JAMES TOWILL ASHTON KNIGHT, OF LANGPORT, ENGLAND.
BINDER FOR- LOOSE-LEAF BOOKS.
Application filed May 16, 1914.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES TOWILL Asn- TON KNIGHT, of Marlborough Buildings, Bowstreet, Langport, in the county of Somerset, England, merchant, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Binders for Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binders and loose leaf books of the prongless or pillarless type in which the leaves are gripped between side plates or longitudinal members pivoted to a back plate.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved loose leaf book of this type.
A loose leaf book or binder made in accordance with this invention is characterized in that the side plates each project beyond the front and back faces of the back plate, and in that wedge shaped members are dis posed between guides and operated by a right and left handed screw for the purpose of rocking the side plates on their pivots so that when the edges of the side plates are moved toward each other the papers or other material placed between them are gripped and securely held.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a front view of one form of mechanism adapt ed for use in a loose leaf book or binder made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a cross section. Fig. 5 is a front view of a modified construction. Fig. 6 is a rear view. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 8 is a cross section.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, a is the back plate, 6 and 0 are side plates; in hollow ribs formed in the back plate a are fixed transverse bolts d e, the ends of which penetrate the side plates 1) and 0. f f are nuts which keep the plates in position but permit the side plates to be rocked inwardly on the front side of the mechanism, while the operating mechanism at the rear prevents them from rocking outwardly beyond a parallel position. The side plates are provided with guide plates 9 g which may be fixed or hinged to the rear of the side plates, said. guide plates each having two edges inclined at an obtuse angle to one another. Between the guide plates are disposed wedge shaped members h h. These wedge members are provided with grooves adapted to engage Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Serial No. 839,031.
the edges of the guide plates. is a right and left handed screwed rod mounted on the rear side of the back plate in bearings k k, and passing through apertures in lugs m m on the wedge members. 1?. n are nuts pivotally mounted on the wedge members, 0 0 are stops. The screwed rod is provided with a squared end p. q q are springs adapted to press the rear edges of the side plates inwardly. r r are eyes of hinges adapted for use with corresponding eyes on a cover for securing the mechanism to a cover, by means of a hinge pin not shown. A false bottom not shown may be provided for covering the mechanism and may be secured in position by the bolts 6 and nuts The back plate is turned up at the ends 8 s to form a stop to the leaves.
Referring to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, the side plates 6 and c are hinged to the back plate by hinge pins t t and the guide plates g g are hinged by pins 24 u. The guide plates are formed with slots 42 '1) and each plate carries headed pins to 'w, engaging in the slots of the otherplate, which permit the guide plates to ride over one another thus allowing the side plates 1) and 0 to rock on hinge-pins t t in such a manner that the front edges approach or move away from each other to grip or release the contents of the binder. The plates 9 g are offset as at m m. The screwed rod may be fitted to work between the upper and lower guide plates and in such case the plates 9 g are thickened as at y to insure the slots '0 12 being engaged closely by the pins '10 11).
In use the loose leaves of a magazine, or other bound or loose material are placed edgewise between the front portions of the side plates, the screwed rod is then turned so as to travel the Wedges toward each other along the guide plates and so force the front edges of the side plates together to grip the leaves or material and hold them in position. When it is desired to remove a loose sheet or the bound material as the case may be the screw is turned in the opposite direction.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A loose leaf book or binder comprising a back plate, side plates pivoted to the back plate and projecting each side of the back plate, means for rocking the side plates so that their edges can be moved toward one another to grip and hold the papers or other material placed between the said edges and away from one another to releaseasaid 7papers or material.
2. A loose leaf book or binder comprising a back plate, side plates pivoted to the back plate and projecting each side of the back plate, guide plates on saidside plates andfat the rear of the back plate, said guide plates having edges inclined to one another, wedge shaped members disposed between the guide Copies ot this ipatent may 11c obtained-$01 plates, nuts on said wedge shaped members,
a right and left handed screw at the rear back plate engaging with the said nuts.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my'name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
