To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRovnR EZRA CLEVE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seats, of which the follmving is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in seats.
My improved seat is particularly applicable to and is especially designed by me as a seat for folding carriages such as is shown in my application for Letters Patent filed August 30, 1909, Serial No. 515,206, of which application this is a division, although certain features are adapted for use in other relations.
The main object of this invention is to provide a seat structure having an improved back which is light in weight and at the same time is strong and durable and attractive in appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The structure described constitutes one effective embodiment of my invention.
Other embodiments would be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an effective and preferred embodiment of the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a folding carriage structure such as is illustrated in my application for patent referred to, embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail rear view of the structure appearing in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 2. In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the running gear frame of a collapsible carriage. 2 the handles which are pivoted to the frame at 3 to be folded forwardly thereon.
The wheel supports 1 are mounted in hang-' ers 5 on the running gear frame, the wheels not being illustrated. On these supports are cam members 6 with which the levers 7 coact in folding or collapsing the wheel supports. The levers 7, one only of which is shown, are pivoted at 8 on the running gear frame and their upper ends are connected by the links 9 to the handle 2. The links 9 are also adapted to serve as side bars for the seat 10. The seat 10 is supported at its forward end by the bracket 11 and at its rear end by the coiled springs 12 arranged on the cross piece 13 of the frame. These parts are illustrated in detail in my application-for patent above referred to.
The back 14 preferably consists of a board-like body portion 15 with a front covering 16 and a rear covering 17. The front covering being provided with a suitable padding or filling 18. The edges of the covering are brought together on the edge of the body and secured by means of the binding 19 which is U-shaped in cross section to receive the edges of the body 15 with the covering thereon. This binding is of metal and serves not only to secure the covering to the body, but alsoto'reinforc'e the body so that it-may be formed of thin material such as thin Wood or paper board and be effectively supported by the binding. The binding is arranged to extend across the top of the back and down each side thereof.
1 preferably prevent the spreading of the binding and'inainta'in it firmly in position by means of the strap 20 which is arranged across the back and secured to the binding by the engaging hooked ends 21 through the rear edges of the binding. (See Fig. 3.) The binding also serves as a means for attaching the back to the seat. This preferably consists of the means described in my application for patent referred to, sothat the back is automatically collapsed and erected upon the collapsing and erecting of the carriage.
This mechanism as shown consists of the supporting members 22 which are secured to the seat to project upwardly at each side thereof, and provided with pins 23 with which the segments 24 on the back are adapted to engage. The members 22 are slotted at 25 to receive the pivots 26 on the back. The back is connected to the lever 7 by means of the link 27 and thelever 28 which is pivoted at 23 to the member 22 and connected at its upper end to the back by a slip connection, the lever 28 being slotted at 30 to receive the pin 31 on the back. The link 27 is connected to the lever 28 through a slip connection consisting of a pin 32 on the lever 28 and a slot 33 in the link. The seat is preferably provided with sides 9, flexible sides being shown, the same being connected at their upper edges to the side bars or links 9 and their forward edges to the levers 7.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in the form in which I have embodied them in practice. I am aware, however, that they may be considerably varied in structural details, but as these variations will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, I do not attempt to illustrateor describe them here.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a seat, the combination of a back comprising a board-like body portion, a covering therefor, the edges of said covering being arranged at the edges of said board, a metal binding for the top and side edges of said body, said binding being U-sha ped in cross section to embrace the edges of said body and covering whereby said covering is secured and the body reinforced and sup ported, a metal strap arranged across the rear side of said seat engaging with the rear edges of said binding to reinfprce and secure the same, and means for supporting said back comprising supporting members secured to said binding.
2. In a seat, the combination of a back comprising a board-like body portion, a covering therefor, the edges of said covering being arranged at the edges of said board,
a metal binding for the top and side edges of said body, said binding being U-shaped in cross section to embrace the edges of said body and covering whereby said covering is secured and the body reinforced and supported, and means for supporting said back comprising members secured to said binding.
3. In a seat, the combination of a back comprising a board-like body portion, a yoke-shaped -metal binding for the said body, said binding being U-shaped in cross section to embrace the edges of said body whereby the body is reinforced and sup ported, a metal strap secured across the rear side of said back engaged with the rear edges of said binding to reinforce the back, and means for pivotally mounting said back comprising members secured to said binding at its lower ends.
4. A seat back comprising a board-like body portion, a coveringtherefor, the edges of said covering being arranged at the edges of said body, a yoke-shaped metal binding for the top and side edges of said body, said binding being U-shaped in cross section to embrace the edges of said body and covering whereby said covering 'is secured and said body is braced and supported, and a metal strap arranged across the rear side of said back engaged with the rear edges of said binding whereby the binding is secured and the back reinforced and supported.
5. A seat back comprising a board-like body portion, a covering therefor, the edges of said covering being arranged at the edges of said board, and a yoke-shaped metal binding for the top and side edges of said body, said binding being U-shaped in cross section to embrace the edges of said body andcovering whereby said covering is secured and said body reinforced and supported.
