ALBERT D. TILYOU, OF NORWICH, -ASSIGNOR T0 CORNELIUS A. CHURCH, OF. NEW BERLN. NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 112,864, dated March 21, 187-1.
IM PR OVEMENT IN STUMP-EXTRACTOR'S.'
The Schedule referred to ln these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
certain Improvements in a Lever for the use of Stumplxtractors, Aof' which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Invention. A
The rst part of my invention relates to the ap' plication of a lever to the stump to be raised or extracted, as an auxiliary for sturnpextractors, which lever may be of a single stick of wood or a truss-braced leverwith wond and iron, as shown in the drawing; the truss-,braced lever, however, will probably be used; the object of *his part of my invention being to remove/the stump-extractor at a proper distance from the stump to avoid standing on 'the roots of the stump, thereby saving ,power and facilitating the operation; also, the truss-bracing of the lever is to secure strength and avoid weight.
The second part of my invention relates to the eyeA or chain-holder for connecting and holding the chain, when hitched tothe stump, with the lever, when in operation.
The third part of my invention relates to the combination of the. several parts as applied to the stump and operated with a stump-extractor, substantially as` and for the purposes set forth.
Description of the Accompanying Drawings. l
Figure l is a perspective view of my lever, as applied to the stump to be extracted, embodying my invention. i
vFigure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of band and eye or chain-holder.
Figure 4 is a view of form of' one eye and chain, showing application of the saine.
General 'Description A, figs. 1 and 2, is the lever, of wood, supported and strengthened with the wood truss-braces B and the I iron rods H, running through the upper ends of the braces B B, down through band C and lever A, lower ends of braces B B, sitting in a step in the 'lever A, secured with bolts, as at a a.
C, figs. l and 2, is a band or strap of iron, which passes partially around the lever A, near its center, perforated with holes to admit the rods H to pass through the. lever A, to which the eyes E E, of iron, are connected, for holding the chain F.
D, figs. 1 and 2, is a staple, to which the chainor hook of the stump-extractor is attached for lifting' or extracting the stump. y
E is an eyeof peculiar 'shape and form, which is a substitute for a hook, and retains the chain to the lever when in operation. Y
G is a'. block of woodv rrnly secured to the under sidevof thel lever A, to prevent the lever A from slipping over the stump, and assists in pushing the stump when lifting the saine with the lever A.l l
H are iron rods for holdingthe braces B B and-lever A together.
E, iig. 4is an eye or chain-holder, and F is a chain. The advantage of this eye is, the chain can be easily passed through the larger'part of the eye as far as desired, the link of thc chain then being dropped into the narrow part in an upright or vertical position', while those at each side have a horizon- 4 tal-or reverse position, and, the breadth of the link` being greater than the width of the eye or space, causes the chain to be firmly secured in position when in operation.
Claim. f
I claim as my invention- The combination and the application of the lever A, as strengthened by the truss-braces B B and rods 1i, and block G, and hand C, with eyes E E and chain attached, operated with the power-or stumpextractor applied at the staplel D, substantially as and lfor the purposes hcreinbefore set forth.
- Y ALBERT D. TILYOU.
