the same time form a yieldable support for the trolley wire whereby the latter will be permitted to rise and fall as thetrolley advances and passes under the hanger.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating an em bodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing a pair of devices constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the preferred form of suspension device. Fig. 3 is a detail View, partly in section, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of a modified form of messenger wire clip. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of Fig. 4. the modified form of trolley or conductor wire clamp shown in Fig. 6 with a portion of the suspension member attached thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings and in the exemplification of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the numeral 10 designates the messenger wire and 11 the trolley or conductor wire, which is suspended by these improved suspension devices or hangers arranged at suitable intervals along the messenger wire.
In the preferred form of the invention the suspension devices comprise a messenger wire clip 12 which clip comprises a body portion having an aperture 13 therethrough which is preferably screw-threaded and is provided with two oppositely disposed hookshaped members L1, 15, which are arranged on opposite sides of the aperture 13 and in different planes with the hooks opening in opposite directions so that the extremity of each of the hooks will stand in the same plane as the body portion of the other hook.
The trolley or conductor wire clamp comprises two members 16, 17, each of which is provided with a plurality of projecting lugs 18, extending laterally beyond the interior of the members, which lugs are provided with apertures adapted to aline with each other for the reception of a pivot pin or bolt 19. One extremity of a single suspension member 20 is adapted to stand between the jaws 16, 17 of the trolley wire clamp and the pivot pin or bolt 19 is adapted to pass through the lower extremity of the suspension member whereby the trolley wire clamp will be secured to and supported by the suspension member. The other extremity of the suspension member 20 is screw-threaded as. at 21 and is adapted to pass through the threaded aperture 13 in the messenger wire clip 12 so as to engage the messenger wire 10 between the hook- shaped portions 141 and 15 to offset the messenger wire between the hooks as at 22 for securing the clip on the messenger wire and against longitudinal displacement with respect thereto. The end of the suspension member to which is connected the trolley wire clamp is also screw threaded as at 23 and a wedge-shaped member 24%, preferably in the form of a sleeve having a conical extremity and an angular base 25 surrounds the extremity of the suspension member 20 adjacent the trolley wire clamp andhas threaded engagement therethe clamping edges may be varied by the movement of the wedge-shaped member. The clamping jaws are preferably provided with inclined faces 26 which are adapted to cotiperate with the conical portion of thewedge-shaped member.
If desired, a suitable lock nut 27 may be provided which is also threaded upon the extension of the suspension member 20 and cooperates with the wedge-shaped member 24 whereby the latter may be locked or secured in its adjusted position against accidental displacement due to vibration caused by the passing of the trolley wheel under the hanger or from any other cause.
When it is desired to secure the suspension devices in position, the messenger wire clip 12 is placed in engagement therewith so that the wire will pass into the space between the hook-shaped members 14 and 15, after which the clip may be axially rotated to cause the hooks to engage over the messenger wire. The suspension member 20 .may be then adjusted so as to cause the extremity thereof to engage the messenger wire to clamp the suspension device in position. The lock nut 27 may be then adjusted on the suspension member 20 away from the wedge-shaped member 24, after which the wedge-shaped member itself may be adjusted upon the suspension member away from the pivot of the trolley wire clamp, which adjustment will permit the clamping edges to be separated for the insertion of the trolley or conductor wire 11 therebetween, after which the wedge-shaped member may be then again adjusted on the suspension member 20, in the opposite direction so as to cause the conical member to pass between the extremity of the jaws l6 and 17 to move the clamping edges into engagement with the trolley or conducting wire for securing the latter in position. When thus adjusted the locking nut or collar 27 may be moved into engagement with the wedge-shaped member for preventing accidental displacement. The angular base or portion 25 of the wedge-shaped member serves as means whereby a wrench or tool may be applied to the conical member to assist in adjusting the same.
