Specication oi' Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application tiled March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,338.
T0 1U/whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DATH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate 5 of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in.. Underfranres fory RailwayCars, of which the following is a full.y clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings` forming a part of this Specification.
My invention relates to improvement in' underframes for railway-cars.
One object of my invention is to provide a strong underframe for railway cars, and relates ,more particularly to the center-sills thereof.
A further object is to provide a centersill construction that may be used as a reinforcing backbone for cars having wooden center-sills.
In the' drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1is a plan view of a portion of railway car and center-sills embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side eleration of one of said sills partly in longitudinal section online 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a crosssection taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeralsfaces of the wooden sills 6 6; the saidmetalsills preferably comprising Hat plates extending below the lower face `of the 'woodencenter-sills, the wooden center-sills resting upon the upper face 13 of the bodybolster 14, the metal sills 12 being provided with notches 15 15 underneath to receive the body-bolster transversely therein. At their ends the metal sills 12 are notched as' indicated at the numeral 16 in Fig. 2 of the drawings to extend under the end-sill and buffer-block. Throughout their length the metal center-sills are provided with the channel plate 17, 4riveted at its flanges .18-18 to the metal center-sills l2 .by thefiivets 19-19. Each metal centersill 12 is provided with short supporting,
rests underneath the adjacent wooden sill 6 on both sides of the bolsters. Each metal center-sill is provided at its outer face with an angle-iron 2l, extending longitudinally thereof, the vertical Harige 25 of said angleirons bein riveted to the adjacent metal sill 12, an the horizontal flange thereof is riveted at intervals to tie-plates 26-26 by means of the rivets 27-27. In front of the holsters, in preferable construction one broad tie-plate 26 is provided extending from one metal sill to the other, and engaging at its rear edge 28 the front edge 29 of the lower forward fiange of the body bolster. A tie-plate 26 is also provided immediately back of the body-bolster, the 'front edge 30 of which engages against the ster, and being forwardly downwardly extended at a preferably sharp angle to the lower edge of the metal sill to which it is secured, and each angle-iron tie-piece is rearwardly downwardly extended to the lower edge of the metal sill upon which it is mounted, each of said angle-irons bein se-.
cured to its appropriate sill by the rivets 34-34. The metal sills 12.*12 are secured to the wooden. sills 6-*6 b bolts 35-35.
It will be apparent that the structure herein described is one of great strength and rigidity, and that the saine may be readily employed as a unitary structure in connection with cars having Wooden center-sill by lifting the car-body from the bolster and placing the backbone structure described `in position between the wooden center-sill securing the same thereto, and placing the body-holsters in the slots inA the metal sills provided therefor.
I claim 1. In an underfraine for railway cars, the combination with wooden center-sills, of metal plate center-sills secured to the inner sides of. the wooden sills and extending from end to end of the car, a channel mounted between and secured to the inner sides of said metal sills and extending from end to end of the car and angles along the lower edg'es of said metal sills.
2. In an underframe for railway cars, in combination, wooden centebsills, metal center-sills secured thereto and depending therefrom, said metal center-sills being provided with transverse slots to receive a bodybolster, angle-irons secured to the outer faces of the metal center-sills and engaging the under faces of the Wooden center-sills, angle-irons secured to the outer lower faces of the metal center-sills, and a plurality of tie-plates connecting said last mentioned angle-irons. i
3. In an underframe for railway cars, in combination, wooden center-sills, metal ce11- ter-sills secured thereto and depending therefrom, a body-bolster, a channel-plate, angle-irons and tie-plates, the channel plate being secured to the metal center-sills along their upper edges and the angle irons to the inner faces thereof, said angle irons passing over the body bolster, and the metal centersills being provided with transverse slots. to receive the body-bolster, the tie-plates being looped over the body-bolster and secured to the metal center-sills. i
l. ln an underfrarne for railway cars, in combination, wooden center-sills, metal center-sills secured thereto and depending therefrom, a body-bolster, a channel-plate and tie-plates, the channel-plate being secured to the metal center-sills along'` their upper edges, the metal center-sills being provided with transverse slots to receive the body-bolster, the tie-plates being looped over thev body-bolster and secured 'to the metal center-sills, and angle irons secured to the outer faces of the metal center-sills and engaging the lower edges of the wooden center-sills.
5. In an underframe for railway ears, in 'f muibination, wooden centersills, yretal center-sills secured thereto and depending therefrom, a body bolster, a channel-plate and tie-plates, the channel plate being secured to the metal center-sills along their upper edges, the metal center-sills being messes combination, Wooden center-sills and metal center-sills secured thereto and depending therefrom, body-holsters and transverse slots 'in the under edges of themetal center-sills to receive the body-holsters, tie-loopsl Secured to the metal centers'sills 'and extending over the body-holsters, a channellplate secured be'- tween the metal center-sills at their upper edges, -angle-irons between the body-bol sters secured to the outer faces of the metal center'sills and engaging the lower edges of the wooden center-sills, angle-irons secured to the outer lower faces of the metal centersills and a plurality of tie-platesl joining said angle-irons.
' Inv an underfranie for railway ears, in coi- "iination, wooden center-sills and metal cenlerfsills secured thereto and depending therefrom, body-holsters' and transverse slotsin the under edges of the metal cen ter-sills to receive the body-holsters. tieloops secured to the metal centersills and v extending over the body-bolster, a channelplate secured betweenvthe metal center-sills at their upper edges, angle-irons between the body-holsters secured to the outer faces `of the metal center-sills and engaging the lower edges ofthe wooden center-sills. angle-irons secured to the outer lower 'faces of the metal center-sills and a plurality of tieplates joining said angle-irons, one of said tie-plates engaging the forward lower flange of the body-bolster, and the other of said \tieplates engaging the rear lower flange of the body-bolster.
