' TOOL-HANDLE connncrron.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application filed September 4, 1914. Serial No. 860,246.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that ,I, Bonner E. ALcoRN, a
citizen of the -United States, residing at Lake Village, in the county of Chicot and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handle Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tool handle connections and has relation more particularly to an improvement on my Patent, No. 1,105,599, dated August 4,191+L; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character whereby an effective connection is afforded possessing a maximum degree of strength and durability.
The inventionconsists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tool handle connection whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the samewith reference to the accompanying drawings, where1n Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a tan}: and its concomitant parts constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view'in perspective of an extremity of a handle, with a ferrule constructed in accordance with my present invention applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is av fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through a handle construction as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a handle provided in one extremity with the axially disposed socket or recess 2 in which is adapted to be projected the tang 3,herein disclosed as constituting'a part of the shank 4 of a hoe blade, although I wish to .be particularly understood that. it
is not my desire to limit myself as to any particular style of implement.- I also find 1t of advantage in order to maintain the tang 3 against axial rotation to have a portion thereof, as indicated at 6, angular in cross section and serving 'ina manner and for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains. The shank 4, as herein disclosed, is provided with an'annular shouder 10 adapted to overlie the adjacent extremity of the handle 1- and terminating adjacent the periphery thereof, said shoulder .serving to limit the extent of penetration of the tang 3. Disposed around the adjacent extremity of the handle 1 is the ferrule 7 of a length substantially equal to the length of the tang and having, its outer extremity projecting beyond theend of the handle, said projected extremities or portions 8 being split longitudinally, as at 9, so that such projected portion of the ferrule may be readily caused to snugly incase the annular shoulder 10 whereby the tang 3 is effectively maintained against outward longitudinal movement which would tend to cause a separation between the implement and the handle. I In order to assure an effective engagement between the projected portion of the ferrule and the annular shoulder 10, I find it of advantage to have the forward or outer face of the shoulder rounded, as at 11. I have also found that it is particularly desirable to slit the projected portion of the ferrule as hereinbefore set forth, as this arrangement effectually prevents such projected portion from buckling when disposed around the annular shoulder of the shank.
Projecting rearwardly from the ferrule 7 is a pair of spaced and substantially parallel arms 12 adapted to overlie andcontact with the adjacent portion of the handle 1 and provided with alined openings 14 through which are disposed the rivets 15 affording a means common to both of the arms and directed through the handle 1 for holding the ferrule 7 against displacement. From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a tool handle connection constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim: v
A device of the character described including in combination with a handle a shank provided with a tang inserted within the end portion of the handle and having an annular shoulder abutting the end face of the handle in which the tang is directed and terminating adjacent the periphery thereof, and a ferrule of substantially the same length as the tang surrounding the I ROBERT E.
