Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
JAMES MACNAUGHTAN, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIG-'NOR T0 PACKAGE CONFECTIONERY COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CORPORATION 0F MASSACHUSETTS.
DISPLAY AND DISPENSING RECEPTACLE.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Application filed April 1, 1914. Serial No. 828,761.
-To all whom z't may concern Be 1t known that I, JAMES MACNAUGHTAN,
` a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display and Dispensing Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to shipping and storing receptacles or packages, but more especially to such as provide means for displaying their` contents Without unsealing or opening the package, and means for conveniently dispensing or serving such contents directly from the package itself without the necessity of actually handling the goods.
It'has for an ob]- ect, among others, that of economically producing receptacles or packages for the purposes indicated, which are at once lighty in weight, quickly formed eitherby hand or machinery and therefore inexpensiveto produce, of' ample strength and durability for the uses to which they are 4ordinarily subjected, and adapted by reason of shape to pack advantageously in shipping boxes, crates or cartons.
More particularly stated the invention is designed, arranged and adapted for packaging confectionery in practically air-tight' moistureproof sealed receptacles, and at the .il same time ydisplaying it to view in a manner which thoroughly protects it from dust, dirt, or atmospheric changes, and provides not only novel, but convenient and sanitary means for serving it to the consumer.
The inventionv will be hereinafter described and pointedout in the claim following. p
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters Patent, and whereon corresponding numerals refer to like parts in the several views: Figure 1, is a perspective view of the invention, containing sugar wafers to be seen on edge through the transparent top closure or wrapper; Fig. 2, is. a transverse section -taken at any point through Fig. 1 between wafers one of the latter appearing in elevation, andFig.l 3, is also a perspective View which illustrating the manner of conveniently dispensing wafers from the receptacle.
Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates a coverless box, or container having one side removed, preferably formed of cardboard or ordinary paste-board shown in the present illustrations as of rectangular form having a closed bottom and integral sides of suitable strength and rigidity. Starting at the line 2, or from any other point upon the sides or bottom of container 1 an outer transparent moisture-proof Wrapper 3 smoothly infolds and completely envelops the entire box-like or trough shaped container, overlaps itself as at 4, and is finally folded'upon itselfat both ends as indicated at 5q in any manner insures comparative smoothness. This envelop or wrapper 3 is glued or otherwise secured in place and is formed of vany relatively tough transparent moisture-proof material such for example as paraiiined paper, which, when applied as aforesaid, smoothly bridges the open top of container 1, and constitutes a transparent rendible cover or closure therefor reaching from side to'side.
The container 1 beneathwrapper 3 may be variously configured or lettered by way of ornamentation or for advertising purposes, or such matter may preferably be printed upon the wrapper itself before it is 'applied to the container, and in either event will be plainly visible at all times.
In dispensing goods from receptacles constructed substantially as hereinabove set forth, the cover layer of transparent wrapper 3 may be torn bodily from the wide open top of container 1, but inI order to avoid the danger or possibility of handling the goods while still in the receptacle, it is by preference, merely started at one extreme of container 1, may bereadily and con-` veniently delivered through the end openv ing 6, as required.
Obviously this or substantially thisv arl rangement and combination of elements for packing articles of merchandise; such as the candy wafers shown, thoroughly protects such goods from deterioration by granulation or for other causes, facilitates dis lay of the goods upon shelves or in cases'o the retailer, enables them to be handled in a thoroughly sanitary manner by dealers, purchasers and consumers alike, protects them from breakage whilein storage or transportation, and provides for packing the individual rectangular receptacles in larger boxes, crates'or cartons' to the best possible advantage for purposes of shipment. y
When disk-like solid articles, suchas candy wafers are stacked in the receptacle 1, it will be particularly noted that they arev attractively displayed, and are, by the sides of t-hel receptacle, retained in alinement as shown by ythe drawings. `Moreover, it will be seen that the transparent rendible closure B, bridging the vopen side of container 1, is in turn supported intermediate of its sides by the articles 7 within said container. This relatively thin transparent closure 3 is thereore protected against puncture or accidental breakage throughout its area of contact with the contents of the receptacle', but is unprotected at its eXtreme sides, where, as
. a consequence, it may be conveniently and quickly severed by application of a thumb nail for the purpose of rendering the contents of the package accessible.
Having thus described my invention in the best form of construction at present known to me from both a mechanical and commercial point of view., what now claim andA desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A multiple article package len'abodying a plurality of disk-like solid-articles stacked in contact and alinement, a trough shaped container for said articles open on one side and of such cross sectional area and form as to laterally support said articles, and a transparent rendible closure bridging 'the open side of said. container and supported throughout its entire length on a restricted area intermediateV of its sides by the articles themselves.
In testimonyl whereof l aix my signature, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
y JAMES MACNAUGHTAN.