In the exemplification of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the messenger wire clip preferably comprises a single member 28 which is bent into a substantially U-shape which is placed over the messenger wire 10 so that the extremities of the U-shaped member will depend below the messenger wire. The upper extremity 29 of the suspension member 20 in this exemplification is flattened, as shown, and is inserted between the jaws of the U-shaped member 28, after which the parts may be secured together in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a bolt 30, the head 31 of which engages the outer face of one of the jaws of the U-shaped member so that the extremity of the bolt will project beyond the opposite jaw of the U-shaped member, which extremity is preferably screw-threaded for the reception of a nut 32.
The extremity 29 of the suspension member 20 is of a thickness to permit the clip to be drawn tightly against the messenger wire 10 when the nut 32 is adjusted on the bolt 30, thereby securing the suspension device against longitudinal displacement with respect to the wire.
In the exemplification of the invention shown in Figs. (3 and 7, the suspension member preferably comprises a plurality of sections 33, 34, 35. The section 35 projects between the jaws 26, 27, of the trolley wire clamp and is connected thereto by means of the pivot pin or bolt 19 of the trolley wire clamp. The free extremity of the section 35 is screw-threaded as at 36. The section of the suspension member preferably comprises a strip of any suitable flat material which may be of any desired length. The section 34 of the suspension member is pivotally connected as at 37 to one extremity of the section 33 preferably on a pivot arranged transversely to the pivot of the trolley wire clamp. The section 34 is provided with a wedge-shaped extremity 38 preferably conical in configuration and similar in construction to the wedge-shaped portion 24 and an angular periphery 39 beyond the wedgeshaped extremity 38. This section 34 is provided with a threaded recess 40 arranged below the pivot 37 and which opens outwardly through the free extremity of the section 34 and is adapted to receive the threaded extremity 36 of the section 35. The free end of the section 33 is adapted to be bent over the messenger wire 10 so that the extremity 41 will rest against the section 33 below the messenger wire. A suitable fastening device such as a bolt 42 or the like may be provided for securing or clamping the extremity of the section 33 to the messenger wire to prevent longitudinal displacement of the suspension device with respect to the messenger wire and which fastening device passes through the body portion of the section 33 and the extremity 41 thereof. In applying this form of the invention, the section 3-1: may be adjusted with respect to the pivot 19 of the trolley wire clamp by axially rotating the section 34 or the section 35 and when the section 34 has assumed a proper position with respect to the pivot pin or bolt 19, the clamping edges may be separated to permit the insertion of the trolley or conductor wire, after which the section 34 may be axially rotated so as to adjust the same on the section toward the pivot pin or bolt 19 to cause the gripping edges to clamp the trolley wire. The messenger wire clip at the free extremity of the section 83 may be opened by adjusting the extremity 41 to per-- mit the clip to be hooked over the messenger wire, after which the fastening device 42 may be placed in position and adjusted to cause the clip to grip the messenger wire. With this form of the invention a yieldable suspension device is provided in that the trolley wire clamp is pivotally connected to the section 33 of the suspension member which will allow the clamp to move about its pivot when the trolley passes the suspension device and when the trolley wire rises and falls through the upward pressure of the trolley, as the trolley usually sags between the clamps.
Obviously the modified form of messenger wire clips shown in Figs. 4 and 5 may be applied equally as well to either of the forms of suspension members.
With this improved construction it will be apparent that the parts are interchangeable in that a suspension member of any desired length may be provided to meet the existing requirements.

What is claimed as new is- In a device of the character described, the combination of a one piece suspension member, a pair of cooperating jaws between which one end of the member projects, a pivot pin connecting the jaws and passing through one end of the suspension member to prevent the relative rotation of said member, said end being provided with threads, a wedge-shaped member threaded upon and rotatable on the suspension member, said suspension member projecting through the wedge-shaped member, a lock nut supported by and movable upon the suspension member for locking the suspension and wedgeshaped member against relative movement, and a messenger wire engaging clip mounted on the suspension member at the free end thereof.
