UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. MCGROUABY AND MILFORD S. VAN DRESAR, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA; SAID VAN DRESAR ASSIGNOR TO SAID MOGROUARY.
SMOKE-CONSUMER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed September 14, 1910.
To aid whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD J. Mo- GROUARY and MILFORD S. VAN DRESAR, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in, the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification. I
()ur invention relates to improvements in smoke consumers for locomotives, its object being particularly to provide means for causing a more complete consumption of the products of combustion than is obtalned 1n the ordinary locomotive.
To this end our invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective conventional view of a locomotive partly broken away containing our improved features of invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the smoke stack; Fig. 3 is a similar section through the fire box; and Fig. 4 is a section on line mw of F 1g. 2.
In the drawings A represents a locomotive, B the fire box, and 3 the boiler tubes. A wall 1 extends from the front plate 5 of the boiler downwardly and forwardly toward the front end of the locomotive, being formed at its free end with a deflector plate 5 and an upwardly extending partition wall 6 of openwork material.
7 represents a nozzle stand through which the exhaust steam passes from the cylinders to a petticoat pipe arranged above the same, the pipe 8 being arranged in alinement with an upper pipe section 9 opening into the smoke stack 10.
In carrying out our invention we surround the pipe 9 with a hood l1 interspaced from the pipe 5 and of somewhat larger diameter than the pipe 8, the lower edge 12 of the hood being outwardly flared. The upper end of the space between the pipe 9 and hood ll communicates by means of pipes 13, upon opposite sides, with selected ones of the boiler tubes 8.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Serial No. 581,969.
In order to produce a forced draft downwardly through the pipes 13 we provide a blast nozzle 1% directed downwardly into the upper end of the pipes 13 and connected by a pipe 15 with the rear portion 16 of the boiler, the pipe 15 being provided with a controlling valve 17.
In operation, the products of combustion from the fire box will pass through the boiler tubes and underneath the wall 4 and plate 5 and through the screen 6, thence passing through the pipe 9 to the smoke stack. In the usual manner the exhaust steam from the cylinders pass through the pipes 8 and 9 creating a forced draft. As the products of combustion pass toward the pipe 9 a very material portion will pass into the space between the pipe 9 and hood 11 and from thence through the pipes 13 and connected boiler tubes back to the fire box. In passing through the fire. box this second time a large portion of the products of com bustion which were not at first consumed will be consumed, thus materially lessening the amount of smoke or unconsumed products of combustion ejected through the smoke stack. Where desired, as where the engine is at rest and no steam being ejected from the cylinders through the conduit 7, the valve 17 may be opened to eject steam through the blowers 14: into the pipes 13, making a forced draft through said pipes to assist in carrying the products of combustion therethrough back to the fire box. It will be understood that our invention is employed in cooperation with the ordinary forced draft appliances of a locomotive.
WVe claim as our invention:
In combination with a locomotive tubular boiler, a fire boX and smoke stack, a downwardly directed plate located in front of the boiler and extending downwardly from the front boiler head, then forwardly in spaced relation with the bottom of the locomotive smoke box, the exhaust nozzle of the locomotive projecting through said plate, a hood arranged below the smoke stack, a pipe section within said hood and coaxial therewith, said pipe section at its upper end being connected with the hood and its lower end spaced to constitute an open bottomed hood and pipe, pipes leading from the uptures in presence of two Witnesses.
per portion of the space between the hood EDWARD J. MGGROUARY. and inner pipe section to selected ones of the MILFORD VAN boiler 'tubes and blast noziles dischaiging Witnessesz into the mouths of the last named pipes at H. S. JOHNSON, t e u per en o sa d h od- SM H- Coplea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent,
