ADJUSTABLE DRAFT-HAMES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES M. HUDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blanchester, in the bounty of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Draft-Hames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hame construction and particularly to means for the attachment of the draft or tug link to the hame in different positions; and its object is to produce a device of this character that shall be simple, inexpensive and durable.

To this end, my invention consists in a connecting device to be attached to hames, embodying upper and lower end-posts, a bolt or staple adapted to be passed through the upper end and engaging in the lower and an intervening shield formed to seat and engage upon the staple and end-posts the shield being formed with rudimentary circumferential hollows and intervening projections which hold the link to a selected position which may be changed at will.

My invention is illustrated in the drawings hereto attached and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figs. 2 and 3, opposite end elevations of my device complete and attached as in use; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the shield detached.

Referring now to the drawings, A desiginates the hame, B designates my connection device as a whole; and D designates the tuglinkin this case a U-shaped loop with fiat terminals adapted to engage at both sides of a trace and be secured thereto by cross bolts or rivets (not shown).

The connection device 13 is made up of a bolt 7), supported by end posts b 5 provided at their upper ends with eyes to receive the bolt which is passed through the former and threaded into the latter while the head of the bolt contacts outwardly against the former; and an intervening shield, C, carried partly upon the bolt 1) and partly upon the end-posts, b b, as shown.

which the longitudinal groove 0 which receives the bolt 1), and the vertical endgrooves 0 which enable it to seat upon and between the posts Z), 6 together with the rudimentary circumferential groovings 0 for the loop or tug-link D, are fully shown. The end posts Z), N, are extended through the hame A and secured by riveting their extreme ends.

The relation of the link D when engaged, is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. To move the link D to or from any position to another, the bolt or staple is unscrewed and withdrawn, and the shield C disengaged sufficiently to enable the change to be made, when the parts are again put together. The shield C not only forms a seat for the tug link D which may be adjusted to different draft positions, but takes up all wear of draft use on the bolt 1), and distributes the pulling stress equally over the entire length of the bolt 72. The lower extensions of the posts 6 b pass through a metal plate 6 resting upon the hame, which assists in holding the parts rigidly in proper relation. At one end and side the plate is extended into a ring 6 for the usual purposes of convemence.

There is thus formed a device extremely durable, and of great resisting power against heavy draft, having at the same time a simplicity of construction and operation in service as well as capacity of adjusting the line of draft to the animal that answers the conditions hereinbefore stated.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:

1. A draft connection for hames comprising two end posts adapted to be fixed to the hames, a bolt extending between said posts and secured thereto, and an intervening shield between the bolt and hames, said shield being grooved along one side to receive said bolt and having channeled ends forming seats for the end posts.
