Description

fren srnfrns PATENT ernten.
GEORGE CLAU'SING, OF POTSMOUTH, OHIO, .AYSSINOR 'IO THE VULOAN BOX TOE ROCESS COMPANY, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO;
SHOE-LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 26, 1914. Serial No. 821,168.
To dil whom 'it may concern,
Be it known that I, GEORGE CLAUSING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, Scioto county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Lasts, ot' which the following is a. full, clear, and exact descri tion, such es will enable others skilled in t tart to which it appertains to make and use e same, reference being had to the accompan e ing drawings, forming part of this specilication, in .which-- Figure'l is a longitudinal sectional view through my improvedlast. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on line 2*?, of Fig.- l.
This invention relates to :i new and useful improvement in shoe lasts, the object being to construct a last which is simple, cheap, and one which con be broken and removed from the shoe. The last is provided with a hinge and one of the hinged members cooperates with a spring in such o. manner that the parts of the last are normally held in operative position, the hinge member and spring being so constructed that the heel and toe members of the last are locked against accidentel displacement.
In the drawings l indicates the heel member of the last and 2 the toe member, these members being suitably shaped and `provided with openings at their contiguous faces.
3 indicates a tube inserted in en opening in 'the toe `member and held therein byt means of n cross pin 4. The outer end o this tube is slotted to receive the pintle-end oi a hinge member 5, Iitted in the opening of the heel member of the last :md heldin position by a cross pin 6.
7 is the pintle which passes through registered openings in thc tube und hinged member 5.
The hinged member 5 has an extension 5 at its outer end which extension coperates with a bull or plunger S'pressed there- .in the tot nui-mbexo the last. This eX- position of the .parts requires exertion of ...some considerable pressure in swinging the Patented Feb. 16, 19,15. t
ever, it can be arranged to hold the last in its broken position.
In speaking of the extension 5, the shape of whose working face which coperates with the spring-pressed ball as constituting a lock for the hinged members of the last, it is of course understood that this so-called lock merely prevents accidental displacement of the hist members by requiring a greater initial pressure to swing said members on the hinged pintle than is necessary to continue the movement after the lostl thereon to hold them in their nornml for closed position, said spring-pressed member being located above the pintle of the hinged elements.
2. In a shoe last the combination with heel :1nd toe members, of :i tubo. secured in one of said members und provided with :i slot its outer cud, n pintle member secured in tuo other last-member and havingr its outer end arranged in vthe slot of the tube and provided with a pro'ection, the pintle passing through the slotted end of thc tube and snd hinge member, and a spring ypressed element loczitcd above thc tube imd cooperating with said extension.
In testimony whereof I hereunto iflix my signature iu the presence of two witnesses, this 9th day of February, 1914. A
GEORGE CLAUSING. l/Vitncsscs:
