This invention relates to fire screens or] guards and is more particularly designed to be placed in front of fire places for preventing the sparks from the fire from lighting upon the floor of the room, and has for one of its objects the provision of a fire screen which may be readily folded together when not in use, thus occupying limited storage space.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a'-fire screen provided with means for conveniently conveying the same from one point to another when in folded position.
A still further object "of this invention 'a 'fire screen which is composed of indestructible material, simple in construction, ornamental in, design, efficient and durable in purposeand which may be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.

Referring to the drawings, the fire screen is composed of several screen new in '8 ina manner so which 1 denotes the end frames and 2 the intermediate frames,there being four frames shown in the drawings, but it is to be understood that a greater or less number of screen frames may be used to meet the needs of the case. The screen frames are hingedly connected together at the bottom and top ends at the adjacent meeting side edges by the links 3, the top portions of the end frames 1 being provided with the handles 4 for conveniently carrying the fire screen from point to point when infolded or collapsed position. Each of the screen frames is formed with the upper and lower horizontal wires or rods 5, and. the vertical rods 6, and at the juncture or meeting points of the rods 5 and 6 is provided the angle sleeve 7, in one of the angular portions of which is seated the horizontal rod 5 and through; the re- 'maining portion of the angle sleeve 7, passes the vertical rod 6, the rods 5 and 6 within the angle sleeve 7 being secured therein to form a'fixed connection by brazing or soldering the respective rods and the angle sleeve together. i i
Itis to be understood that previously to v "the assembling of the rods 5 and 6 of the frames, that the horizontal rods 5 are passed through the meshes of the wire fabric 8 at the top and bottom edges thereof as shown at a in .Figs. 2 and l of the drawings, while the Vertical side rods 6 are passed through the meshes of the fabric 8 in a transverse direction. It is to be noted, however, by referring to Fig. 4, that theright hand rod 6 is passed through the meshes of the fabric 1 that the wrapped portions of the mesh indicated at c, and e are positioned at the right of the rod, the left hand'rod 6 being passed through the mesh in a manner whereby the wrapped portions of the mesh as'indicated at b and 0! will lie at the left of the rod, and in this way it will be observedthat the opposing side rods 6 engage the wrapped portions of 'the fabric 7 8 at alternate points along the transverse direction ofthe fabric, whereby when the rods 6 are forced outwardly from each other with the horizontal rods 5 interposed therebetween, the wire fabric 8 will be drawn under tension, assume approximately a diamond shape.
Surrounding the rods 5 are the tubes or cylinders 9, the cylinders 9 being open seamed or slotted for thus causing the meshes to 6 entire as I shown at 10, the rods 6 beingalso provided r with the cylinders 11 provided, with the open 11 and the rods 5 seam or longitudinal slot 12, the slots -and 12 of the cylinders 9 and 11 respectively being provided for the passage of the wire fabric 8 therethrough. The tubes or cylinders 9 and 11 are ofa greater diameter than the rods 5 and 6, each of the cylinders 9 and 11 having their respective -meeting ends beveled as shown at 14, the space between the inner walls of the cylinders 9 and and 6 bein filled with ceinentior other suitable light ling plastic substance as indicated at 15.-
-For hingedly connecting the respective screen frames together, the rods 6 pro'ect through the upper portions of the cylin ers 9 for a distance above the same as shown at 16', and arranged upon the portion 16 of the rods 6 are the washers 17, resting upon the upper surfaces of the cylinders 9, and
for hingedly connecting the rods 6 of the adjacent screen frames are the links 3 having formed therein adjacent each of the ends the apertures 19 for passing over the portion 16 of the rods 6 and resting upon the washers 17 and also positioned upon the a portion 16 are the'washers 20. and 21, the
washer 20 resting upon the' link 3 and the washer 21' being in spaced relation to the washer 20. The washers 17,20, and21 are fixedly secured to the portion 16 of the rod 6 by clenching'or other suitable means for fixedly securing the washers to the portion 16. The washers 20 and 2l0are of less diameter however than the washer 17, and over the portion 16 of the rod 6 and surrounding a the washers2O and 21 but having its lower edge resting upon the links 3 are the caps 22, these caps being crimped at the. point opposite the space between the washers 20 and 21 and forced inwardlyat this point as a shown at 23. This manner of mounting the 1 ti ons. The lower ends of the rod 6 also pro 7 links 3, the washers 17, 20 and, 21 and the caps 22' form efficient hinge connections between the respective screen frame sections, the links and washers being broad, and fiat prevents wabbling of the screen frame sec ject slightly outwardly of the lower cylinders 9 and are provided with similar hinge connections as at the top portions thereof excepting the washers 21 and the caps 22 are omitted. I'desire to here state that in the construction of the fire screen or guard constituting this invention, I have provided a light, ornamental, indestructible and cheap device. Among other features of this invention reside the link connections and the rigidity of a screen frame sections at the top and bottom of the adjacent meeting side ed es, for by the use of the broad washers, an the broad link connections are efficiently retained between the said washers which are fixedly secured to the'projecting ends of the rods 6,
thus forming a'hinge connection for and preventing the wabbling of the screen frame sections of ,the fire screen structure.
While I have here shown and described the preferred form of my invention I hereby reserve the right to make such alterations and variations therein from time to time as I may deem expedient and which will not depart from the spirit of this invention nor conflict with the scope of the claim. .7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:- A fire screen or guard, comprising a plurality of.screen frames, horizontal top and bottom rods for. said frames, vertical side rods for said frames, a woven wire fabric secured to said rods, the adjacent side rods projecting outwardly of saidframes, links embracing the projecting ends of said adjacent siderods for hingedly connecting said frames together caps for said adjacent side rods, slotted tubessurrounding said rods, said fabricpassing through the slots of said tubes, :said tubes being of a greater diameter than said rods and providing space therebetween, and a plastic filling in said tubes for embedding said rods therein.
